- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2024This little set is adorable! I have read each story with my 4year old granddaughter and supplied her with the treat after reading the story. She loves reading them ( even without a treat ) over and over. The compact box and little books are just her size! We have such quality time sharing these
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2020I am a First Grade Bilingual teacher and I really enjoyed reading the five short stories. I think these will be great conversation starters for my students to practice their English. I plan to use these little books for my ESL Guided Reading lessons. I only bought one box but plan to buy 4 more for my classroom. Thank you Kevin Henkes for creating these wonderful books!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2007As mentioned in other reviews; this set of books is nicely smallish (5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches), and beautifully drawn, and the 5 stories are lovely. What no one has yet bothered to mention is the answer to "What do you get?" in this smallish, prettily drawn and nicely written set?
You get 5 small, hard cover books in a nice, slick board box;
Lilly's Chocolate Heart, Owen's Marshmellow Chick, Wemberly's Ice-Cream Star, Julius's Candy Corn and Sheila Rae's Peppermint Stick.
Each short story involves a 'treat'; an Easter Marshmellow Chick, some Halloween Candy Corn, a Forth of July ice cream, etc, that barely mention the holiday to which they owe their existance. For example, although Owen does get an "Easter basket", there is no mention of Christmas in Sheila Rae's Peppermint Stick and no mention of why a red, white and blue star-shaped ice-cream would be Wemberly's special treat "on a hot day".
All of which is fine with me, I thoroughly enjoy reading these with my 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 year old kids, even our 18 month old seems to enjoy these stories, but I feel if we were not a Christmas-and-Easter-celebrating household, this set would have been a bit of a bummer. So, consider yourself warned. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2016I bought these for my classroom because my students love Kevin Henkes. These are a nice addition and allow me to give them a quick treat by throwing in an additional story with characters they know and love. I am only giving this four stars because as a teacher, it bothers me that the titles aren't on the cover of each book. I am still teaching my students concepts of print and to look at the title on the cover, so this is confusing for them. I also like to display our books when we do an author study, and it's unclear which book is which unless you are looking at the spine or back (which is not always possible when displaying books). This may seem nit picky but it does matter in the classroom.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2023We love these books so much! My toddler is obsessed with these stories, just wish they were board books and not thin pages that could rip easily.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2016These books are a great setoff simple, quick stories that demonstrate many writing techniques for my students. They are also characters and stories the kids love and enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2014Love this set of Kevin Henkes books! They're smaller mini books, and super cute!! Both of my kids have loved them! Nice for quick easy reads before bed. I've given away a couple sets as birthday gifts and would recommend them to anyone!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2016My 4 year old loves Kevin Henkes, and she comes back to this set time and time again. She loves to read the simple stories to herself and interact with the characters. For example, she likes to pretend to eat Owen's Easter candy and laughs as she tells him his marshmallow chick will be sticky if he leaves it out overnight! A cute box set, especially for little Henkes fans.
