21 Bridges - A Well-Crafted Crime Drama
21 Bridges is a really good movie, but it's a good movie because it's very well done. The plot unfolds pretty much how you would expect it to unfold, but there are so many great performances and well-done shots that I didn't seem to mind so much that this was a "generic" action/drama cop movie, though I really hate to say it was generic. It's a beautifully shot movie, and the action sequences are loud, impactful and do not shy away from violence. I really, really wish this movie had gotten a 4K release because the night time setting and gunplay/action would have played really well in 4K. I think one of the best performances in the movie belongs to Taylor Kitsch, who plays the cold-blooded thief of the duo. He doesn't blink at the thought of killing anyone, but you can see throughout his performance that there's a thread of good intention (in his mind) to what he does and how he acts around others. His partner in crime, played by Stephan James, is excellent in his role positioned against our leading actor.Chadwick Boseman is great as the motivated lead detective who is trying to get to the bottom of the cold-blooded murders of several NYPD officers. The accents in this movie seem very strong but accurate, as I don't have a lot of reference points in real-life, but it's very much a New Yorkers protecting New York story. Sienna Miller plays his partner on the case and does an excellent job as well. J.K. Simmons also showing that little screen time doesn't equate to a small role and shines in his few scenes. I particularly love that the first 2 acts of this film could have been dragged out to be the main story and summed up with one scene, but the movie really finds its own footing in the short third act with a really well-done ending. I love that our main character Andre doesn't quit at just knowing the crime, but he seeks to get to the bottom of it and seeks justice in full & for all.I'm glad I picked this one up finally, and it's recommended to those who like action movies and hard-hitting cop dramas. Again, while it's not particularly unique in any way other than the actors involved, it does do a good job with everything else making it a worthwhile movie to watch. The director's commentary was alright, but I didn't find myself to be learning much about the film that I hadn't already picked up during my first viewing. Other than that, there's a few deleted scenes and that's it for special features. The digital copy is ITUNES ONLY and I don't use Apple, so it's kind of inconvenient but I did redeem it to my account that I never use. If that's a deal-breaker, you'll have to wait for a potential re-release, if at all as it seems this movie kind of slid under the radar after theatrical. Otherwise, check this movie out because it looks great, sounds great, and everyone is on their A-game in 21 Bridges.
