What is there to say? I am not a wannabe movie critic like the rest of the commenters. The dvd worked as expected and played fine.

Really, really well done. Everything; acting, sets, costumes, very good!

This is truly an original cinematic experience. I have never seen such a personal and compelling film biography. It continues the legacy began by "Elizabeth I." Every moment was filled with such noble and human living. It simply astounds me that so many reviewers didn't realize that this was a Jungian study in the clash of a major archtype with the world in which she lived and ruled. This Elizabeth was superbly realized with none of the ticks of Bette Davis or the overt sexuality of Helen Mirren. Blanchett gave us a chance to see into the real Virgin Queen. This woman was not sexually frustrated, but in full control of her passions tempered with grace and personal integrity. She claimed her life and owned it with every fiber of her being. The supporting cast was perfect down to Tom Hollander as Mary Stuart's jailor. Samantha Morton gave an exquisite portrayal of a queen caught in the force of history. Clive Owen, as usual, was every inch the hero archtype.

If you have any sense of what it is to an individual in a heartless society, you will never get a moment to breathe, so mesmerizing is Kapur's direction and the simply balletic cinematography. Every costume is a statement of the character's feelings at every moment and the progression of color leads you to the ending that you know you're going to reach, but still can't is going to come to fruition.

In the decades to come, "Elizabeth-The Golden Age" will become the movie that the critics just didn't know how to approach. In this year of absolutely mediocre films (excepting "Michael Clayton")I cannot believe that this film was not on everybody's Top Ten List.

But then we as a film-going public do not appreciate the operatic, the sensuous, the heroic. We gravitate toward the bleak, violent worlds of the Coen Brothers and Clint Eastwood that foster hopelessness and alienation.

In the future, when critics are rediscovering "Elizabeth--The Golden Age," remember you heard it here first.

Amusing to read all the scholars of Elizabethan England opining on the various inaccuracies in this sequel to "Elizabeth." Anyone who watches commercial motion pictures for information about the past, beyond generalities and rough approximations of events, is bound to be disappointed. I recommend any of the marvelous biographies of Elizabeth I--my personal favorite is Anne Somerset's, though Alison Weir has also written an engaging history not only of England's remarkable queen, but also of the age--to anyone who is genuinely interested in the history of Elizabeth's England. Box office contingencies make it necessary for those who make and act in movies to subordinate truth to spectacle--so, best to accept this fact and allow yourself to be entertained without getting into a snit about the size of Westminster Abby or the career of Sir Walter Raleigh.

Having said this, I loved the film. Why? I could not take my eyes off of Cate Blanchette. Not only is she strikingly lovely, she has the sort of charisma that I associate with the greatest of movie actors--Katherine Hepburn and Glenda Jackson come to mind at once, as well as the incomparable Meryl Streep. Blanchette mesmerizes--her humanizing of Elizabeth feels just right: she shows us a vulnerable and (in many quarters) despised woman learning how to be not only be a great ruler, but also how to accept the costs of her fate.

I'm afraid that apart from Geoffrey Rush, Blanchette was ill-served by her supporting cast (Ralph Finnes was simply awful strutting through "Elizabeth" and the fellow who played Raleigh was mishandled by the director--he should not have been at the center of this film), but this lack of decent supporting performances mattered not one bit. The ending--the "Protestant WInd," which I would guess many viewers find exciting, felt contrived and anti-climactic, but then the film sags every moment that Blancette isn't the center of the action.

Blanchette is the film, and it is for her performance that I give it four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Très beau film
