Editorial Reviews

Vinyl LP pressing. 2019 release from the Grammy Award winning artist. Produced by Simpson, Sound & Fury, was recorded primarily at the McGuire Motor Inn in Waterford, Michigan, with his bandmates Bobby Emmett, Chuck Bartels, Miles Miller, who all serve as co-producers along with Grammy nominee John Hill (Cage The Elephant, Portugal. The Man, Bleachers). The album - which Simpson describes as "a sleazy, steamy rock n roll record" - is a marked departure from 2016's acclaimed A Sailor's Guide To Earth, which won Best Country Album and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 59th Grammy Awards.

Sweet Album.
5 Stars
Sweet Album.
I'll be very honest before this album I never heard of Sturgill Simpson. I only came across his music was when I was at a record store and they were playing the track "Sing Along" from this album. Once I went home I searched and listened to the album on YouTube. I knew I had to get the album but on Vinyl. The sound quality is absolutely wonderful and the art design of the cover is great as well. I very much enjoyed this album.

Watched the netflix anime sound & fury and sat there contemplating what i just saw.
Not sure how all those parts fit together but damn that music rocked.
Had to look up who is this Sturgill Simpson guy and found out the music wasnt made for the anime it was the other way around.

First, I like the album a lot, different than the Sailors Guide to Earth or Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, but a good flow from start to finish. Well worth a listen, good stuff.

My warning regarding the source is due to my discovery that I most likely have a "made on demand" CD-R copy burned by amazon and sold by amazon digital services instead of a CD sold by amazon services. This is disappointing as this is a new CD, not something out of print, and leaves me feeling like I want to find an actual pressed copy of the CD rather than the burned CD-R copy that amazon apparently sells. Something just seems sketchy about selling a burned CD at full price, not really sure if they have the same shelf life as a regular CD, or if they have any resale value at all. There is no indication on the CD that I received that it was manufactured by amazon or is a burned CD-R rather than a regular CD, so I'm not really sure which I have as the description for the manufacturing on demand program indicates it will look indistinguishable from a regular CD. Maybe this is overly critical, and maybe there is not much difference between the regular CD and the made on demand burned CD-R, but it leaves a bad taste and in the future I will avoid purchasing new titles through the amazon manufactured on demand program and just look to get a real copy somewhere else rather than a CD-R from amazon.

Having heard a live version of "You Can Have the Crown" on youtube, my only other previous Sturgil Simpson experience was on the Joe Rogan podcast. Safe to say that I had no expectations purchasing Sound and Fury in comparing it to his previous albums. I read the other reviews here and decided to check it out. While I understand some fans of Simpson may be disappointed, I am wholeheartedly impressed. I've always admired artists who evolve and aren't afraid to push the boundaries of their creativity. Obviously Simpson and his band have done this, exploring rock instrumentals, heavy guitars, dance and funk beats, and vocals buried in the mix. I purchased this a week before the Covid 19 panic, and to me, the music, if not the lyrics, seem to be an appropriate soundtrack as I write this.

If fans of Simpson's previous work are exclusively country or alt country fans, it may not be for you. However, if your taste in music runs across more than one genre, you will recognize and appreciate Simpson's growth as well as his talent. For fans of rock, it's an album you will love from start to finish.

Comparing Sound & Fury with Simpson's previous albums (Metamodern and Sailors Guide) is kind of unfair. Comparing gold with platinum still leaves you with two precious metals. Still, daring and ambitious as this album is, it just doesn't scale to the same heights reached in Simpson's past two albums. The lyrics aren't as catchy, and at times almost feel cliched. The strength of his previous 2 albums were their amazing lyrics. While certainly good, this albums lyrics just aren't as memorable. I don't find myself singing songs from this album to myself the way I did with Metamodern. I do admire the drastic shift from traditional country to rock and roll, and many of these songs would be right at home on modern rock radio. Kudos for the cojones. But one of the things that attracted me to Simpson in the first place was his traditional, steel guitar sound. I hope he produces more traditional sounding music in the near future.

Good stuff. Just not Simpson at his peak.

Was recommended this in a good record store. Loved it. This was ordered for my father who loved it!! It is not Sturghill Simpson's normal flavor of music, but a blend of pop, rock, with some electronic elements. Great front to back and you will fall in love with it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome music ! 🙂
