Chemistry: A Molecular Approach, Third Edition is an innovative, pedagogically driven text that explains challenging concepts in a student-oriented manner. Nivaldo Tro creates a rigorous and accessible treatment of general chemistry in the context of relevance and the big picture. Chemistry is presented visually through multi-level images–macroscopic, molecular, and symbolic representations–helping students see the connections between the world they see around them (macroscopic), the atoms and molecules that compose the world (molecular), and the formulas they write down on paper (symbolic). The hallmarks of Dr. Tro’s problem-solving approach are reinforced through interactive media that provide students with an office-hour type of environment built around worked examples and expanded coverage on the latest developments in chemistry. Pioneering features allow students to sketch their ideas through new problems, and much more.

About the Author
Nivaldo Tro is Professor of Chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum. He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution. Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin layer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces. He has been honored as Westmont's outstanding teacher of the year three times and has also received the college's outstanding researcher of the year award. Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Ali, Kyle, and Kaden. In his leisure time, Professor Tro enjoys mountain biking, surfing, reading to his children, and being outdoors with his family.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2025This is an extremely bully and heavy book of modern chemistry. It is fully illustrated in color and it contains material for a first year chemistry course in college or university, it is not calculus based so it is too 'wordy' is its arguments with heavy use of ilustrations.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2017Been using this book for several terms now for my general chemistry sequence and it was a little cheaper than buying it at the campus bookstore. Very satisfied with the purchase. Tro does a great job walking through the problem solving and using real world examples, but I've found that problems can ask you to find a given variable in an equation and the book may never give an example like that. So the book is good but you won't see every kind of problem i.e. it might be up to you to rearrange the equation. This is not a fault of the book just expect to have to do some critical thinking as they don't spoon feed you everything.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2020I was using the openstax FREE textbook for my college chemistry course. Until we arrived at the equilibrium chapter, I was happy with OpenStax. The students did, however, appreciate the PDF printed out. I have since switched to Tro and everyone is happier. It is written in a more understandable language and the text is much more clear.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2014I am renting this book out for the summer, and would highly recommend renting it to anyone who is taking general chemistry. I review each chapter after we covert it in class, and it has really helped me the material concrete in and stick in my brain. Also, renting is a great option.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2023Enjoyed this book back when I took chemistry.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2016Pay no attention to the one star reviews. I'm not denying that the 1st edition is probably equivalent to this 3rd edition (I'm just getting what my professor asks for) and even if it is, there's no reason to give this book 1 star. Give it one star on the author's page, not on an amazon rental review! You should only be reviewing the quality the book came to you in, and for me it's great! no watermarks, no ripped out pages, spine is sturdy,no writing. Just what I was looking for!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2013Got this as a rental for college kid. When I checked back about a month after renting it, I found that I could have purchased it for almost the same price. I called and was able to speak with a real person who wasn't in India. They were very helpful, very nice, and immediately lowered my rental price and sent a refund to satisfy me. The book was in delivered on time and in good condition. After you figure out where the rental section of books is on the Amazon website, it's easy to get the return label printed off. The whole rental system seems new and a little harder to navigate compared to other websites, but will do when you're looking for to save money. Amazon needs to make it easier to navigate the rental process before I try it again.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2016Chemistry is my least favorite subject and the one I struggle with the most but this textbook provides lots of helpful examples that have step by step explanations. This is one of the few textbooks I've actually read and worked through completely and it doesn't disappoint. I went from getting solid C's in chemistry to an A-/B+ level, which I think is pretty good. I do wish the chapters were a bit shorter though but I guess it would be hard to condense all the material.
