On Guerrilla Warfare Paperback – September 21, 2000
Purchase options and add-ons
One of the most influential documents of our time, Mao Tse-tung's pamphlet on guerrilla warfare has become the basic textbook for waging revolution in underdeveloped and emergent areas throughout the world.
Recognizing the fundamental disparity between agrarian and urban societies, Mao advocated unorthodox strategies that converted deficits into advantages: using intelligence provided by the sympathetic peasant population; substituting deception, mobility, and surprise for superior firepower; using retreat as an offensive move; and educating the inhabitants on the ideological basis of the struggle. This radical new approach to warfare, waged in jungles and mountains by mobile guerrilla bands closely supported by local inhabitants, has been adopted by other revolutionary leaders from Ho Chi Minh to Che Guevara.
Mao wrote On Guerrilla Warfare in 1937 while in retreat after ten years of battling the Nationalist army of Chiang Kai-shek. Twelve years later, the Nationalist Chinese were rousted from the mainland, and Mao consolidated his control of a new nation, having put his theories of revolutionary guerrilla warfare to the test.
Established governments have slowly come to recognize the need to understand and devise means to counter this new method of warfare. Samuel B. Griffith's classic translation makes Mao's treatise widely available and includes a comprehensive introduction that profiles Mao, analyzes the nature and conduct of guerrilla warfare, and considers its implications for American policy.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2013I imagine that the intended target audience of this book was two-fold; firstly to be read and understood by Mao's many followers in the Chinese Red Army ranks, and secondly to perhaps be read by those non-Chinese communist revolutionaries in Vietnam, Korea, and elsewhere. This is entirely my own thinking and I do not know if there is any truth to this. However, the reason why I believe this is so is the format of the book. By this I mean that the book is short and presents ideas and concepts which are basic and easy to understand. This allows the communist-inspired guerrilla commander in Manchuria circa late 1930s to pick this book up, read it quickly, and implement the basic core concepts and thus provide for Mao a more unified front with which to fight the Japanese.
And so it is that this book does not necessarily present revolutionary or groundbreaking concepts about guerrilla warfare. While I found myself having many of those "ahhh, I get it" moments, there is no big secret formula hidden in the pages, but again, I do not believe that this was the intention of Mao Zedong when he wrote the book. And as many reviewers have said before me, much of the core concepts can be seen when studying the Vietnam War and countless other modern guerrilla wars.
Overall I highly recommend this book to be read by all those interested in military history, or those who wish to gain a better understanding of contemporary conflicts. The shortness of this book adds to it's strength, making it hard to argue against reading it (you can read it in a few short sittings).
This publication did suffer from a handful or errors, such as missing '.'s, typos such as "o" in place of "of", etc. But hardly did this render the book unreadable. I also believe that if this book was priced lower, at say $6-7.00, it would be a must-own. The sum of these things, however, do not add up to anything less then a full 5 stars. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2022I decided to replace my well-worn paperback copy with this hard copy. The book was in good condition and the text easy to read. To this day I think Mao is overrated as a strategist. Most of his successes were due to the deteriorating situation in China largely caused by Japan's invasion and a lack of national unity. However, I can't deny the importance of this work based on the number of rural insurgencies around the world that used it as a guideline.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2022Looks like it’s supposed to, maos popular book but one the inside it’s different. There is two books in one. First The Velveteen Rabbit, complete with introduction, and the black and white pictures. Then what I paid for Maos On Guerrilla Warfare. Both were good reads, must of been a miss print. Maybe it’ll be worth money in acouple hundred years, who knows. God Bless and keep your powder dry!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2015I loved this book. Finally I understood the most important principals behind asymmetrical warfare which is going to be the most common form of combat for the West in this century.
A guerrilla fighter can not hope to beat a conventional army. He doesn't even intend to. The real battle is the propaganda battle. A conventional army can not hope to win the propaganda battle. Which is why well equipped and determined conventional forces win wars over guerrilla forces only to leave running with their tails between their legs a few years later.
Propaganda war leaves the conventional forces feeling unsafe, illegitimate and not even sure who or where the real enemy is. In understanding this here lies the key to defeating guerrilla forces. With forces like Muslim Brotherhood, IRGC, Hamas, ISIS, AQ and Hezbollah on the rise the West will have to learn to fight a completely different kind of war other than it is used to.
Losing this war, is not an option. We all know the consequences
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2007Looking at the other reviews on this book, many complain that it is a simple, out-dated work, with few insights provided. I see this book as being written with the goal of a general educating his soldiers. Short this book creates the structure of how the general want's to see guerrilla units created (this book focusses only on guerrilla warfare). The reason that there is no complex indepth writting in this book is that it would limit the officers' ability to use their imagination to create fully functioning guerrilla units. Leaving the flesh off, forces the leaders to adapt to their specific area of operations putting the flesh on the structure themselves. There is a lot to be drawn out of this book, and to only skim or read it once is doing the reader doing himself/herself a diservice. I bet that Bin Laden has read this book more than once, now if we can only get our politicians to read it once.

Like it or not, Mao is the dominant figurehead for the 21st Century.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Classic
The Classic. Though it was written in 1937 and republished in this format in 1962, Mao's insights are still relevant and useful today - for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear. This book should be read in conjunction with Sun Tzu, "The Art of War."

5.0 out of 5 stars Sehr gutes Buch aber
