Featured on the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ Reading List and the Chief of Naval Operation’s “Naval Power” Reading List

The Marine Corps is known for its heroes, and Lieutenant General Lewis B. Puller has long been considered the greatest of them all. His assignments and activities covered an extraordinary spectrum of warfare. Puller mastered small unit guerrilla warfare as a lieutenant in Haiti in the 1920s, and at the end of his career commanded a division in Korea. In between, he chased Sandino in Nicaragua and fought at Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Peleliu.

With his bulldog face, barrel chest (which earned him the nickname Chesty), gruff voice, and common touch, Puller became—and has remained—the epitome of the Marine combat officer. At times Puller's actions have been called into question—at Peleliu, for instance, where, against a heavily fortified position, he lost more than half of his regiment. And then there is the saga of his son, who followed in Chesty's footsteps as a Marine officer only to suffer horrible wounds in Vietnam (his book,
Fortunate Son, won the Pulitzer Prize).

Jon Hoffman has been given special access to Puller's personal papers as well as his personnel record. The result will unquestionably stand as the last word about Chesty Puller.

Praise for Chesty: The Story of Lieutenant General Lewis B. Puller, USMC

“There are as many wild tales about Chesty Puller’s battlefield exploits as there are Marines. Jon Hoffman, like a master prospector, has separated the fool’s gold from the real nuggets in telling this glittering story of an ex- traordinary Leatherneck.”
—Colonel Joseph H. Alexander, USMC (Ret.), author of A Fellowship of Valor: The Battle History of the United States Marines

“Holder of an incredible five Navy Crosses, Marine Corps hero Lewis B. Puller deserves this definitive biography. Jon Hoffman, in his meticulously researched and written Chesty, gets past the legends and reveals the man.”
—Brigadier General Edwin Howard Simmons, USMC (Ret.), director emeritus, Marine Corps History

Praise for Jon T. Hoffman’s Once a Legend: “Red Mike” Edson of the Marine Raiders

“Jon Hoffman’s biography catches the dark, driven nature of Edson’s brilliant career. It is faithful to the man and his Marine Corps and will rank with the best books about American combat leaders. An outstanding achievement.”—
Colonel Allan Millett, USMCR (Ret.), author of Semper Fidelis: The History of the United States Marine Corps

“‘Red Mike’ Edson, as brilliantly chronicled in this book, was . . . courageous and fearless–truly a legend.”
—Lieutenant General Victor H. Krulak, USMC (Ret.)

“Jon Hoffman has captured the qualities and contributions of this exceptional thinker, fighter, and patriot.
Once a Legend strips the veil from a remarkable career and gives us the man in true perspective.”—Colonel J. E. Greenwood, USMC (Ret.), former editor of the Marine Corps Gazette

I love to read and was very excited to receive my new book. However when I took it out of the bag the front cover was ripped almost completely off. I used packing tape too repair it. I was very disappointed. You would have thought the person packing it for shipment would've noticed that.

Great historical novel about a Marine Corps hero. This iteration of Chester Puller’s life gives the good and the not so good about a true American hero. Sadly it is also a tale told over and over about the two sided Janus of all American Officer Corps. Politically oriented officers with awesome schmoozing skills but not so good operational skills go to the forefront during periods of peacetime, while the warrior trained officers are held back. Then, when major conflicts occur, we end up firing the schmoozers at the beginning of hostilities (who unfortunately end up killing a lot of soldiers and sailorsalong the way) and dusting off the operational experts. Chesty was authentic if anything, focused on his objectives and expert in his tactics. Sadly he had flaws, like all leaders. In his case a focus on body count (our own) as a measure of effectiveness and also a Corps ingrained (at that time) focus on keeping to a timeline, took some luster off his shining stars. That said, he is an American legend that I was glad to revisit after many years.

this is one book that anyone who has served in the Corps should read - or if one has "lost" a loved one in action they should certainly read. it. It will explain a lot of actions taken by the top brass and make you think about how fantastic Chesty really was. (read it like studying history - not as a novel) (I served over 5 years on active duty at HQ and have gone over some parts of this book a second time) Chesty was a fantastic person and there will never be another like him. I think the book was beautifully written..

Chesty Puller is a giant in Marine Corps history, so any book dedicated to passing down his legend is going to be a giant also. Its author is also going to have to sift through a lot of myth to get at the real Puller. Chesty is just such a book, and Col. Jon T. Hoffman has done an outstanding job representing Puller's true story.

To summarize the book briefly, Hoffman begins with Puller's family in Virginia, a good idea since he was born into a family and society that prided itself on a tradition of military service and skill. Hoffman briefly touches on Puller's childhood and early life. As World War I neared its end, Puller dropped out of VMI to join the Marine Corps, but the war ended before he could be deployed to France. Puller spent much of the 1920s and 30s in Latin America, fighting in the small wars of Haiti and Nicaragua and establishing a reputation for toughness and bravery there. The locals whom he trained and led loved him. In the 1930s he served in China and, with the outbreak of World War II, had advanced to command a battalion, which deployed to the Pacific.

That covers about 150 pages of his 530+ page book. From there, Hoffman recounts Puller's experiences leading Marines on Guadalcanal, New Britain, and Peleliu. He briefly covers the years leading up the Korean War, and then describes Puller's leadership--now at the head of a regiment--at Inchon and the Chosin Reservoir. The final chapters deal with Puller's final years in the Corps, his failing health, attempts to remain in the Corp, forced retirement, time in the media limelight, and his last years at home with his family.

Puller exemplifies the cliche "larger than life," and this perhaps dauntingly large book moves at a fast past. Hoffman deftly handles all aspects of Puller's life, from his activities in combat and relations to his superiors to his family life and love of his men. This book is a feat of research, cutting through a lot of myth that has built up around Puller--the kind of man to whom people love to attribute stirring quotations--to the real Puller underneath, and charting the growth of that myth through the course of Puller's life.

Chesty is a great book, and any criticisms I have are minor. There are plenty of maps, but there could have been more--or perhaps more detail--especially in some of the chapters on Guadalcanal and Korea. I'm not easily confused by long lists of unit dispositions and descriptions of battlefield terrain, but there were two or three cases in which I had to read and reread paragraphs, meanwhile checking the maps, to understand what was going on. And, my final little quibble, Hoffman's style is sometimes a little dry.

Those minor points aside, Chesty is a fantastic biography and well worth the time invested to read it. Chesty Puller was an inspiring figure whose experiences and ideas are still relevant, and this biography does justice to both.

    Highly recommended.

Chesty Puller was one of our nations best Marines and combat veterans. We were extremely fortunate to have him, his bravery and his skills in WWII and Korea. The book is well-written and provides an accurate view of the man, his legacy as well as his imperfections. The fact that the men under his command generally worshiped him and would follow him into the worst combat situations in WWII and Korea is a testament of his leadership and combat skills. He was generally found near the point of contact with the enemy. Virtually all Marines knows about Chesty Puller, but if you are from a generation that does not know about this man, this book is highly recommended. We are living in a time where his integrity, leadership skills, his forthright nature and his bravery are sorrily needed. This book is hard to put down once you venture into its pages.
