Product Description
Charles Bronson dares you to cross this line! Screen favorite Charles Bronson stars as Jeb Maynard, a tough-as-nails US Border Patrol officer stationed between San Diego and Tijuana. When his best friend and partner (Wilford Brimley) is murdered by a notorious smuggler of illegal immigrants known as "The Marine," Maynard begins a relentless manhunt to bring stability to the border and justice for his fallen comrade. Co-starring Ed Harris (Pollock) as the brainy, ruthless smuggler who is seemingly always one step ahead of Maynard, and Bruno Kirby (City Slickers) as a rookie officer drawn to Maynard's crusade, Borderline is a taut thriller that true Bronson fans will love.

of his movies. Borderline is a story about the border between the
United States and Mexico. It involves drugs, sex, and smuggling
among other things that occur illegally crossing the border. Murder
is what causes Charles Bronson to get involved to bring the culprit
to justice. This movie is quite relevant today, as a matter of fact,
even more so. If you're interested in what is happening at the
border today I believe this video is right up your alley.
Charles Bronson is well cast as a US Border Patrol officer who is trying to solve the murder of one of his officers, who is killed while investigating human trafficking of illegal aliens near the Mexican border. Bronson's character is not a superhero or a wisecracking 80s tough guy; he's just a decent low-salary cop with a sense of justice and morality who has to deal with the problem largely on his own due to a lack of support from the FBI, who do not understand the situation at the border. Bronson and his young partner are focusing on the human smugglers, while having empathy towards the actual aliens, most of whom are being exploited and many of whom are abused women and children.
There is some average acting but also some good acting, particularly by Bronson and a young Ed Harris. And now, in 2021, the film is once again as relevant as it was 40 years ago.
"Borderline," released in 1980, is sort of on the border between his '70s movies and his '80s movies. It's not really on par with the best of his '70s movies. But it's not as formulaic and cheap-looking as the cop/vigilante movies that he churned out in the '80s.
In "Borderline" Bronson plays a Border Patrol Officer working the daily grind of picking up illegal immigrants crossing the border from Mexico. The movie does a fairly good job of presenting the work of the Border Patrol realistically. The movie also treats the immigrants sympathetically, depicting the smugglers who bring them across the border--to take low-paying jobs where the immigrants are often exploited--as the true villains.
Ed Harris, in one of his first screen appearances, plays one of these smugglers--a particularly cold and violent ex-Marine. When one of the smuggling operations starts to go wrong, he kills a Border Patrol officer and one of the immigrants who just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The bulk of the movie is Bronson investigating the killings, and trying to track down Harris. And this is where the movie bogs down into a lot of tedious investigating. It begins to feel like you're watching an extended episode of a not too exciting '70s TV show. When you finally get to the climactic confrontation between Bronson and Harris it's a perfunctory shoot-out, hardly worth the wait.
Overall the movie is a missed opportunity. It's trying to be a film that addresses serious issues and to be a satisfying action film, but isn't up to the task and ends up not being successful as either.
The DVD is serviceable, with no extra features. One nice thing is the packaging, with includes photos of Bronson and Harris on the reverse side of the cover. When you open the cover to the jewel case, you get a nice still of Bronson, with gun drawn in the classic two-handed firing stance. On the opposite side is a still of Harris looking equally lethal.
Not quite enough to whole-heartedly recommend the DVD. But pretty cool looking.
