A Piaget Primer: How a Child Thinks; Revised Edition Paperback – July 1, 1996
Purchase options and add-ons
Jean Piaget is arguably the most important figure of the twentieth century in the field of child psychology. Over more than six decades of studying and working with children, he brilliantly and insightfully charted the stages of a child's intellectual maturation from the first years to adulthood, and in doing so pioneered a new mode of understanding the changing ways in which a child comes to grasp the world.
The purpose of A Piaget Primer is to make Piaget's vital work readily accessible to teachers, therapists, students, and of course, parents. Two noted American psychologists distill Piaget's complex findings into wonderfully clear formulations without sacrificing either subtlety or significance. To accomplish this, they employ not only lucid language but such fascinating illuminations of a child's world and vision as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Winnie-the-Pooh, as well as media manifestations like Barney and Sesame Street. This completely revised edition of this classic work is as enjoyable as it is invaluable—an essential guide to comprehending and communicating with children better than we ever have before.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2018As someone studying to get my teaching license, I didn't want to spend too much time sifting through a complicated text. I'm very glad I went with this primer instead of starting with one of Piaget's texts. The concepts were laid out in a very understandable, logical way, and each one had relevant examples to go along with it. The revised edition was published in 1996, so the book only just starts to cover television and computer games, but I find that the developmental concepts still hold up despite the changes in media we've experienced since the 90's. I'd definitely recommend using the children in your life or at your job as helpful references when covering these concepts, as more often than not you'll find plenty of parallels between the content and the child's development if you're looking for them. The book also has a helpful glossary in the back of key terms, which makes for very efficient studying.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2018Hear Jordan Peterson praise Piaget and now I know why. This books gives some basics of what he discovered and should be followed up by further readings and understandings. Any parent or adult who's around children should read this and become familiar to Piaget's work. How a child thinks and see's the world, is not like how we adults see it and this books lays some basic foundation to coming to this understandings. One of the things I enjoyed in this book is the level of perception a child has when it comes to level of depth and putting things together as a whole. The age of understanding that a child starts to develop these fundamental skills and development. Don't wanna spill all the beans now, can just read the book. It's very short and sweet and should be followed up with other works.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2005This is a very nice book that uses children's literature, popular comics, and very good writing to demystify Piaget for beginners. I tried to read parts of Piaget's How a Child Thinks and had to put it down. The authors recognize the difficulty in reading Piaget's original works and have written this book for non psychology students. This was a very useful book for a research paper on Piaget for a special education graduate course.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2010Piaget's theories are complex and hard to understand without interpretation. This is exactly the book I needed as it was advertised. Often Piaget's words were of his own coining...since he was a pioneer in child development....or he uses different
definitions not available in a dictionary. Also, this book uses examples from children's literature to illustrate points. Excellent resource.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2013Helps you understand the cognitive mechanisms and the building of logic and knowledge in small children. The book is full of explanatory examples that can be easily reproduced with your own child.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2021I have no idea what people get out of Piaget's research. This book will add nothing to your understanding of how a child thinks beyond what you can observe plainly with your own two eyes. Piaget's trick seems to work like this: watch a baby do something (e.g. reach for a toy), then you classify that action as a part of a "stage" and finally, give that stage a high falutin' name like "pre-operational sensory-motor stage". That's it. That's the trick. Anyone with an infant can see with their own two eyes that a child learns by imitation. I fail to see what knowledge is gained by classifying the act of' learning by imitation' under a fancy sounding term. The book adds no new insight into a child's development that isn't already readily observable. It just catalogs these observations under various technical terms that can be rattled off by people who desire to make a living as professionals in the field of child psychology.
Many of the observations are just flat out incorrect to begin with. The author says a child under age two can't imitate an adult's facial expressions because the child can't see his own face. Wrong. My 9 month old has no problem opening their eyes or mouth wide in order to imitate a surprised facial expression I am making. Many examples like this. It claims a two year old will imitate sounds the parent makes. Really? More like a 6 month old. It seems like this book was written by aliens who never saw human babies who are trying to explain infant behavior to other aliens who never saw human babies.
Perhaps I could come to understand the lauded genius of Piaget by reading his own work instead of this summary but after this 'primer' I really have no interest in pursuing him further. If you want to buy this as a guidebook to make sure your child is reaching age appropriate milestones, don't. It doesn't do that. Just look up milestones online or ask your pediatrician. Just pay attention to your kid and you will see for yourself how a child learns. You won't have the jargon to impress other 'very smart people', but besides knowing the jargon, your observations will give you WAY more insight into a child's development than whoever writes this academic stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book for those interested in a child's mind and its working
Wonderful book to understand the mind of a baby as it grows, with ample illustrations from common children's books to make the psychological principles simpler to a lay man.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Piaget
This is a fairly slim primer for anyone needing an overview of Piaget's theories. It both gives a comprehensive insight and points you in the right direction for digging deeper. It has been useful so far for my linguistics PhD literature review but I imagine it will also be useful for child development students starting out.
