- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2025Delivered in time. A good book for college students.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2011This is the grammar text I wish I had in high school, because the point of the text is to show students that grammatical structures have different effects on readers; consequently, learning the use of the different grammatical structures and writing strategies allows one to write more precisely--which is to say, it allows one to more carefully lead his or her reader to understand what one is actually saying in one's writing. This text assumes that students have a basic familiarity with the parts of speech and parts of a sentence, and some exposure to various grammatical terms. Using a sentence-combining approach, the first section of the text walks students through the creation of more precise, meaning-controlled sentences through combining exercises. In the second section, the student is led through various strategies for presenting information at the paragraph and essay level. As the title suggests, the text helps students to understand WHY one chooses to use a participial phrase instead of an adjective clause (though it first teaches students what those are), or an absolute instead of an appositive; or why one chooses to repeat a structural element in a series; or why one puts certain kinds of information in a sentence or paragraph before other kinds of information. I used it last year in teaching students British Literature, and the growth in sophistication of their writing was dramatic. The only off-putting feature of the book is that it is set in a fictional composition class, and so the text is presented as the story of this class, complete with a teacher, and a bunch of students. By the end of the book you even have a sense of the various students' personalities--which I suppose is a testament to the author's skill. But it is pretty hokey. Nevertheless, it is still a great text.
