Sean M. Blitzstein, M.D. is the Director, Psychiatry Clerkship and Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Ivan Oransky, M.D. is managing editor, online, at Scientific American. Previously, he was deputy editor of The Scientist, editor in chief of the medical student section of the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) and of Praxis Post, an online magazine of medicine and culture. Oransky is the author or co-author of four books, including The Common Symptom Answer Guide (McGraw-Hill, 2004). Ivan also holds an appointment at NYU Medical School as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, and teaches at the City University of New York's Graduate School of Journalism.

Lange Q&A Psychiatry, 10th Edition So far I have completed the first 2 Chap and believe that this is a great resource. The questions are interesting, well written, and incorporate concepts from other fields of medicine to make the clinical scenarios realistic. I recommend Lange Q&A for learning about Psychiatry,and preparing for the NBME shelf exam. Other students that took the shelf before me recommended this book in addition to World and rather than "other" popular Psych question books.

Addendum:
After completing the NBME Psych Shelf exam I believe this book was instrumental in doing well (contrary to popular belief Psych Shelf is not easy).

Best source for Psychiatry Shelf, superior to Uworld in difficulty, topic coverage and explanation. All major topics covered, though there is some nitpicky/random questions- but vast majority will be seen in some form or another on shelf. Useful when used in conjunction with FA Psych. Questions are much shorter then actual shelf, but great in teaching you to differentiate similar sounding psych diseases. Child, Pharm, and DDX sections particularly high yield. Psych shelf is hard, study up for it!

I used this book along with the Uworld questions, and 2nd/3rd edition of First Aid psychiatry (3rd is a little info than the 2nd but I used the 2nd and saw no difference). I got an A on the shelf (this was my only A out of all my shelf exams). This book has EXCELLENT explanations for each question and helps differentiate between differential diagnoses. THIS BOOK, UWORLD AND FIRST AID PSYCH IS ALL YOU NEED TO MAKE AN A!!!!

I found this book to be very good at hammering the DSM IV criteria (it's V now but a lot is still the same) for different disorders into your brain. Also hammers in important drug side effects. Could use less of the different testing modalities that aren't probably going to be on the shelf. Overall a great source for more questions in addition to Uworld.
