About the author

Tim Harrower has been an editor, designer and columnist at newspapers large (The Oregonian), midsized (The Rochester Times-Union) and small (the Times weeklies in Beaverton, Ore.). He became a journalist in the '80s after his first career choice -- rock 'n' roll superlegend -- fizzled out.
Harrower's first book, "The Newspaper Designer's Handbook," has been indispensable in newsrooms and classrooms around the world, translated into Russian, Chinese and Polish. His follow-up, "Inside Reporting," has been America's most popular news writing textbook, ranked #3 in Business Insider's list of all-time best journalism books.
His latest book is "The Dinosaur Owner's Manual," a children's book for adults, full of adorable illustrations and useful advice on the care and feeding of your pet dinosaur.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2017Simple, clear, concise, and accurate presentation of the elements of newspaper design. Concepts are well defined. Author is a clear communicator and his writing style augments the value of the information he is presenting. There are ample visual designs presented in is book and elements of typology, template formatting, page design, font sizing, and visual organization are especially useful for beginners in newspaper design. Question and answer quizes reinforce the concepts in the material. Have no doubt, author Tim Harrower is an excellent writer and he presents key concepts with verbal and visual support. This book is especially good for beginning visual media design related to creating newspapers. It is something that both journalism and visual media teachers can use for their beginning students in highschool and junior college classroom situations. A big plus for this Newspaper Designer Handbook. Beginning issues present in this handbook can be applied to later visual media design and may prove useful in understanding beginning concepts in InDesign software by Adobe.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2014I stumbled onto a YouTube video from a high school newspaper sponsor saying that this is required reading. I bought it. It far exceeds my greatest hopes. The content is complete. The information is clear. It is concise. It is precise.
Buy one of these, download a copy of Scribus and get going. Whether you are working on an existing school, college or community paper, or want to start your own niche newspaper; this book is every bit as essential as a printing press. BTW, consider [...] if you're starting something of your own. They just might be everything you need.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2019This product is great! It clearly lays out the best ways to design a paper and has plenty of examples. I also enjoyed that there were pages that showed the thought process behind certain page displays. It shows how the designer first laid out the page and shows why he made certain changes along the way.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2014It's kind of hard for me to rate a textbook. I got this as a cheap upgrade to the much older 4th edition. The newer version was definitely a step up. This book isn't the most recent edition though - so it's hard to say what has changed since then. I was a little annoyed that some pages/examples were carried over straight from the 4th edition.
The book did give me some nice ideas for designing a newspaper though. And so far as I can tell, it's one of the few remaining sources for such information.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2019Thank goodness I met our local newspaper editor who recommended this book for my journalism class. It offers a variety of suggestions and examples to help with layouts, headlines, photos, etc. Our latest edition looks so much better after using the suggestions. If you teach journalism you need this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2011With no experience whatsoever in the journalism or newspaper industry I decided to start the first Hispanic all Spanish newspaper in central Alabama. This was a life saver. Using what I learned from this one book, I was able to break-even on the third edition and show a $1,200 profit on the fourth. A national syndicated paper discovered it and thought I had been in the business for years. They were impressed with the layout. This book definitely should be on your shelf if you're interested in starting or enhancing a newspaper. I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2010This spiral-bound text is an interesting, colorful, and informative introduction to the principles of newspaper design. It describes the elements and fundamental principles of page layout, including how to lay out pages with varying numbers of columns, in broadsheet and tabloid formats, with or without photographs. The text is amply illustrated with numerous full-color illustrations of various techniques, showing both good and bad examples. Fun to read and a nifty reference.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2010It is a very useful book even if you are not the main designer of the newspaper. You can get a clear idea of what is necessary for page layout and what photos and headlines are necessary in order to deliver a readable product.
The photos in the book are useful and are explained well. I am sure I will use this beyond my class.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent manual
This book is an excellent design and layout manual for anyone new to producing a newspaper. No reference on to how to deal with ads that disrupt the page design, but that apart this is a really good book and worth the money.
