Product Description

Screen favorites Gregory Peck (TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD) and Christopher Plummer (THE SOUND OF MUSIC) star in THE SCARLET AND THE BLACK, a riveting World War II drama based on a true story of moral courage. In Nazi-occupied Rome, Vatican official Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty (Peck) wages a secret campaign against the Third Reich. Using his influence and position, he takes part in the efforts to rescue Allied refugees from imprisonment by the Gestapo. O'Flaherty's efforts soon cause him to become a target of an investigation by the SS, led by Colonel Kappler (Plummer). The Monsignor's diplomatic status affords him some protection, but the relentless German Colonel will stop at nothing to halt O'Flaherty's endeavors-permanently. Also starring Sir John Gielgud, Barbara Bouchet, and Raf Vallone, THE SCARLET AND THE BLACK is an unforgettable and inspiring tale. Nominated for three Primetime Emmy awards.

Living in America it is very easy to forget how much was done by so many people to save our pilots and others who were hunted by the Nazis. Everyone who helped should be honored, like those shown in this film.

I first saw this masterpiece when I was a child. I recently revisited it, worried that it wouldn't hold up. It was the best movie I saw that year. By far.
The depiction of the Nazis and their lies, cruelty, and evil is always the easiest part. What this film does is depict their human side and the sad, deluded nature of their position.

This film offers humor in the face of abject evil, defiant ingenuity outsmarting the Nazis, a touch of romance, unstoppable courage, and so much more. It is perhaps my favorite movie of all time.

Severely underrated! Would Recommend to the Highest degree. 10 out of 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Don't judge a book by its cover"
Reviewed in Canada on December 13, 2021
This is a fine film with an important message. Perhaps slightly slow by today's standards but it stars terrific actors from a lost generation of film set to great music and is of good production values, especially for what was a CBS made-for-TV movie. I am reviewing the movie itself which I have seen, and not the actual video and audio quality presented here on the DVD which I have not seen. Other reviews note poor video quality and audio syncing, but they appear to refer to a previous release of the title given those reviews were posted prior to when this particular copy of the film was released. The cover art also looks a lot better in the DVD case than as an Amazon image, not that it matters.

The DVD arrived in good time and was safely wrapped. The film is based on a true story which makes it all the more interesting and watchable. I would recommend it.
