Product Description
This gut-wrenching thriller follows a graduate student whose research summons the spirit of the dead. When Helen Lyle hears about Candyman, a slave spirit with a hook hand who is said to haunt a notorious housing project, she thinks she has a new twist for her thesis. Braving the gang-ridden territory to visit the site, Helen arrogantly assumes Candyman cant really exist until he appears, igniting a string of terrifying, grisly slayings. But the police don't believe in monsters, and charge Helen with the crimes. And the only one who can set her free is Candyman.

If you don't know what "Candyman" is, it's a rather thoughtful examination at social class in the United States cleverly disguised as a slasher film. But at its heart, "Candyman" is about a miracle happening at the old Cabrini-Green housing project in Chicago, Illinois, but it takes the entire movie to build up to the miracle. The movie was shot on location at Cabrini-Green, which is almost unthinkable today. The filmmakers made an agreement with the local gang that in exchange for cooperation in filming the movie there, the gang members would get to be in the movie. They also provided security, at least according to one story I read. "Candyman" is a visually stunning movie that captures the urban decay of the old high rises and puts it on film breathtakingly. It really captures 'how the other half lives' rather well.
The movie is, on the surface, a slasher about a grad student, played by Virginia Madsen, doing a thesis on urban legends. She doubts the existence of a mythical figure reportedly haunting the Cabrini-Green housing projects dubbed "Candyman" by its residents and through this doubt summons him and he just makes her life a living hell by framing her for his own crimes. You really have to watch this movie with an open mind to understand and fully grasp what it's really about. Even Roger Ebert, who didn't really like horror movies, said that there's a good movie beneath the surface, here.
It's based on a short story by Clive Barker, who also wrote the story that "Hellraiser" is based on. There's some Catholic imagery in the film, which is pretty much a standard when it comes to Clive Barker. And where Clive Barker's story takes place at a housing project in Liverpool, England, the movie version takes place in a housing project in Chicago, Illinois because the film's producers saw the parallels and thought "what if we set it at Cabrini-Green?" An insane idea on paper but it somehow worked! The movie looks absolutely fantastic on Blu-Ray and is a 2K restoration, which, as I've said, is packed with special features, not all of which I've even gotten the chance to take in, yet. The two sequels to this movie are pretty much garbage, so I can't recommend them. But if you like horror that makes you think, check this one out!
Highly recommended to all horror fans!
But for $10 that arrived 2 days later Im not complaining
ScreamFactory 2K Restoration looks fantastic as always and a lot of bonus features about the film with 2 versions to watch
Some say Candyman should be included with the 80s slashers (Freddy, Jason, Chucky, etc)
I dont think so
Candyman is a true horror film and the character should stands along side the Universal Legendarys (Dracula, Frankenstein, Imhotep, etc)
