- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2015So this book is about proofreading in a very technical sense. That is, this book is about reading printer proofs and correcting them before they are published for general consumption of the public. The book talks about many different aspects of this job, including the aptitude required for such work and different ways of going about the work. How to train yourself to find errors in a text and how to mark those errors for correction.
Perhaps the most helpful aspects of this book is its chapter on developing style sheets to help keep a manuscript consistent with one style. It also talks about reading slowly and training yourself to do so, reading out loud and comparing live and dead copies. It also covers what you as a proofreader are responsible for, and not responsible for, and how to tactfully query an author for clarification where necessary.
Towards the end of the book it delves into highly technical areas of the proofreader’s domain. I never knew there was so much to know concerning fonts and typefaces, but I learned what a serif was.
The book also warns against reading a text backwards. I found that bit of advice to be refreshing. It sets the tone for the type of helpful advice the book gives the reader and potential proofreader. It debunks a lot of “helpful” advice people have given you over the years, and gives you the tools you need to really do a professional job and not burn out.
I highly recommend this book to writers and would be authors, translators and publishers, and especially graduate students writing dissertations. Really, the book will be helpful for anyone who finds themselves proofreading even if it is your son’s term paper, or your friend’s dissertation. If the job is worth doing it is worth doing well, and this book teaches you what goes into doing this job well.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2015If you see anything that is a McGraw-Hill book or reference material, BUY IT! Trust me. I have several of McGraw-Hill's books and reference materials, and they are one of the best in their class! The Proofreading Handbook is the most informative one I've seen yet. Also, I never see grammatical mistakes in any of their printed materials. You should try to read a grammar/ linguistic book that I had to read in college. I literally had to translate the writer's language, but I find that McGraw-Hill's materials are always easy to read, understand, follow, and then apply. If you like this one as much as I did, try out "The MGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage." It is better and much more comprehensive than most all others. Perhaps I have seen other reference materials state the same lessons, but not in the same way so I can remember a rule and grasp an idea as easily in the more difficult chapters.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2021This book seems to have covered everything. My favorite part of the book is the examples. They have provided examples of every step and several options of the steps. It is very easy to read without dumbing down. I am happy to add this to my library and will use it often I am sure.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2024I've been getting this book from the library for several months and decided I needed to purchase this book. It's that great to keep on hand for reference.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2022I do part time proofreading g and wanted a classic reference tool. This book is useful, compact and a great guide for writers, publishers and editors.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2021Good reference.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2022I got this book to help me proofreading and I thought it would be a great resource. However, the author discourages against self proofreading so there goes that. I wish I would have read the preview before purchasing the book. It would have save money.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2014My liberal arts education and B.A. in English taught me proper grammar, spelling, punctuation and so forth, but it did not give me the tools of the trade to tell others how to improve their writing. This book shows how to read a text to look for errors and how to mark them so they can be corrected. Excellent book.

3.0 out of 5 stars No adaptado para lo que quería, a pesar de ser un buen libro
Es demasiado profesional y no tanto útil para lo que quería. Pero en sí, me parece un libro bien hecho
