About the Author

L. M. Montgomery was born in 1874 on Prince Edward Island, Canada, where she spent her childhood living with her grandparents in an old farmhouse. A prolific writer, she published many short stories, poems and novels, many of which were inspired by the years she spent on the beautiful Prince Edward Island. Anne of Green Gables and its sequels have always been amongst the most popular of children's classics. Montgomery died in Toronto in 1942 and was buried on her beloved island.

I loved the second book in the Anne of Green Gables series, Anne of Avonlea. I really liked the ending. I love how she ends both of the first 2 books with a big leap in the relationship between Anne and Gilbert. In the first on they become friends, and in the second one Anne starts to see Gilbert as maybe more than a friend. I would recommend this series to all girls above 8. Every girl should read these books at least once.

Lucy Maud Montgomery's excellent "Anne of Avonlea" picks up the story of the orphan Anne Shirley at the end of "Anne of Green Gables." Anne passes up college to stay with Marilla Cuthburt, the now ailing woman who raised her. At just sixteen, Anne is also the new village schoolmarm, full of good intentions for molding young minds. Many of her school mates are still in Avonlea; her beautiful Prince Edward Island home is hers to conquer.

Anne will face many challenges in the next two years. She discovers the theory and practice of teaching can be quite different. Marilla's decision to adopt the orphaned young twins Dora and Davy will thrust parenting responsibilities on the willing Anne. Anne and her friends form the Avonlea Village Improvement Society, and find that the best of intentions can lead to the strangest of results. Anne's sympathy for her eccentric neighbors will lead to some interesting adventures. Her rich imagination will get her into more than one delightful fiasco.

If "Anne of Green Gables" was a rounded story, complete of itself, "Anne of Avonlea" is a bridge across the last of Anne's girlhood to the woman of her future. Montgomery has the delicate touch to linger over Anne's enthusiasm for natural beauty and her delight in many deep friendships, from the lonely little schoolboy Paul Irving, to her best friend Diana, to the reclusive spinster Miss Lavender. There are already reviews of the actual story from another edition, this is a review on this current edition. I read Anne of Green Gables when I was very young but barely remembered any details from the book. A couple of years ago, I decided to reintroduce myself to the story and came across Sterling's published hardcover edition of that book. It was nicely bound with unique sketching of Anne for each phases of her life. In the tradition of the classic bound books, it also included a ribbon marker attached to the binding. I've always appreciated this in classically bound because I tend to lose my book markers and these save me the trouble of using a separate one. This next story, Anne of Avonlea, recently released from Sterling, is also bound to match the original Anne book. Since I would love to collect the rest of the Anne books, I am hoping that Sterling will continue to release the continuing titles in their beautiful packaging so that the book collector in us can complete our shelves.

Edit to add 11/13/2015: It seems Amazon is displaying misleading images of specific editions so I don't believe my review any longer applies to the one that's pictured. Please order your copies with caution.
