“When I was in pharmacy school, I discovered that food has a profound impact on our healing and that what we put in our bodies will either heal us or make us sicker. In the same way that we use pharmaceuticals to impact our biology, we can use food as our medicine. I call this concept food pharmacology. Food is one of the most powerful tools in your healing journey.” - Dr. Izabella Wentz

About the Author

Dr. Izabella Wentz is one of the pioneering experts in lifestyle interventions for treating Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. She was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis in 2009. Trained as a pharmacist, Dr. Wentz was surprised at the lack of knowledge about lifestyle interventions for Hashimoto’s and autoimmune conditions, so decided to take on lifestyle interventions as a personal mission in an effort to help herself and others with the same condition. She self-published her first book, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis: Finding and Treating the Root Cause in 2013. She has since launched a thriving online community of more than 200K “Root Cause Rebels,” empowering those diagnosed with Hashimoto’s or thinking that they may have Hashimoto’s to take charge of their health and find solutions that work for them. Her popular programs include one-on-one health consultations, a widely-read email newsletter, a Hashimoto’s Institute geared towards physicians and other practitioners, a 12-week self care program, and many more. Izabella Wentz currently lives near Boulder, CO with her husband Michael and their dog Boomer.

A must-have book for anyone with Hashimoto;s

A must-have book for anyone with Hashimoto;s
I absolutely LOVE this book. Izabella does a fabulous job of explaining Hashimoto's and the principles and science that support her healing through nutrition approach. She explains the "why" behind the concepts she presents. I found the information in this book comprehensive and extremely helpful. It goes way beyond typical medical advice. As an integrative health coach and person with Hashimoto's, I know firsthand how powerful and life-changing this material is. Izabella takes a difficult subject and breaks it down into easy, manageable steps. I just started trying the healthy recipes and so far they are delicious. I am dairy and gluten-free and can eat all the recipes in this book - yay! The directions are simple and the photographs are beautiful. I can't wait to keep trying new ones. I am now recommending it to all my clients who have Hashimoto's as well as people with other autoimmune conditions.

This is a beautiful book to start with…the real value to me is that it has a very clear and simple guide to overhauling your kitchen for those of us who have autoimmune issues and MuST overhaul our diets completely. This has been an issue for me - having brain fog … trying to do this task has been overwhelming! Isabella has a link to her website that allows us to print out this task - and checkboxes as you go. It is the most straightforward assistance I’ve found. I’ve read in other reviews that her approach is not accessible to everyone - say the busy mom…too much prep and expensive ingredients. AcTually, there are substitutes for difficult ingredients, as well as a direct way to request any further suggestions you may need…email the source and her staff DoeS answer in a very timely fashion. As for it being too much work - it has to be done. It is an investment into a healthy, Happy future. The meal plan includes foods that the whole family will eat. You might be surprised at how much they too benefit from clean eating. My husband is a huge fan now.

Bottom line, a kitchen overhaul is something every expert I’ve read includes. This book gave me a straight forward map/guide that I just had to follow one step at a time and Voila! I did it! YeP, lots of good prep in my future. It’s a GReaT way to SaVe money and not have to think too hard. I just follow her meal plan until my brain is clear enough to where I can make my own menu again. Thank you Thyroid Pharmacist!

i own dr. wentz' other two books. she can be quite an information overload when you're first feeling out knowledge on hashimoto's but she is one of the best sources as well. the first part of the book is a condensed version of what you might find in her other two books while also diving more deeply into how your diet affects your autoimmune disease. the dialogue is approachable, and the author both personal and likeable.

as far as the recipes go, i've made five at this point: hot lemon water, spa water (do these count, lol!) truffled veggies, beef stew, and bibimbap bowls. all three FOOD recipes have been very successful for me, though i have to sub quite a few things due to my gut/food sensitivities. beef stew was bison stew; the meat in my bibimbap was bison meatballs as well, as i react to beef (and chicken, and fish!). i can't have garlic or onions so i leave those out as well as the avocado in the bibimbap. despite all that, everything has been a success and i just have to remind myself that i'm eating to heal right now. i hope some day soon i'll be able to reintroduce everything so i can have these recipes as they should be enjoyed. please don't hesitate to give this cookbook a try. everything is simple, straightforward, delicious, and doesn't require a ton of prep or cleanup. thank you, dr. wentz!

This is a really great book if you’ve just been diagnosed with Hashimotos, trying to learn more about the disease and how to cook with Hashimotos in mind. I’ve been diagnosed for over a year (& had suspicions I had it for several years before) and had worked closely with a thyroid specialist for 6 months. I was looking for something that wasn’t for beginners which this book is for those beginning their Hashimotos journey. Additionally, the recipes can easily be found online by searching Paleo or keto recipes. I even made up my own shepherds pie alternative, so the recipes didn’t really provide me with any new ideas that I’ve either already created on my own with the knowledge I’ve learned over the years or have found when googling keto/paleo recipes.

You don't need to have Hashimoto's to benefit from this book. Most of the nutritional guidance and recipes are appropriate for anyone who wants to control ANY autoimmunity or just plain optimize health. I love that most of the recipes do not take a lot of preparation, and even those of us with fatigue should not find them daunting. For example, Creamy White Chicken Stew is essentially four simple steps: briefly precook a few items in oil, add ingredients and boil, add more ingredients and simmer until done. There is only one step for Bigos (Polish Hunter's Stew): "Place all ingredients in a slow cooker, mix, and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours." I also love that many of the recipes are accompanied by a beautiful photo of the finished dish; honestly, this is what draws me to a particular recipe. As someone with a lot of food sensitivities, I am delighted that this cookbook magically contains more recipes without any offending ingredients than any other cookbook I own. Dr. Wentz puts her heart and soul into everything she does, and this book is no different. Her passion shines through.

I rarely write a review. In the past I have tried various diets and their cookbooks in hopes of improving my health. The recipes in those books were disappointing; the photos looked good but the actual food….not so much. Then I stumbled on to Izabella’s Hashimoto Protocol book and this cookbook. There is only one recipe that didn’t turn out for me but the majority of these taste great! Having something that tastes good sure makes a big change in diet easier. I’m a huge fan of Izabella’s books, Facebook and Instagram as well as her Rootcology line because they are life changing. Take a chance and buy this book!
