Product Description
In this six-session video-based small group bible study (guide sold separately), Gary Thomas uses a unique lens to look at parenting, moving beyond raising great children to becoming more holy as a person.
What if one of God’s primary intentions for you as a parent isn’t about successfully raising perfect children, but about you becoming more holy? In Sacred Parenting Gary Thomas illustrates how God can transform lessons in raising children into opportunities to grow in the image of Christ.
It will help you and your group, rediscover parenting from a different perspective: as a method of spiritual formation expressly designed by God to shape your soul in ways you could not imagine! This study will help you dig deeper into learning how God can transform dirty diapers, toddler tantrums, and a teenager’s silence into occasions for becoming more like Christ.
Sessions include:
- The Soul-Transforming Journey of Parenting
- God-Centered Parenting
- The Hardest Hurt of All
- Embracing Our Insignificance
- Walking on the Wild Side of Parenting
- The Gold Behind the Guilt
Designed for use with the Sacred Parenting Participant's Guide (sold separately).

- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2012We are doing this six-week series with our Sunday school class, and find it to be among the best parenting courses we've ever participated in. Rather than being a guide on how to get your kids to do what you want, it helps parents become better disciples and, in the process, better parents. Thomas is persuasive, non-judgmental, and humble, and participants in the class are being moved and touched each week to grow deeper in their love for Christ and for their families. This course is relatively inexpensive, and we are thinking of buying several for baby gifts, since so many people in our class have said, "We wish we'd had this from the beginning." One more plus - the six sessions are only about 20 minutes long, which is great in our over-busy society.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2010This book is a nice change of pace from most "how to" guides on parenting. This doesn't give you instructions or tips or tricks. Instead, it gives you a fresh perspective on how God intended parenting as part of his plan to shape Christians. If you have the right perspective on life, that can help more than trying to force a few tricks into your daily routine.
Sacred Marriage is an excellent book that any married Christian couple (or about to get married) should read. Sacred Parenting isn't as good. The points are somehow more vague and less impactful. The stories and anecdotes drag a little, rather than really breathing life into the lesson. Sacred Parenting is still a good book, but not as good as I hoped after reading Sacred Marriage.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2014This book is good news for parents! Instead of focusing on changing their behavior (wondering how a child of mine could do that) the author Gary Thomas directs our attention to modeling our love for Jesus, and acting like him as a parent. This is only possible when he resides within you - empowering you to take the high road as a parent. He is faithful to show you what that road looks like every time! I had the privilege of facilitating this as a Morning Grace class which is a women's Bible study group in Cornelius, NC. The fifty plus participants enjoyed this fresh approach to parenting - and gave huge sighs of relief to know that God can work through our past, present and future failures as a parent!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2016Read this book. You will get so much more out of it than what you expect. It will enrich your life. And it is worth your time. Read it straight through, by itself (instead of in addition to other books). Estimate how long it will take to complete, based on how much time you can devote. For example if you figured it will take four days, eight days, whatever, commit to reading it in that amount of time to get the most out of this book. And may God richly bless you & your spouse & kids.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2013I was on the lookout for a parenting book that interwove several important Christian values I look to help raise my children with. And Thomas' book fits the bill perfectly. His personal family anecdotes were not only humorous but very relevant to what virtually all parents go through when raising children. His chapters were easy to digest and put into practice as they truly were backed with Biblical principles. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am trying my best to raise my children as best I could. This book is definitely a great tool to help any parents out there who may need some extra help. I highly recommend it.

It not a how-to book, which is great since there are thousands 'manuals' on raising children in the market. Rather, it encourages parents to consider the purpose of raising children for the Glory of God; but it is still very practical.

5.0 out of 5 stars View my role as parent in a different perspective
The book opened my eyes with divine understanding of why God gave us children and humble myself that nobody is perfect but God still want to use us.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
The book starts strong with some good insight and advice, but it really loses steam around the middle. It feels like the last half of the book or more reads like an early draft, with lots of incomplete and superficial ideas, and a lot of padding from personal and researched anecdotes. Not worth finishing
