A little girl, her brother, and a mischievous Westie climb aboard their "one-horse open sleigh" to deliver a Christmas gift to their grandmother, and high jinks abound. As they dash through the snowy landscape, everyone tumbles out of the sleigh to the shock of nearby deer. The Westie takes off on a merry chase with a hare and a fox and the siblings encounter a myriad of curious animals (a picture glossary of the animals encountered is appended). Eventually the trio arrive at grandmother's house—and in a clever twist, grandpa happens to be Santa. The family straps on their ice skates and glide joyfully across the frozen river. Jeffers's signature watercolor-and-ink paintings capture the soft winter landscape, ensuring that readers will snuggle a little closer with loved ones. The song lyrics have been altered to fit the plot, but they are mostly intact and still very singable.     Review:

    This book was more like a 4.5 star read for me as an adult. The only words throughout the book is the lyrics to the Jingle Bells song which I wasn’t thrilled about.

    However, the pictures throughout the story made things a bit more interesting! It wasn’t something I’d expect from the lyrics & I enjoyed the things the characters’ dog got into with other animals it met along the way to their destination. The art was also cute and very wintery (so a lot of white & slightly more muted colors in addition to a few brighter colors). At the end there is pictured winter animals from the story with their names if the readers want to go back through the story to point them out.

    Summary:

    A girl, a boy, their pony & their dog enjoy a snowy sleigh ride to grandma’s house. And along the way they have fun with seeing an assortment of winter creatures!

    this book is perfect for anyone in love with winter and/or christmas. the illustrations are magical and steeped in nature. susan jeffers is a favorite illustrator of mine and i think this is one of her best works. i bought this book last year for my infant grandson, the storyline is simple and it is fun to watch for the forest animals helping santa.
