Product Description

Though the anti-war sentiments of Hamburger Hill come through loud and clear, the film is squarely on the side of those courageous, much-maligned Americans who fought and died in Vietnam. Based on a true incident, the story takes place in 1969, as the 101st Airborne Division confronts the Vietcong in a bloody battle over Hill 937 (aka "Hamburger Hill") in the Ashua Valley. During the next 10 days, both sides incur heavy losses, but the Cong refuse to surrender the hill. The ultimate American "victory" turns out to be a hollow one indeed. Scripted by Vietnam war vet Jim Carabatsos, Hamburger Hill not only underlines the futility of the war but also the pressures brought to bear upon the troops by an insensitive, often hostile media. By utilizing a cast of unknowns, director Jim Irvin deftly avoids the Hollywoodized slickness of such bigger-budgeted efforts as Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter.

WAR's like all WAR's are stupid and senseless.
The Old men send Young Men and Women to fight and die for...well, you know.
This series of engagements shows the futility of WAR.
A nothing hill amongst a series of nothing hills we just gave back watered with the Blood
of OUR Hero's.
Fighting and Dying for EACHOTHER.
Not some Politician 10,000 miles away.

Directed very well! Movie pulls you in to what war is really like!!!!

A really powerful and gritty war film, especially for the early time in which it was made. I don't mind the "N" word when used for comradre, which it's used here for...But the amount the white soldiers use it negatively is a bit off-putting. Still, I guess it's just staying "true to the time." Once the white soldiers see how brave and upfront the black soldiers are, it dies off almost entirely. I do believe this was the first large-scale attack that negro soldiers were permitted within, and they more than proved their bravery. The final war sequence will leave you in tears. Ranks up there with "Saving Private Ryan."

I remember the first time seeing this movie in 1987 as being emotionally draining. My copy of the VHS version had been played many times and still had the same affect on me. This Blu-ray disc version exceeded my expectations. While watching it I felt as though I was there in the middle of the action. The fine acting, high definition visuals and DTS HD sound enabled me to vicariously experience each emotion, comradeship, gun shot, bomb blast, air craft flying over and injury. I got to know and care for not only the men of Bravo Company, but also for the people of the village. This graphic, gritty, raw and realistic film portrayal of one of many Viet Nam War stories still remains one of the best. The special feature "Hamburger Hill: The Appearance Of Reality" increased my appreciation for the extreme measures taken to make this film. The documentary "Medic In Vietnam" increased my understanding of the importance of medics to soldiers in any situation.

This lesser of the known Vietnam movies is without a doubt the best. It does not stylize, glamorize to make itself stand out. This movie is about the loss of our Heroes and how they sacrificed themselves for their fellow soldiers. They charge up the hill again and again with many of the characters being killed in the process of course knowing full well the futility of it all. It becomes a matter of pride and gets up close nasty and personal. All of the acting is superb. I still do not know how this movie gets overlooked.

The amazing thing about this movie is how REALISTIC the camaraderie between soldiers actually feels.

I bought the Italian Region B (i have a player) because I suppose the powers that be do not think its worth the transfer.

I total pity. If you get a chance to see this movie do so.

Awesome movie that has a very realistic, documentary style. Could have beneffitted from a better musical score, not cheesy synth music that's glaringly out of place in the couple of battle scenes in which it is used. No score at all would been better and would have heightened the gritty, documentary feel of this movie, which makes stunning use of napalm and phosphorus ordnance special effects.

5.0 out of 5 stars A overlooked classic.
Reviewed in Canada on November 8, 2023
Why this movie is so overlooked compare to the other Vietnam classics is hard to figure out, it’s a very anti-war movie, that appears to at least feature the budget of others like Platoon and Full Metal Jacket. The characters may have slightly less depth, but they have their great moments that bring it all together and the reality of the situation, including the radio voice message from one soldiers girlfriend, the monologue of an officer, and the loss of many a comrade in the struggle for the hill. It’s will filmed and well written, there’s cliches more notably in the beginning, but you have to take into account the year this was made. The battle scenes are brutal and violent, every bit equal to Platoon, and offset by the down time between actions that the men’s emotions steal the show. The racial differences of the time are also highlighted, and overall it all ties together very well into an instant classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars „Hamburger Hill“ – der Vietnamkrieg - Klassiker „Uncut“ und in sehr guter Qualität!
Reviewed in Germany on May 3, 2021
Die Story von „Hamburger Hill“ aus dem Jahr 1987 von Regisseur John Irvin („Die Hunde des Krieges“, „Der City Hai“) ist eng angelehnt an die Schlacht am Hamburger Hill vom 10. bis 20. Mai 1969.
