The Making of a Miracle: The Untold Story of the Captain of the 1980 Gold Medal–Winning U.S. Olympic Hockey Team Hardcover – Illustrated, January 28, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
On the fortieth anniversary of the historic "Miracle on Ice," Mike Eruzione—the captain of the 1980 U.S Men’s Olympic Hockey Team, who scored the winning goal—recounts his amazing career on ice, the legendary upset against the Soviets, and winning the gold medal.
It is the greatest American underdog sports story ever told: how a team of college kids and unsigned amateurs, under the tutelage of legendary coach—and legendary taskmaster—Herb Brooks, beat the elite Soviet hockey team on their way to winning the gold medal at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. No one believed the scrappy Americans had a real shot at winning. Despite being undefeated, the U.S.—the youngest team in the competition—were facing off against the four-time defending gold medalist Russians. But the Americans’ irrepressible optimism, skill, and fearless attitude helped them outplay the seasoned Soviet team and deliver their iconic win.
As captain, Mike Eruzione led his team on the ice on that Friday, February 22, 1980. But beating the U.S.S.R was only one of the numerous challenges Mike has faced in his life. In this inspiring memoir, he recounts the obstacles he has overcome, from his blue-collar upbringing in Winthrop, Massachusetts, to his battle to make the Boston University squad; his challenges in the minor leagues and international tournaments to his selection to the U.S. team and their run for gold. He also talks about the aftermath of that stupendous win that inspired and united the nation at a time of crisis in its history.
Eruzione has lived a hockey life full of unexpected twists and surprising turns. Al Michaels’ famous call in 1980—"do you believe in miracles? YES!"—could have been about Mike himself. Filled with vivid portraits—from his hard-working, irrepressible father to the irascible Herb Brooks to the Russian hall of famers Tretiak, Kharlamov, Makarov, and Fetisov—this lively, fascinating look back is destined to become a sports classic and is a must for hockey fans, especially those who witnessed that miraculous day.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2024Thank you to all the athletes who dedicate so much of their lives to participate in the Olympics.
Mike Eruzione has written a great first person telling of his journey, and included others who were essential not only in the 1980 US Olympic Men's Hockey team, but of who made him the man he is, and why, all these years later, he remains an icon.
It was a pleasure to read Mike's book.
I wish the Olympic teams were still filled with true amateur athletes. Seeing professional athletes in the Olympics just isn't the same, so perhaps that also adds to our continued devotion to the USA's 1980 Olympic Hockey Team; for the passion and heart each athlete demonstrated.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2021Despite my strong interest in the 1980 US Olympic hockey team, I debated buying this book. I’ve already seen both the “Do you believe in miracles” documentary and the Disney “Miracle” film. What more is there to know?
But after reading the reviews I decided to take a chance on it and it does not disappoint. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how much more insight this book lends to that landmark event. It also gives you a fascinating perspective on the composition, character and values of the members of that team.
Eruzione’s detailed description of the game vs. the Soviets is a front row seat not only to the happenings within the game but also to the observations and strategy employed by the US team to unnerve and rattle the Soviets. The subtleties of his observations are a clear window to how the unexpected US victory became possible.
The book also provides additional information on the team’s abrasive and determined coach Herb Brooks. Brooks was brilliant in his approach to generating the very best performance from a team while simultaneously encouraging them to believe that a such an upset could actually happen. My already substantial respect for Brooks increased further after reading this book.
Behind it all, I also could not help but to admire Mike Eruzione’s stable and intelligent response to this historical event in which he played an integral role. It is no surprise Brooks chose Eruzione as team Captain. I was also pleased to learn that the level of interest in that game remains high despite the amount of time that has passed.
Whatever Mike Eruzione made from this book and from any/all of his other activity related to the US victory in 1980, it is a pittance compared to what he gave the country when he made “the goal heard around the world.” His performance, that team and their gold medal are permanent reminders that victory is always possible - even in the face of a formidable and strongly favored opponent.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2021A solid quality work by the man who lived it. For those of us who remember where we were when it happened, it provides great context. The theme is family - the Eruziones and the 1980 Olympic hockey team. It reminds us what we can do if we put our selves aside and focus on "we". A message that needs to be said a lot more today. Well done and adds to the narrative of the team.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2020The game between the USA and Soviet Union in 1980 was the first hockey game I ever watched. As an Olympics junkie, every sport interested me. As I cleaned the house, I listened to the game. Stopping to watch now and then. Finally I realized the US could win and I sat down to watch. It was an incredible moment when they won.
This book captures the times, moment and the impact of that victory. Easy to read, the narrative took me back to the time and that moment. That Miracle. I urge everyone to step back in time and relive one of the greatest moments in sports history. You won't be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2020My nephew is a rookie professional hockey player. His team has it's ups and owns and I try to keep his confidence up during the trials. I thought what a perfect gift for his birthday. He just told me he rarely reads books, but picked this up and can't put it down. Inspirational on a lot of levels.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2020Before the 1980 Olympics, I had never even heard of Mike Eruzione. On February 22, 1980, Team USA shocked the world by defeating the greatest hockey team on the planet, the Soviet Union. No one in the world, much less in the USA believed that it could actually be done, but Mike Eruzione and his fellow teammates "had a feeling" that something great was going to happen. The score was tied at 3-all with 10-minutes left in the game. Rizzo's parents were in the crowd and Jeep, Mike;s father, told his wife that his boy, Mike "was due". Well Jeep was right. Using a defensive player as a screen, Mike Eruzione made the shot heard 'round the world! The shot still echos in the hearts of all Americans who saw it happen. This book gives us the life story of the Captain of that amazing team. You will live his life up to and feel what he and his family felt when he made that winning shot. All of the emotions are there and you will feel them along with the team. I too, cried when our great American gold medal winning heroes stood and sang The National Anthem as our flag was raised. I was proud to be an American then and regardless of politics, still am! . Buy this book and you are guaranteed to relive those magical days! USA, USA USA!!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2023I really enjoyed this book, and I remember The Game like it was yesterday. Mike Eruzione is a natural-born storyteller. Reading about his childhood in Winthrop MA and the backstory of The Game was super-interesting. Highly recommend.
