About the Author
Dr. Michael D. Johnson spent most of his youth in the fields and forests of rural Washington, observing nature. He earned his B.S. degree in zoology from Washington State University and then moved east to earn a Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan. After completing a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Harvard Medical School he joined the faculty of West Virginia University, where he remained for most of his career.
In 2001, Dr. Johnson moved to the Middle East, where he served first as the founding dean of Oman Medical College in the Sultanate of Oman and then as associate dean for premedical education at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar. In both positions, he directed the premedical education of students from more than 25 countries. He returned to the United States in 2011 to focus on his writing.
Dr. Johnson received several teaching awards during his career, including the West Virginia University Foundation Outstanding Teacher award and the Distinguished Teacher Award of the School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Physiological Society, the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, the National Association of Biology Teachers, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Whether teaching undergraduates or medical students, Dr. Johnson has always had a keen interest in instilling in students an appreciation of science. He seeks to show students how the advancement of scientific knowledge sometimes raises unforeseen ethical, political, economic, and social issues for all of us to discuss and solve. Through this book, he encourages students to become scientifically literate so that they will feel comfortable making responsible choices as consumers of science.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2018Tough subject for a lot of people but this was an excellent resource for the Human Biology class I was required to take. I didn't buy this book and only rented it through Amazon textbook rentals. But this was a great book and I used it often in my class. If this were my field of study and I needed to keep a book like this as a reference book, I would have absolutely purchased this book. For any middle-school, high school, or college kids that need a book on Human Biology for their science requirement, I think this would be a great book to learn from. If your assigned textbook isn't cutting it, it may be in your best interest to rent this, buy it used, or even invest into it for your college requirement. This book was truly the life-saver for this class for me--it was a required course and I'm not a fan of science or science classes. If you are doing a Biology with a LAB requirement and chose HUMAN BIOLOGY, this book will be PERFECT and NON-INTIMIDATING. I was very happy with this textbook and was so grateful it was made into a book with plenty of illustrations, keynotes, and bold print so I knew what to concentrate on. The way the book is structured breaks it down into different Body Systems, and thus it's even easier to process. The BIOLOGY WITH LAB REQUIREMENT course was a big scary monster in my head, and this book made all the difference in how well I ended up doing to the class. If I needed a permanent reference book on Human Biology, this is a great overview book and it's entirely comprehensive.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2019I got the loose leaf version of this book for my life biology class. I liked how it saved a lot of space in my backpack and was more lightweight than a text book since it was stored in my binder. Also the fact that this loose leaf version was brand new at $75 when I got it at the time made it cheaper or comparable in price to the USED textbook versions of it from my school's bookstore.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2020I took a six-week condensed human biology course over the summer. This textbook didn't collect dust during that time -- it was super helpful and clarified some of the concepts I didn't understand from my professor.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2018Perfectly fine book. Just didn't like that it was said to be delivered to my front door an it was in my mailbox.. way after the mail.normaly runs around 12:30pm-1pm.. it got there maybe around 2:30 maybe 3 since the kids where out of school...had to walk all the way down to my neibors because they normally get our stuff.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2020Rented this for my college course. Does not offer a barcode return, must print a label (barbaric). Will rent more books from amazon because it's the most affordable option.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2023My son ordered this for a college class. It arrived in terrible condition. The pages are dogeared and stained. Unfortunately, he had to keep it as the class had already started.
On a positive note, he has found the book to be helpful in his studies.
