From the Back Cover
PCI-X is the successor to the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Bus Specification, the current standard that enables communication between peripheral devices and the computer processor. A major improvement over the older PCI technology, PCI-X enables significantly higher performance with transfer rates of up to 1.06 GB per second.
PCI-X System Architectureis a detailed and comprehensive guide to the PCI-X technology. It highlights the many changes and improvements from PCI 2.2 to PCI-X, so that you can build on your PCI knowledge to master PCI-X with greater ease. The book discusses the drawbacks of PCI and how PCI-X solves these problems, achieving faster transfer rates. In addition, it presents in-depth information and practical guidance on the PCI-X transaction protocol, device configuration for PCI-X, load tuning, PCI-X bridges, error detection and handling, and electrical issues.
You will find specific information on such key topics as:
- Device types and bus initialization, including Hot-Plug PCI-X initialization
- Dword and burst commands
- Bus arbitration, latency rules, and burst transactions
- Transaction termination
- Split completion messages
- 64-bit transactions
- Bridge and non-bridge configuration registers
- Load tuning, including adjustable fields and registers, split completion buffers, and adjusting timeslice values
- PCI-X to PCI-X bridges
- Handling master abort, attribute phase parity errors, and split read errors
Anyone who designs or tests hardware or software that involves the PCI-X bus will findPCI-X System Architecturean essential resource for understanding and working with this important technology.

About This Book
The MindShare Architecture Series
The MindShare Architecture book series includes: ISA System Architecture, EISA System Architecture, 80486 System Architecture, PCI System Architecture, Pentium Processor System Architecture, PCMCIA System Architecture, PowerPC System Architecture, Plug and Play System Architecture, CardBus System Architecture, Protected Mode Software Architecture, Pentium Pro and Pentium II System Architecture, USB System Architecture, FireWire System Architecture, PCI-X System Architecture, and AGP System Architecture. The book series is published by Addison-Wesley.
Cautionary Note
The reader should keep in mind that MindShare's book series often deals with rapidly evolving technologies. This being the case, it should be recognized that the book is a "snapshot" of the state of the targeted technology at the time that the book was completed. We attempt to update each book on a timely basis to reflect changes in the targeted technology, but, due to various factors (waiting for the next version of the spec to be "frozen," the time necessary to make the changes, and the time to produce the books and get them out to the distribution channels), there will always be a delay.
This Book Assumes PCI Background Knowledge
As with all MindShare books, this book assumes that the reader has prior knowledge of PCI (because PCI-X is built on top of PCI). Likewise, the PCI-X spec assumes prior knowledge of PCI and describes only how PCI-X differs from PCI as described in the PCI 2.2 spec and the 1.1 PCI-to-PCI Bridge Architecture spec. The reader may gain this background knowledge by reading the MindShare book entitled PCI System Architecture, Fourth Edition (published by Addison-Wesley).
Specifications This Book Is Based On
This book is based on the version 1.0 PCI-X specification and the version "AF" Errata and Clarifications document. Please note the author received the Errata and Clarifications document quite late in the development of the book and every effort was made to integrate this new information. In one or two cases, the amount of time that it would have taken to study and integrate the new information would have delayed the publishing of the book. Rather than delay the book, the author chose to clearly identify the area in question and urges the reader to read the appropriate section of the Errata and Clarifications document.
Who This Book Is For
This book is intended for use by hardware and software design and support personnel. The tutorial approach to the subject may also make the book useful to technical people who are not involved in design or support.
Prerequisite Knowledge
The reader should be familiar with PC and PCI System Architectures. MindShare's ISA System Architecture and PCI System Architecture books provide that foundation material. PCI-X is built upon the PCI bus standard. This book assumes that the reader has a working knowledge of the PCI bus protocol.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2001the book is a great reference guide for pci-x
(a relatively new standard).
everything about this computer architecture is explained in details.the only limit is the purpose of this book, that remain in the bounds of a reference guide and not a programming & architecture guide.
the differences between pci and pci-x are clearly explained.
if you don't know anything about standard pci architecture and assembly programming, this book is not for you; but
if you are a system designer interested in pci-x, this book is a must.
