I enjoyed this film. However, I thought it highlighted only police who are bad and leaving out the good, which may exist in many or most professions or careers. One difference being, police have authority, ability to jail, cause one to have a record, have numbers/team, and they carry weapons. I come from a family of police, but have also myself experienced abuse by police. To me, abuse is not only done onto persons of dark color skin, but onto others as well. Although, this film focuses on abuse by police onto African Americans, there is education and information sharing from the film to highlight abuses and hopefully creating reform, training, and respect to persons of dark or other color. Though the film has over the top fiction, it was entertaining to me and I was glad that I saw it. This was not a documentary, but targeting the masses. I suggested the film to others for their learning. I would not take the film too serious, but glean from some of its lessons, and its entertainment value- which was what the writers might have had in mind, I guess. Drama, action, stories, humor, fun, violence, lessons, all in one package.

Der Vergleich mit Bonnie & Clyde ist nicht wirklich passend, Thelma & Louise erscheint mir passender, wobei Queen & Slim dann doch etwas mehr Märchen, von den Charakteren her aber realistischer ist.

Kamera, Schauspiel und Bildqualität sind konstant im grünen Bereich. Den Soundtrack fand ich noch etwas besser, auch wenn er manchmal ein wenig Basslastig ist. Hier ist es Melina Matsouka gelungen deutlich mehr als zum Beispiel Tarantino, zu seinen besten Zeiten abzuliefern. Auch der Film selbst enthält sehr viel von den Dingen die Tarantino noch nie gelungen sind. Ich würde Queen & Slim sogar als einen sehr gelungenen Antagonisten zu solchen Filmen bezeichnen, die ihre Unterhaltung auf einer ganz anderen Ebene bestreiten.

Wer ein durch und durch cooles Roadmovie erwartet wird etwas enttäuscht sein. Die Kamera, die Optik, die Schauspieler, Set, Requisite und auch die Musik haben einen wirklich guten Stil. Die beiden Hauptdarsteller entwickeln sich jedoch in eine andere Richtung.

Zu Anfang könnte man Queen noch für wirklich taff und cool halten, Slim vielleicht eher für etwas naiv, verpeilt, aber auch mutig. Im Verlauf des Films öffnen sich aber die Figuren, der Film zeigt auch ihre Schwächen und Verletzlichkeit. Sie meistern ihre Situation nicht, sondern sind eigentlich von Anfang bis Ende hoffnungslos überfordert, sie wirken nicht heldenhaft. Die ein oder andere Situation wird nicht gemeistert, sondern nur durch pures Glück überstanden. Dafür fangen sie an sich gegenseitig zu vertrauen und entwickeln eine ganz andere und viel glaubhaftere Stärke, als in einer Heldengeschichte möglich wäre.
Ich fand den Film sehr unterhaltsam, die Musik ist klasse, den Schauspielern sieht man gerne zu, weil der Film an einigen Stellen erstaunlich viel Tiefe zeigt.

Trotzdem gilt es diesen Film natürlich nicht zu ernst zu nehmen. Die Handlung selbst würde ich nicht auf die Goldwaage legen, sonst macht man sich selbst den Spaß kaputt. Die Charakterzeichnung hat mir sehr gut gefallen, wobei man schon merkt das Melina Matsoukas bislang Musikvideos gedreht hat. Immerhin ist es gelungen, diesen Film zu kurz erscheinen zu lassen. Hoffentlich folgen diesem ersten Spielfilm noch einige mehr, verglichen mit den üblichen Verdächtigen wie Aronofsky, Farhadi, Lanthimos, Östlund oder Kechiche verfügt die Dame über viel bessere Voraussetzungen um gute Filme zu machen.
