About the Author
Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He chaired the university’s department of sociology, social work, and criminal justice for almost 20 years – while specializing in research in crime and delinquency. He has taught dozens of courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level in both on-ground and on-line environments. Schmalleger is the author of many books and journal articles, including the standard-setting Criminal Justice Today, 14/e (Pearson); Criminal Justice: A Brief Introduction, 12/e (Pearson); Criminology Today, 8/e (Pearson); Criminology, 3/e (Pearson); Criminal Law Today, 6/e (Pearson); Corrections in the Twenty-First Century, 6/e (McGraw-Hill; with John Smykla); Courts and Criminal Justice in America (Pearson; with Larry Siegel and John Worrall); Juvenile Delinquency, 10/e (Pearson; with Clem Bartollas); and Policing, 2/e (Pearson; with John Worrall). Schmalleger has worked with U.S. military personnel -- primarily members of the Army’s CID, MP’s, Air Force SP’s and members of Air Force OSI from the late 1970s to the early 1990s helping officers make successful transition to civilian life. Schmalleger’s philosophy of both teaching and writing can be summed up in these words: “In order to communicate knowledge we must first catch, then hold, a person’s interest—be it student, colleague, or policymaker. Our writing, our speaking, and our teaching must be relevant to the problems facing people today, and they must in some way help solve those problems.

About the author

Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He holds degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Ohio State University, having earned both a master's (1970) and a doctorate in sociology (1974) from Ohio State University with a special emphasis in criminology.
From 1976 to 1994, he taught criminology and criminal justice courses at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. For the last 16 of those years, he chaired the university's Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice. The university named him Distinguished Professor in 1991.
Schmalleger has taught in the online graduate program of the New School for Social Research, helping to build the world's first electronic classrooms in support of distance learning through computer telecommunications. As an adjunct professor with Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, Schmalleger helped develop the university's graduate program in security administration and loss prevention. He taught courses in that curriculum for more than a decade.
Frank Schmalleger is the author of numerous articles and more than 30 books, including the widely used Criminal Justice Today (Pearson Education, 2023), Criminology Today (Pearson Education, 2024), Corrections in the 21st Century (McGraw-Hill, 2024), Policing (Pearson, 2024, with John Worrall), Courts and Criminal Justice in America (Pearson, 2022, with Larry Siegel and John Worrall), American Criminal Procedure Today (Oxford University Press, 2022, with John Feldmeier), Juvenile Delinquency (Pearson 2025, with Clem Bartollas and Hemant Sharma), Constitutional Law Today (Cognella, 2023, with John M. Schmalleger's philosophy of both teaching and writing can be summed up in these words: "In order to communicate knowledge we must first catch, then hold, a person's interest--be it student, colleague, or policymaker. - Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2021The book we received is in terrible condition has water damage and outside cover is torn. We will still use the book but we want you to note this. Thank you,
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2020I got this book for a college course and it was very useful for studying the topics of the course! Easy to use and understand.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2020I needed this for my criminal justice class. It served it purpose. Great chapters and it covers the basics of criminal justice.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2018Although it is a textbook and I had to study the material... it is extremely informative and up to date highly recommended it if you want to get an A in your Criminology course.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2018What a great book! I honestly am really into it. One of the funnest courses I have taken in a bit, btw. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to get into or know more about criminal justice and law.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2019The book looked more new then used it was worry the price just for a semester rather then paying $183 for a new one.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2020Bought this because I needed it for an elective I took at my university (I blame Forensic Files for getting me interested in Criminal Justice). That said there are many other documentaries or *much* more affordable books with similar fundamental concepts explained if you're simply trying to get into this topic. As is the case with most university level textbooks, I highly recommend renting the book if you absolutely must for your course. You can always go back and buy it another time if you truly loved it. (Has anyone *loved* a textbook enough to purchase it though?) That said, this book is a decent resource and explains the subject matter in a way that is easily understandable but at this price point unless you *absolutely* must 100% have it to cite for your Intro to Criminal Justice course, I'd pass.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2019I loved the book, I used it for a computer class... I didn't read it much, but it worked for my needs.
