This is the story of Condoleezza Rice that has never been told, not that of an ultra-accomplished world leader, but of a little girl--and a young woman--trying to find her place in a sometimes hostile world, of two exceptional parents, and an extended family and community that made all the difference.

Condoleezza Rice has excelled as a diplomat, political scientist, and concert pianist. Her achievements run the gamut from helping to oversee the collapse of communism in Europe and the decline of the Soviet Union, to working to protect the country in the aftermath of 9-11, to becoming only the second woman--and the first black woman ever--to serve as Secretary of State.

But until she was 25 she never learned to swim, because when she was a little girl in Birmingham, Alabama, Commissioner of Public Safety Bull Connor decided he'd rather shut down the city's pools than give black citizens access.

Throughout the 1950's, Birmingham's black middle class largely succeeded in insulating their children from the most corrosive effects of racism, providing multiple support systems to ensure the next generation would live better than the last. But by 1963, Birmingham had become an environment where blacks were expected to keep their head down and do what they were told--or face violent consequences. That spring two bombs exploded in Rice’s neighborhood amid a series of chilling Klu Klux Klan attacks.  Months later, four young girls lost their lives in a particularly vicious bombing.

So how was Rice able to achieve what she ultimately did?

Her father, John, a minister and educator, instilled a love of sports and politics. Her mother, a teacher, developed Condoleezza’s passion for piano and exposed her to the fine arts. From both, Rice learned the value of faith in the face of hardship and the importance of giving back to the community. Her parents’ fierce unwillingness to set limits propelled her to the venerable halls of Stanford University, where she quickly rose through the ranks to become the university’s second-in-command. An expert in Soviet and Eastern European Affairs, she played a leading role in U.S. policy as the Iron Curtain fell and the Soviet Union disintegrated. Less than a decade later, at the apex of the hotly contested 2000 presidential election, she received the exciting news--just shortly before her father’s death--that she would go on to the White House as the first female National Security Advisor.

As comfortable describing lighthearted family moments as she is recalling the poignancy of her mother’s cancer battle and the heady challenge of going toe-to-toe with Soviet leaders, Rice holds nothing back in this remarkably candid telling.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"[Features] prose so spare it lays bare a child’s pain…full of raw vignettes, episodes that should jolt our post-racial sensibilities…[The book shows that] the key to Rice’s composure in office – which was a mix of womanly grace and analytical rigor – lies in the manner in which she was raised. In this, America owes a debt to John and Angelena Rice, parents extraordinarily pushy, parents extraordinarily brave."
Wall Street Journal

Surprisingly engrossing…One senses a romantic softness at the core of the steely woman Americans met during her years of public service.  Rice’s reverence of her parents is touching, as is her abiding love for the Titusville of her youth.”
Daily Beast

“Pays tribute to the people who truly shaped her [and] sets the record straight on aspects of her life that often flirt with myth.”
USA Today

“An origins story…teeming with fascinating detail.”
New York Times

“A thrilling, inspiring life of achievement.”
—Publishers Weekly

“A frank, poignant and loving portrait of a family that maintained its closeness through cancer, death, career ups and downs, and turbulent change in American society.”
—Booklist

“Vivid and heartfelt writing…Rice’s graceful memoir is a personal, multigenerational look into her own, and our country’s, past…Highly recommended.”
—Library Journal

"In this
remarkably clear-eyed and candid autobiography, Rice focuses instead on her fascinating coming-of-age during the stormy civil rights years in Birmingham, Alabama."

Condoleezza Rice has penned a superb autobiography in which she pays loving tribute to her parents for their love, wisdom, advice, and courage. I thoroughly enjoyed every page. The book is nicely bound with excellent readable print, and covers her life up to the beginning of the George W. Bush administration. The journey is full of surprises! Her parents, both educators, were remarkable people.

From Birmingham, Alabama, to Palo Alto, Ca. where she attended Stanford, to a stint in the White House advising President George H.W. Bush, to Provost of Stanford Univ. and to the appointment of National Security Advisor for President George W. Bush; Dr. Condoleezza Rice developed into a classy and brilliant young lady who stayed close to her parents and respected their sacrifices for her development.

Dr. Rice writes with refreshing candor about every aspect of her life up to the Bush election. Hopefully, another book will be in the works about her position of National Security Advisor (the first woman to serve) and her years as the sixty-sixth Secretary of State. We remember her as the articulate, attractive, modestly well-dressed representative of our country during those years - now thru this wonderful memoir, you will appreciate this multi-talented lady in a completely new way.

I am a big fan on Ms Rice. I enjoyed her book but was struck by how many references their were to "me, me, me". It was very evident that she was a beloved only child. This surprised me as I view her as someone with great sophistication and almost manic objectivity.

I loved her recollections of living through Segregation and how her Father's need to protect them from the KKK instilled in her a belief in the Constitutional Right "to keep and bear arms". It was her Father with his shotgun and other Fathers in the black neighborhoods of Birningham who protected their families, not the Goverment.

Her story of over achievement was unique in 1950s/60s and it is still unique today. I love to hear a story of someone unaffected by racial stereotypes who overcomes them without ever even taking them into consideration. Everbody belongs to a Race or Culture of some kind. Be extraordinary and forget about the rest. That's Condi Rice in a nutshell.

    Highly recommend this book.

I loved the audio version on CDs, unabridged and read by the author. It was a joy to drive around and listen to her tell about the lives of her and her parents as they lived and made decisions in turbulent times. Her parents made incredible sacrifices for her, an only child. And she lived up to it by growing up to be a great human being and a wonderful daughter.

There are many parallels to the Laura Ingalls stories of growing up on the frontier after the Civil War. Laura's books can be read as the story of her parents trying to make a life outside of civilization, and then surviving the brutal North Dakota winters as civilization creeps toward them and over them. Condoleezza's book can be read on one level as the story of her parents in Birmingham, Denver and Palo Alto after the Civil Rights Act changed their world. In Laura's book it is heartbreaking when Pa gives his "little half pint" in marriage, knowing he will seldom see her again. In Condoleezza's book it is sad when her mother died -- but I blubbered like a baby when "Daddy" died, possibly releasing his then-tenuous grip on life to make it more convenient for her to move to DC to become National Security Advisor.

Her writing is disarmingly conversational. Listening to the book feels like you have the three members of the Rice family as house guests, and you can't wait to get back home after work, to hang out with them some more. Count me charmed.

It's pretty clear that this is intended solely as a book about her early life and her wonderful parents. Just enough details of her political life are included to allow us to see her career through their proud eyes. She talks about being single and her feelings about elective office. But she clearly reserves to another day a book about her professional life as National Security Advisor and Secretary of State.

Condoleezza Rice is a very special person and this is a wonderful book, whatever your race or political persuasion.

great book. Ms. Rice really hits the nail right on the head with some of the number one issues of today. Highlights the importance of the whole family in a child's life.

Condoleezza Rice's memoir is especially valuable for its insights on the black middle class in Birmingham during the 1960s. Her father and mother are the heroes of this book and most admirable people. The privileges they provided their only child and their sacrificed for her set her up to be an achieved who saw no barriers as insurmountable. A book well worth reading with insight into the thinking of black Republicans and the complexity behind their political party identification.

From the very beginning the book catches your attention. Political affiliations aside she answers every question in such an honest manner you will both cringe and admire her.

This is not a self serving piece of writing but a candid appreciation of not just her family but the people who overlooked her race and sex and helped her achieve her goals. Her parents will make you want to become better parents or be grateful for the good ones you had or have.

The words will really make you take a look at your life and pray, meditate or reflect on wanting to be and do more with your life.

Congratulations Ms Rice you have truly honoured your parents!

    A definite re-read.

A boring tell-through about her growing up up to her service to George W. Bush's Administration. She does not go into much details of any aspect of her early life. Maybe it is just as ordinary as any others' life.

There is no anecdotes and similar what one may expect from this kind of personalities.

I did not sense much incentive to finish the reading.

This is an extremely rewarding book to read. Rice gives huge insight into what it was like growing up in segregated Alabama, emphasising the pride and dedication to excellence of the black community. There is no whingeing, no sense of playing the victim - just a determination to succeed and uphold one's ethics. It is also a testament to the importance and power of Christian belief as Rice matures and excels academically before going into service at the White House.

Condoleeza Rice is a sort of remarkable, intellectual person, and the most influential in the world, despite she had grown up in the most segrigative city of Birmingham, Alabama in U.S., she loved a lot of challenges, for instance, skating, piano, and school, I think she's a person of discipline and perseverance, furthermore, I wish she would become the first female president of the United States of America some day. If you have time to read something, you should try it.
