Bringing the advances of theoretical linguistics to the study of language change in a systematic way, this innovative textbook demonstrates the mutual relevance of historical linguistics and contemporary linguistics. Numerous case studies throughout the book show both that theoretical linguistics can be used to solve problems where traditional approaches to historical linguistics have failed to produce satisfying results, and that the results of historical research can have an impact on theory. The book first explains the nature of human language and the sources of language change in broad terms. It then focuses on different types of language change from contemporary viewpoints, before exploring comparative reconstruction - the most spectacular success of traditional historical linguistics -and the problems inherent in trying to devise new methods for linguistic comparison. Positioned at the cutting edge of the field, the book argues that this approach can and should lead to the re-integration of historical linguistics as one of the core areas in the study of language.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...The authors present the successes of traditional historical linguistics together with the developments brought about by general linguistics.... The book is clearly written and well organized, and there is a wealth of data-not all of it well known to linguists-that should excite the curiosity of even a casual academic reader.... Recommended..."

As someone with fourteen different certified languages, I can surely say this is one of the best updated textbooks on diachronic lingustics. As some who has been teaching at three different universities with over 90% positive students' evaluations, I can tell anybody this can be the university manual for ant graduate student of historical linguistics.

5.0 out of 5 stars thought provoking en höchstmodern

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST HISTORICAL LINGUISTICS BOOK EVER
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 8, 2013
I consider the book to be the best ever written on historical linguistics for four reasons. To begin with, the explanations are followed by examples and these are numerous. Second, the bibliography is updated. Next, it follows a eclectic approach to by taking the best from each school of linguistics. And last, but not least, it uses the 'Leipzig Glossing Rules', which are the standard way, if not the best, to gloss examples today.

As a holder of a PhD in Sociolexitraductology, I have been living in eleven places from three different countries and I also have been teaching in four different universities anything from Phonetics to Pragmatics. I admire the book authors as I am myself the holder of certificates in thirteen different languages. Understanding the past of a language can make us predict its future.
