Quantitative Medicine: Using Targeted Exercise and Diet to Reverse Aging and Chronic Disease Kindle Edition

Targeted Exercise and Diet Reverse Aging and Chronic Disease___
A broad claim, but it works, proven in 20 years of clinical practice. Here's how. Using ordinary blood tests, an optimum exercise and nutritional strategy is developed. Once achieved, aging is slowed, and biological age reversed. Chronic diseases like osteoarthritis, atherosclerosis, adult onset diabetes, and osteoporosis are blocked and rolled back. The best lifestyle is different for everyone, but for most it involves a delicious diet and short but intense exercise sessions. Here are brief descriptions of how
Quantitative Medicine slows aging and reverses disease.

Osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is almost always reversible and curable, often within weeks using simple, but very specific home exercises. A step-by-step guide is provided.

Aging. Biological aging (your effective age) is actually reversed. Aging is largely due to cellular inefficiencies and the slowing of overall body repair. By adopting a lifestyle that drives internal processes to their optimum, these aging processes are significantly slowed, and in many cases, actually reversed.

Heart Disease. Heart disease, or arteriosclerosis, is due to several problems. First, a sedentary lifestyle will cause regions of very low blood flow to develop in the arteries. This, like stagnant water, is a breeding ground for problems. Intense exercise disrupts this and flushes the arteries clean. Second, exercise and proper diet cause the liver to generate an army of "good" cholesterol particles: HDL. These particles are designed to mop up atherosclerotic plaque. Done properly, these two mechanisms will stop and slowly reverse heart disease.

Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is caused by loss of minerals in the bone. Calcium supplements slow this down, but have serious other side effects. However, there is one methodology that will cause bone to actually grow, and to gain density and strength, literally reversing osteoporosis. This involves exercises that stresses the larger bones. When bones undergo this challenge, they sent chemical signals that draw in the strength-giving minerals. This works well and successfully reversed osteoporosis in over 90% of Dr. Nichols clinical practice. And it works fast too—just a few months.

Adult Onset Diabetes. Adult Onset Diabetes is defined as excess circulating sugar. The cause of this could be a weakening of the body's ability to metabolize that sugar (often called insulin resistance), or simply a case of way too much sugar or starch in the diet. (As far as the body is concerned, starch—cereals, breads, and grains—is almost 100% sugar.) The cure is simple. Cut down on sugar and starch till the circulating blood sugar returns to a healthy level. For some. this may be almost complete abstinence from sugar and starch, others can enjoy some. The blood tests clearly point this out. If the Quantitative Medicine exercises are concurrently undertaken, the cure succeeds in as little as three months. It diet alone is modified, it may take more like six. This is only a cure in the sense that the disease symptoms and its horrible consequences are gone. If the regime is abandoned, the diabetes will return.

Quantitative Medicine Is a Complete Healthcare System___

The methodologies and protocols needed to successfully perform the anti-aging and disease reversals are completely described in a step-by-step fashion. This book guides you in assessing your own health using simple blood tests, and based on those results, recommends lifestyle changes that will cause optimum health be attained. Once accomplished, aging is slowed and degenerative diseases prevented and in many cases reversed. But the book goes further, explaining in easy-to-understand detail both how and why these methods work.

Quantitative Medicine named 2016 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards Finalist
From Kirkus Reviews--

An ambitious book presents a revolutionary approach to fitness, diet, and exercise.

This volume seeks to reimagine medicine in the attempt to emphasize a preventive patient strategy that can combat degenerative, chronic disease and prolong life. Ever the iconoclasts, Nichols (Eat Real Food Or Else, 2016), a medical innovator, and his patient, Davis, a Stanford-educated engineer, provide an argument that debunks many popular medical myths that have led people who seek a healthy lifestyle astray. Eating whole grains, avoiding fats, going for long-distance runs--these and other commonly held presumptions about how to promote and maintain wellness the authors attack with lucidity and vigor. The hypothalamus, the body's "master regulator" of the key physiological processes that govern health, acts as if humans still lived as hunter-gatherers seeking to enhance their survival. This accounts for why some people who do extended aerobic exercise actually gain weight. The hypothalamus thinks the body needs to store fats to meet the demands of these long periods of physical stress. "The agricultural revolution had the net effect of pushing our hypothalamus out of its normal equilibrium, and into a place where it could no longer regulate and operate properly," the authors argue. Consumption of starches, even whole grains, has messed up humans. To understand how the hypothalamus, and consequently lipids (fats), sugars, and other nutrients function, the patient must order tests outside the current regime permitted by health insurance companies and physicians. The authors encourage patients to join forces with their doctors to explain and engage the rather elaborate health strategies that they advocate. Written in a clear, straightforward manner, the book still features an argumentative edge, and why not? Nichols and Davis take on many false medical saws with an enthusiasm and thoroughness that provides strong scientific evidence for their discussion. The convincing book also displays a number of cartoon drawings and sidebars that attempt to lighten the load. Would that all patients had a Dr. Mike in their corners.

An intensely, deeply argued recasting of what it means to be healthy that may pose difficulties for patients, but provides solid evidence for effective prevention strategies.

From the Author

I am a Silicon Valley engineer and longtime Dr. Mike patient, but unlike most engineers, I enjoy writing, and when the opportunity arose to chronicle the medical wizardry of Dr. Mike Nichols, I jumped at the chance. The result is Quantitative Medicine.

This is a great book, I practiced the diet and high intensity exercise in this book and within 6 weeks I was able to get off my blood pressure and cholesterol medicine, which I was on for 9 years and despite working out religiously weight training hard (powerlifting) 3 times a week and running, I could not get off the meds. I have always been in very good shape, I was just carrying too much muscle and the fat that comes with it for my body. I thought my high cholesterol and blood pressure and borderline diabetes was a heredity problem, until I read this book. I did not realize it was almost 100% diet. Now my HDL is 83 (previous was 66) and my Triglycerides is 36 (previous was 54) and my glucose is 81 which is down from 100. I lost 15 pounds and it was easy (down to 190 from 205). Previously, I had struggled to get from 210 to 205, I was alway hungry. Now it is much easier to maintain 190 and I am not hungry. Book teaches you what foods to eat so you eat smarter, without having to sacrifice too much. I cut out milk which I love, however, substituted with Almond and Coconut milk. I also, cut out the grains, no bread or cereals, however, I do eat hamburgers in a restaurant with bread at least once a week, however, have hamburgers at home with lettuce wraps (I love hamburgers and french fries so I cheat a bit, but no ill effects). I have been holding my weight at about 190 plus-minus a couple of pounds for over 4 months now. I also bought the Concept 2 rowing machine as recommended in the book (best investment I have ever made), at 54 years old running was beating my body up. Now all I do is row for 30 second sprints with 30 second rest for only 5 sets, 3 times a week that is only 2.5 minutes of working out and with the rest it only takes 4.5 minutes, however, it is very intense and it never gets easy, it is a real killer. Even though the rowing is only anaerobic it does have a significant carry over to aerobic running, I run about once a month and my running times have improved in a 5K, that really is incredible, the book said it would work, I had my doubts, but it does work. Running twice a week for 3 months my 5K time was 24:52 (May 2017) after training on the rowing machine for 5 months and running about once a month, my 5K time on the same course was 24:20 (Oct 2017). If I had not done the work myself, I would not believe you could do so much less with rowing but get so much more without the wear and tear on the body that running will do. Even though my running muscles are not in shape and are inefficient, my heart stanima is so much more improved that I can run faster. I highly recommend this book, it will change your life and possibly save it.

Fascinating book full of excellent advice which is often very different from what your doctor will tell you. The way he explains it is very clear and understandable and makes perfect sense. There are a couple of other doctors out there who have written books sharing some of the same contrarian advice. This book goes into much greater detail and also offers information of how to get started, how to save money on testing, etc.

Full disclosure that I have been a patient of Dr. Nichols for two years and have been very intentional about following these guidelines - nutrition, exercise, mobility, and medical, and have seen the data and results first hand. I've been anxiously awaiting this book, both because I wanted to learn more about the underlying science, and also because so many people have asked me about the program, and this book does a much better job of explaining than I can. I have already shared with several friends and family members. Please share with those you care about.

Excellent book, very scientific, well written and clear. However I did not opt for his full system of taking a multitude of tests to judge where I am health-wise. Still, I think the information can be very useful to me in dealing effectively with my current level of hip joint deterioration by understanding various tests and helping me to talk more intelligently with my doctor. Still, I am continuing my research into finding alternative solutions, i.e. cures, for my ailments. I am not happy with pharmaceutical solutions that seem to be geared to permanently addicting you to their expensive, and often ineffective not to mention dangerous, drug "solutions".

Thorough knowledge on human evolution based on diets with seldom meats and fats for last 2.5 million years. And still find ways to achieve optimum health and disease free life.

Although i am a vegetarian, I am always interested in alternative points of view in other types of general nutritional and health oriented books even if they don't specifically follow vegetarian to vegan dietary guides, and based on the good reviews and the good fortune of having an unused 'coupon' which reduced the price of the book to about $5bucks, and made it worth the risk.

Although I found the idea of the book interesting, the information was not always clearly organised, so it comes off a bit more disjointed than science-y. I think this is a book that will mainly benefit those who truly enjoy their meats or follow Paleo, but I also think that you will be able to find other books that are more difinitively informative and more clearly/better organized, for the money or less money.. So, unless you get it on-sale for under $1dollar, I just don't think it's worth the investment.

Overall, it's an okay book, but definitely Not life changing material or information.

"Quantitative Medicine" offers a lifestyle approach that will make you feel better, look better, and improve your overall health. The diet, which consist of mostly micro nutrient dense living foods and regular high intensity exercise is the key. The book has become my bible for a healthier life.

4.0 out of 5 stars All MDs should read this book...I only wish I could find one in Toronto on par with Dr Nichols!

This is a enjoyable comprehensive read. I really enjoyed reading this book. Especially the excellent readability of the biology in the latter detailed sections of the book. I picked alot of additional knowledge that wasn't found in any other nutrition book I've read to date and one of the best overall best nutrition books I've read. Too bad the author didn't introduce nutrigenomics and more individuality.. Also, the author should be aware of different uses of heart rate variability training and clarifying that in this book, perhaps the author is unaware. Now where do I find such a MD like this one in Toronto???.
