About the author

Steven A. Beebe (Ph.D. University of Missouri-Columbia) is Regents’ and University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies at Texas State University. During his 33 years of service at Texas State he served as Chair of his department for 28 years and also served as Associate Dean of College of Fine Arts and Communication for 25 years. Prior to being on the faculty at Texas State, Dr. Beebe was a tenured faculty member at the University of Miami for 10 years. Steve is the author and co-author of fourteen books (with multiple editions totaling more than 75 books), more than 60 articles and book chapters, as well as over 160 papers and presentations at professional conferences. He is co-author of the first interpersonal communication book published in Russian. His books have also been published in Chinese. Steve’s communication books have been used at hundreds of colleges and universities by millions of readers throughout the world, making him one of the top communication textbook authors in the United States. Dr. Beebe has been a Visiting Scholar at both Oxford University and Cambridge University. He made international headlines when conducting research at Oxford; he identified a manuscript written by author C. S. Lewis that was the partial opening chapter of a book that was to have been co-authored with J. R. R. Tolkien called Language and Human Nature. Steve’s most recent book, C. S. Lewis and the Craft of Communication, is based, in part, on the discovered manuscript fragment. He is Past President of the National Communication Association (NCA), the largest professional communication association in the world. He continues to be in demand as a speaker, consultant, and facilitator for numerous corporate, educational, and government organizations.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2015CEO's and aspiring leaders need to buy and actually read this book! This book is actually a keeper, but I had to return it since I rented it. I'm glad I had a print copy for the class I took. This is a book I would like to reference in the 'real world' so I'd like to get an electronic version for reference and to print when necessary. Very applicable information. This book is good at detailing the NUANCES of what makes a good presenter - those things you kind of know but can't put your finger on. I also really like the special pages with tips and info marked in grey. GOOD STUFF!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2012I purchased this book for a semester-long graduate class and so far it has been wonderful. The conversational writing style makes me feel like I am barely reading a textbook and more like listening to a very well-rounded speaker discuss the background and steps to developing a successful and engaging training session. Beebe, Mottet, and Roach do a fabulous job of making this book entertaining and engaging while also INCREDIBLY useful as well.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2017Kindle Version:
Good book. Easy to read, yet full of great, easily adaptable information, especially for beginners, but fitting refresher for season trainers also.
If you purchased it for school it has the real page numbers for easy referencing and it also has flashcards.
Be aware that for the Kindle edition the publisher only allows you to use it on two of your devices, which does not work well for me because I like to sync my files and books with my iPad, Surface 3, and PC, depending on where I am (work, in the car, in my study).
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2020I’m thoroughly enjoying this book. It’s actually a page-turner for me despite being a textbook for school. The book arrived quickly and truly was brand new!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2020Perfect for class, one I want to keep for work as I can refer to this!
