Landmarks in Humanities, 3rd Edition 3rd Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
The text reflects the author's extensive background in the study of Humanities, which has enabled her to craft a narrative that is at once brief and comprehensive, giving students a thorough understanding of the interrelatedness of various modes of expression―art and architecture, literature, philosophy, and music--without overwhelming them with detail. Each of the text's fifteen chapters is centered on a key idea related to the period being discussed, and contains a series of valuable pedagogical features including timelines, high-quality maps, and boxed material. Each chapter also takes a unique cultural or historical point of view, often through primary sources, the stylistic relationship between two or more images and ideas or between text and image, and contemporaneous non-Western cultural landmarks and cross-cultural influences.
In this edition, each chapter opens with “A First Look” at a landmark work that illustrates the key idea of the chapter and acts as a cultural guidepost to that chapter’s overarching theme. This new feature explains the artwork’s significance as a landmark in its own time as well as in ours.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2013I had to get this book for my Geology class. I really like the convenience of having an e-book. It's lighter and cheaper to rent this for my Kindle than it was to buy the book new (or used) for only 10 weeks. The pictures look great and I can highlight important information without destroying the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2016This text book is exactly what I needed for class. It was in perfect condition. It has a lot of good information. If anyone is interested in the architecture and learning about grand structures, I would recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2019Easy to read and understand. One of the most fun textbooks I've read to date.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2014Normally I prefer hard copies of text books so I can hold them and read anywhere and highlight text, but I needed this one quickly. So I tried the free Kindle download and rented the book. A bit of a pain to tote my laptop to class, but I really liked that Kindle tracked where I stopped previously, and you can highlight on-line, and super easy to look up words or quotes.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2019How has nobody else not noticed it says "3nd" instead of "3rd." That made me laugh. Other than that, it was in pretty rough shape but it was used so I cant complain too much.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2013This book is very informing and has great illustrations and pictures of the subjects and topics. The chapters are broken down into sensible categories and they are easy to follow.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2013I rented this book at the beginning of the fall 2013 semester, and it seemed to be in fine condition upon receipt. After taking the book back and forth from my house to my school (always packed safely in my backpack), I noticed that the spine of the book was coming apart. This caused some of the pages to actually be disconnected from the spine. I thought it may have been me being rough on the book, but after asking some of the others in my class if they had experienced a similar situation, I learned that most of the people who had rented or purchased the book were indeed having the same trouble; the spine was coming apart leaving some pages unglued and falling out. I am not yet sure if I will be charged for the damage, but I will certainly be unhappy if/when I am. Other than the quality of the book itself, I found the rental service to be a nice change from buying the book only to use for one semester.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2016Cool book. Studying Humanities. Would recommend even if you aren't studying Humanities. The art history is awesome in this book.
