Review
"The Indians of Texas, by W. W. Newcomb, Jr., is an excellent and long-needed survey of the ethnography of the Indian tribes who resided within the present limits of Texas since the beginning of the historic period.... The book is the most comprehensive. scholarly, and authoritative account covering all the Indians of Texas, and is an invaluable and indispensable reference for students of Texas history, for anthropologists, and for lovers of Indian lore." ― Ethnohistory
"Dr. Newcomb writes persuasively and with economy, and he has used his material very well indeed.... his presentation makes good reading of what might have been a book only for the specialists." ― Saturday Review

- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2022I am not a native Texan, so I need to learn about the original people. I, firmly believe, that a person never stops learning.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2021Newcomb's book is a classic beginning with prehistoric Native Americans living in Texas and including later arriving tribes like the Comanche, Kiowa, and Southern Cheyenne. Its in depth, well researched, and comprehensive. A must for any student of Texas history.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2015This is the 4th copy of this book that I've bought. I tend to give books away to my friends. Mr. Newcomb walks you through the daily lives of each tribe telling you how they lived, interacted, believed and what happened to them. Very easy read!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2014The chapters are a bit condensed in facts but over all a very good book for beginners and those who want a good general over-view of the tribes in Texas. Would like to see a bit more artwork. More details would naturally require a much longer book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2017A very useful reference. Gave this copy to a prison mission for Native Americans incarcerated in Texas prisons.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2012I bought this book for my husband, who is very interested in archeology and paleontology as a hobby. He says it is a good book with a lot of interesting information. It is just a little more like a textbook than he would prefer, but he did enjoy it and says he will probably read it again.
