What You Must Know About Hashimoto’s Disease: Restoring Thyroid Health Through Traditional and Complementary Medicine Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 217 ratings

In the United States, it is estimated that over 20 million people have thyroid problems. And of this number, the most common thyroid condition is Hashimoto’s Disease—a form of hypothyroidism in which the body’s immune system attacks its own thyroid gland. Despite millions of people having this disease, many suffer with life-changing symptoms for years without being diagnosed. And even after diagnosis, many Hashimoto’s patients continue to experience debilitating effects from this disease. Fatigue, muscle and joint pain, weight gain, headaches, hair loss, and throat/neck pain are some of the commonly occurring symptoms. That’s why endocrinologist and thyroid specialist Dr. Brittany Henderson and patient Allison Futterman joined together to write What You Must Know About Hashimoto’s Disease.

Realizing that far too many patients are not getting the information and care they need, the authors created this book to help those who are suffering from this all-too-common form of hypothyroidism. Written in understandable language, the authors give you an insider’s view of what you need to know about Hashimoto’s. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1, Getting to Know Your Thyroid, explains how your thyroid functions, how Hashimoto’s affects your health, and what signs to look for. Part 2, Testing and Diagnosis, looks at the most reliable tests used to detect Hashimoto’s, how they work, and what to expect from testing. Part 3, Treatment and Management, discusses the most effective conventional medications as well as those complementary treatments that have proven to be effective.

Unfortunately, there still remains a lack of understanding of Hashimoto's among patients and health professionals alike. As a serious autoimmune disorder, Hashimoto’s is multifaceted and complex.
What You Must Know About Hashimoto’s Disease provides patients with an invaluable resource that they can rely on at every stage of their journey to greater health.

Review

"This fine pair―the doctor [Brittany Henderson, MD] and the patient [co-author Allison Futterman]―have created a book that fills a gap in the full understanding of Hashimoto’s Disease from two stances. By introducing the combination of medical science with patient response this fine book has finally presented the facts, the history, the diagnostic aspects, the treatment functions and the preventative concepts of thyroid function and disease. It serves as a practical and applicable guide to identifying the symptoms and the tests for and treatments of the most significant state of thyroid dysfunction–Hashimoto’s Disease, an autoimmune disease that results in hypothyroidism . . . Dr. Henderson explains the function of the normal thyroid and the various forms of dysfunction of that important gland, explains the manner in which the diseases are diagnosed, and finally the treatment and management of the hypothyroidism Hashimoto’s Disease produces. The facts are clearly explained with a fine set of responses from Allison as to how patients react and how to detect responses of the various medications meant to correct Hashimoto’s disease. The book is at once thorough and complete yet offered in a completely accessible manner. The result? An indispensable guide for patients with the disease―and for families of patients―and for the general populace who seek to understand their body functions and prevent illness. Recommended."

"Anyone gaining weight or feeling fatigue or muscle or joint pain will likely to be drawn to the possibility that his or her immune system is attacking the thyroid gland. Endocrinologist [Brittany] Henderson and [co-author Allison] Futterman . . . ably describe how this walnut-sized organ should work, what tests can show about the underproduction of thyroid hormone, and how to treat this surprisingly common condition . . . follow the authors’ advice to avoid potential triggers, such as highly processed foods and artificial sweeteners, and to limit caffeine and alcohol intake . . . [a] glossary helps with unfamiliar terms, and a list of resources makes this a very useful resource.” -- Karen Springen ―

"A comprehensive resource of information regarding thyroid disease! Dr. Henderson provides patients with a handbook for understanding the sum of the root causes, as well as the complexities of the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid hormone imbalance."

Michelle Campeau and Denise Roguz (ThyroidChange, The United Voice of Thyroid Patients Worldwide)

"[E]xtremely comprehensive, and aligning with my own views of each thyroid patient being individual, therefore requiring an individual approach. During and after reading this book, I was jealous that Dr. Henderson wasn’t my doctor! It is clear to see from the outset that she is a compassionate and open-minded medical professional, which we need more of as thyroid patients, and she blends mainstream and progressive medicine practises seamlessly, which I loved . . . I don’t align myself with being a cheerleader for only conventional or only functional medicine – I believe that a blend of the two tends to work best – and it’s great to find a well-balanced book that practises this approach, too . . . [B]oth medical professionals and thyroid patients themselves can benefit hugely from this book, supplying them with everything they ought to know, so that more people can live well with Hashimoto’s . . . Instead of promoting one treatment plan, [the authors] uphold that there is no one-size-fits-all approach but instead a need to treat each person as the individuals they truly are. The book equips the reader with so much information that is crucial to their recovery with Hashimoto’s . . . [it] is down-to-earth and also crucially honest. They [Henderson and co-author Allison Futterman] guide you to finding a medical professional with the right experience and qualifications, and they remind us that not everything you read is gospel . . . Overall, this book has become my new favourite."

"Who wouldn't want Dr. Henderson as their own doctor? Her incredibly comprehensive book blends mainstream and progressive medicine practises seamlessly, in order to inform both medical professionals and the thyroid patients themselves of everything they ought to know, so that more can live well with thyroid disease. Instead of promoting one treatment plan, Dr. Henderson upholds that there is no one-size-fits-all approach but instead a need to treat each person as the individual they truly are."

-- Rachel Hill ― The Invisible Hypothyroidism

"Provides patients with an invaluable resource that they can rely on at every stage of their journey to greater health . . . should be considered mandatory reading for anyone diagnosed with this serious medical condition."

Fantastic resource!

Fantastic resource!
My mother has Hashimoto's and has struggled for years to find a resource that she can stay tuned into. At 74, she doesn't have much patience for most sites or books that I have sent her way. Having her best interest and health in mind, I continued to search and found this book. Not only is it easy to read and understand, she loves the perspectives from both doctor and patient. And I am happy to report, she has implemented many of the health strategies recommended in this book. Thank you for writing a book with two perspectives that is broken down into a format that is easy to read and follow. I personally don't have Hashimoto's but found the book very interesting. Prior to gifting the book, I found myself reading through the chapters with genuine interest while being educated about a condition that both my mother and grandmother have, a condition I hope to avoid by implementing the strategies from this book.

I have another on Thyroid but its very technical, I do like the other but this one is super easy to read, and has a lot of lists to help you navigate this irritation in my son's life. Nothing worse than Chronic fatigue in a teen. They're just starting life and they're sucker punched. Well ok, there's worse that can happen but Doctors are very unhelpful!!! His Dr knew June 2020 and never told us and even when Pediatrician told Endo to chop chop and help us, she still didn't admit it was Hashi until I flat out asked her to confirm and then never told us ways of helping his body with food etc.....just here's a pill. People: pick up this book its very helpful. I guess we will always need to let the Dr tell us what we have but then educate ourselves on ways to care for ourselves because they won't.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease over 30 years ago and was NEVER told about a diet plan. Maybe they didn’t know then, but it complicated the diet for celiac and T2 diabetes I was “blessed” with.

I read this book from an entirely different perspective then most, I have Graves disease which is another autoimmune disease of the thyroid. Although this book is for geared for Hashis disease it is a wealth of knowledge for Graves patients as well. We have the same testing, a lot of same struggles, and the same fight on our hands. This book help to explain the different tests and what they mean, the different antibodies and what they do, the different games our immune system is playing with our bodies. Overall now I have a better knowledge of what is going on with my body which helps on the days that I’m feeling run down or over whelmed. Now when I go to the doctor I feel as I’m more informed and can understand more of what is being addressed. I enjoyed this book, they always say knowledge is power and some of the things mentioned in this book give me hope and a better understanding of what is going on in my body. This book is well worth it and is a must read for anyone dealing with an autoimmune disease of the thyroid. Its definitely an eye opener and lets you know that you’re not alone! Love it!! I will definitely refer to it for years to come.

Fantastic and informative book! Written from both patient and doctors view so easy to understand and comprehensive. The authors seem to really understand the nuances of thyroid issues and it reads that way. I believe Dr. Henderson is ground breaking on integration of traditional and complimentary medicine. She explains in book there is not “one fits all” approach to Hashimoto treatment. It was interesting to learn the nuances of TSH/T3/T4 blood tests. Treatment is not just take a pill. Each patient responds differently to medicines, environments, diet, etc. I believe this book will help many many patients suffering from this chronic disease. I believe patients will become empowered when reading this book and wind up receiving better medical care and OUTCOMES!

After recently being diagnosed with Hoshimoto’s I wanted to learn as much as I can about this autoimmune disease. After reading reviews on a few popular books, this one seemed the most well received. It did not disappoint. They’re not selling you any gimmicks. They break down what the disease does, explains how to read your blood work results, explains different treatments and supplements, things to avoid, etc.. It really has a lot of great information that can help you on your journey of understanding Hoshimoto’s.

Dr. Henderson does a great job of not only explaining the complexities of thyroid disjunction but also showing us a clear path to move through it. As an endocrinologist, she uses scientific studies to validate her words, and her time in private practice, working with patients on all parts of the thyroid spectrum, proves out those findings and her recommendations. This book is a valuable handbook for showing those with thyroid challenges how to approach getting the right tests, managing food sensitivities and supplementation, and walking through the many options for thyroid treatment. As a Hashimotos patient, I’ve read many, many books on this subject and can highly recommend Dr. Henderson’s book. Whether you’re starting this journey or are in a place where you’re ready to tweak your care and health, this book meets your needs. Read it and put it on your shelf; you’ll refer to it again and again. I already have.
