Purchase options and add-ons
Nathan Stone, the man they called The Gunfighter, lay dead in the dust of an El Paso street. The Sandlin gang kicked up that dust as they rode back laughing into Mexico, where the U.S. law couldn't touch them and local law didn't want to.
Behind him Nathan Stone left his horse, his Winchester, his custom-made Colts, and his name. The son who had grown up without him took them all. His name is Wes Stone. He used to be a lawman, but when he picks up his father's guns, he takes down the star from his chest.
Wes knows the impossible odds of going against the outlaw army and its empire of evil. But he knows something else too. He's his father's son, and he's going to teach his father's killers exactly what that means...

- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2017This was the first book by Ralph Compton that I read and have read the other two in the sreies; I am now finishing up the Nathan Stone series. What liked about this book ( and also the other two in this series) is the friendship that grows between Wes Stone and El Lobo, particulalrly since El Lobo was out to kill Wes but instead gets shot by some of the other outlaws and Wes.saves him. I would have liked some more dialogue between the two to develop the friendship but other than that I enjoyed the 3 books very much. One criticism, and I write this as both a native Spanish speaker and teacher, is that the Spanish dialogue in the books is not very proper Spanish.A Spansih speaking editor would have helped. Other than that, the books in thie series are great reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2024I read it along time ago, bought the 3 books series for a friend to read. Thinking about reading it again. It was one of the best western series I've come across in a long time. Ralph Compton was one of the best writers of western fiction i have ever found. It will keep you turning pages untill the wee hours of the morning just to find out what happens next. I suggest to anyone that likes westerns to get a copy and start reading it today.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2015Bought as a gift for a Ralph Compton fan. He had not heard of this series and liked it very well.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2000After "Autumn of The Gun", "Border Empire" was a welcome return to the style of writing that makes Ralph Compton a good western writer.
Actually, this book is equal to the first two Nathan Stone novels. The only drawback of the book is the small part of Wes Stone's dog; a storyline that I enjoyed in the Nathan Stone books, which showcased a larger part for the two dogs.
I also recognized James Drury's review of the book though he chose not to identify himself. His stamp of approval is always good enough for me. For the one or two people who might not recognize his name, he played "The Virginian" on Television from 1962 to 1971 and made it impossible for me to watch anyone else play that part, including Gary Cooper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Series
This is the 2nd last book in this series, I am not a Western fan per se but this series fell into my lap and I was impressed at the good read it turned out to be. Looking forward to the last book in the series.
