- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2009This is a very nice, simple identification book. I very much appreciate the drawings, every grass has at least one page with drawings sometimes of different stages of the life cycle, there is an identification guide in the beginning of the book, and a glossery of terms in the back. I am a beginning grass identifier; this is my first grass identification book and I think it is a terrific choice.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2012I got this book when I got sent out to OK to do a large delineation. I am not great with grasses so I decided to try out this book. It has good descriptions, but the images aren't too great.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2024I expected more of an illustrated guide, but this is actually a dichotomous key. Well done, but a lot more work than thumbing through pictures. So I'm disappointed, but I have to respect that it's a really good key.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2012This book is just what I was looking for, excellent "instructions" for use by the author, set up so that the confusing issues are recognized and addressed - and a very convenient size for carrying out to the field for work. I'm so happy to have found it!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2024This book pertains to northeastern species only. It is hard to tell in the listing. You need to read the back cover or find the map inside the book. Otherwise the cover and the listing states it is a guide to North American grasses, msedges and rushes. Not so. It is hard for me to rate this book since I neither live or work in the northeastern US,but it is well rated by most reviewers.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2015I am increasingly fascinated by grasses especially when allowed to grow to maturity. Beautiful. Who sees these wonderful plants as remarkable as they are. Grateful for Lauren Brown for spending her time on earth developing this handy ID book. Love it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2009This book has a very brief identification section that will not be complete for the amature. Grasses covered exist in the northeastern U.S. but not in alpine habitats. It does have a large "Species Descriptions and Illustrations" section where some of the descriptions can be too brief and most of the illustrations are lacking. Each species account has a common name, scientific name (may only be to genus), family, brief defining characteristics, flowering period, habitat, and may contain some general notes, which may include information about some species that it could be confused with. Has a very short glossary (next to useless) but has a nice "Habitat Key" that contains lists of common grasses found in certain habitats. A short list of species found during certain flowering times. The chapter entitled "If you do not find something in this book" has some recommended books and also has more glossary terms for the flowers, fruits, leaves and stems, which includes some general labeled diagrams for the grasses, rushes and sedges.
