Product Description

Anthony Steffen (THE NIGHT EVELYN CAME OUT OF THE GRAVE, KILLER FISH) stars as the mysterious stranger named Django, a ghost-like figure who walks into a dusty western town with vengeance on his mind. As he finds the men he's looking for, he places a cross with the person's name and death date in the middle of the street before enacting violent revenge! Is Django truly an unstoppable human army-of-one, or an avenging immortal angel of death? An intriguing spaghetti western with gothic horror genre elements, DJANGO THE BASTARD bears striking similarities to Clint Eastwood's film HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER, released four years later. This version of DJANGO THE BASTARD is the alternate English language U.S. version titled THE STRANGERS GUNDOWN, remastered in high-definition widescreen from a beautiful original 35mm negative element.

One HELL of a semi-sequel...quite literally
It's hard to keep a good Django down...or even a dead one, for that matter. Director Sergio Garrone's 1969 film might not be a direct sequel to the Franco Nero classic, but it's still better than almost anything else the character's name has been slapped onto, including Tarantino's re-imagining. Drifting into town like a vengeful spirit, which he just might be, Django (Anthony Steffen) hunts down the men responsible for abandoning their posts during a military attack. The opening sequence, shot with the stylized atmosphere of a horror film, sets expectations high. And even if the rest of Garrone's film can't match it, Django the Bastard is still well above the spaghetti western curve. Steffen's deadpan performance (he also co-wrote the script) is perfect here and manages to never spoil the surprise his character's supernatural origin. In that respect, the film is an obvious influence on Clint Eastwood's High Plains Drifter...all it's missing is a little red paint.

Django the bastard is a fantastic spaghetti Western! Anthony Steffen is brilliant as Django. I see similarities to Clint Eastwood's high plains drifter, but this movie has an altogether different feel with elements edging on horror. (music score). The action is intense and Steffen plays Django to the hilt. This Blu-ray edition is unequalled as the movie looks brand new! 4.25 on the Grit Factor. Highly recommended.

Tall and lanky Anthony Steffen, a Brazilian actor, was Italy's answer to Clint Eastwood during the 1960s Spaghetti Western craze, and probably fooled quite a few cinema goers into thinking that both were the same actor in such classics as A FEW DOLLARS FOR DJANGO and KILLER KID. Steffen was, of course, much more an actor than just being an Eastwood clone and had a long and productive career in Euro films of all kinds. However, when Eastwood made HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER I'm pretty sure he had DJANGO THE BASTARD in mind as DRIFTER appears pretty much a remake of BASTARD. It appears to be a classic case of Eastwood playing Steffen playing Eastwood, which isn't bad, and seeing DJANGO THE BASTARD come to Blu-ray is great news indeed. I recommend this purchase on the sheer entertainment value level of DJANGO THE BASTARD. It's one of the better Spaghetti Westerns and a must for Eastwood/HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER fans.

Sergio Garrone - a name Anglicised to Willy S Regan -directed this interesting little curio that massively influenced High Plains drifter ,the movies have almost identical plots.Anthony Steffan ,who wrote the script under his real name of Antonio de Teffe-stars as Django who along with others of his men was betrayed to the Union Army in the US Civil War.The culprits were his officers -Murdock,Rose and Hawkins .15 years after the event Django returns and kills Hawkins and Rose before going after Murdock ,now a man of wealth and power able to surround himself with gunmen and other hirelings .He lives with his demented brother and his sister in law in a large house .Django systematically goes about eliminating the forces at Murdock's disposal ,including a large Mexican contingent specifically engaged to protect Murdock from Django, who is able to appear and reappear seemingly at will .It becomes clear he is a revenant -a spirit back from the dead to exact retribution. The death Django is most intent on revenging is his own .

Well directed and with a nicely understated Steffan performance this is a well mounted ,violent and influential movie that reapays watching.and not simply for its influence on Eastwood either

Cult spaghetti Western.
Some people think (high plains drifter) was based on this movie. Besides the fact both films have a ghostly figure,Clint,s movie is actually based on Invitation to a gunfight starring Yul Brynner.
The Synapse release I got is in nice condition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mission Rache...
Reviewed in Germany on August 7, 2022
