4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 391 ratings

"Written with Patricia McConnell and Karen London's extensive knowledge of both theory and practicality, (not to mention their sense of humor), it provides clear and workable ideas to make living with a pack of dogs fun and fulfilling. This is a great resource if you're looking for some dog training tips to create a little order out of the canine chaos in your home, or wondering how in the world you'll manage the entire pack for a walk around the neighborhood. Perhaps you're concerned that there is tension between two of the dogs in your pack or whether your dog's play might escalate into aggression. This expanded and updated booklet has the answers to those questions and many more. Written to help you maximize the joy of living in a multi-dog household, it emphasizes the use of ethology and positive training methods to teach your dogs to be polite and patient instead of demanding and pushy. Filled with practical ideas about keeping life fun in houses that have two dogs or many more than that, Feeling Outnumbered is a great resource for all multiple dog owners whether novice or professional."

After reading this book by Patricia McConnell and listening to some of her teachings on YouTube, I am so impressed by her natural intellect concerning animal behavior and her true devotion to animals . You can appreciate her prowess in solving real life dog problems with techniques that are completely reasonable. She explains her methods and rationale in a very understandable way. At the same time, she brings a new level of expertise to light. She has so much experience and some great stories mixed in with her advice. She's a true dog behavior genius. I highly recommend.

Just made a first pass, two days after (yeah I know) having adopted a second Great Pyrenees. I'd been doing something like body-blocking I think instinctively with our first Pyr, but she's a 3 or 4 y/o, and apparently much quicker to read human body language than our new almost-2 y/o puppy. He's been in and out of a couple different fosters, and his adoption attempts seem to have ended abruptly upon problems with barking in the house and being un-walkable on the leash. So we don't think this kind of thing was tried on him before? Maybe?

We were prepared for a couple weeks of adoption stress. (Our first one was rescued out of Korea, with a stab wound in her back, sooooo...yeah we were ready.) But the barking was really getting to both of us, and we were starting to get worried about integrating him successfully with our first pooch, who doesn't bark at all (except in the case of 'porch invaders'). And yes, we are now incredibly appreciative that our first go around was with a dog mentally strong enough to save the barking for special occasions!

Anyway we started calmly body-blocking with him just this morning whenever he bolted barking at the door... and it's been four hours of people talking outside, dogs barking across the street, and motorcycles on a holiday weekend--in complete, serene silence. Our first dog has been even more deliriously happy than usual now that I've been able to be that much more consistent with her. There are a LOT of good, basic, practical suggestions in this book, and I can't wait to start working on them--and I imagine they'll have less immediate results--but this one technique is worth the weight of this book in GOLD.

I know some people have not found this booklet helpful, especially if they have already had multiple dogs in their homes before. But we are getting ready to add a second dog to our household for the first time, and this booklet really has helped us be better prepared to hit the ground running. We are looking forward to having a second dog more than ever now that we have some good ideas on how to introduce them successfully, how to feed them, how to let them play (and break them apart if needed), and how to show our love for them both. Thank you, Patricia, for breaking down this process into small, understandable segments. We will refer back to this booklet many times over the next few months, I'm sure. Well worth the purchase if you are new to the multi-dog household like we are.

This is a very brief overlook on the "how to's" of running a multiple dog household. The concepts are very workable, time consuming, and take a lot of patience and practice, one-on-one, with each dog. After that you gradually add in another dog after each dog has "mastered" the command you are working on. There are several resources listed at the end of the book that I have found to be helpful as I live in a four dog household, and am having problems with dominance issues between two of my younger male dogs. I would highly recommend this book as an easy read and first stepping stone to dealing with a chaotic household. Mine are now all lying in their "places," relaxed and, best of all QUIET!!!

Definitely helped me to figure out some body language and CONTROL my FOUR dogs. A behavioral trainer suggested I buy this and it was well worth it. A great book for information on how to avoid conflict between two or more dogs.
You have to start putting your mind in theirs and it helps you to understand how they think and what makes them react the way they do in certain situations. Highly recommend this book.

The book seemed pretty good and had some good pointers on appropriate dog play. however I wish it went a little more in depth about appropriate kinds of relationships between dogs and beginning warning signs that things aren't ok. Also what to do when you see these signs. I, personally, would also have like information about two puppies raised together, but I know that is a rare case.

I have 3 dogs, 2 of which were getting into shuffles a lot, and one who had been SO BEHAVED before adding the third. This book is really short, but had quick tips and some great paradigm shift that have fundamentally changed my approach to my pack. No fighting in WEEKS, and my little rebel can be trusted off leash again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful in a difficult situation
Reviewed in Canada on April 18, 2020
After adopting a rescued Livestock Guard Dog (Pyrenees mix or Akbash, not sure which), I was having to deal with a lot of fights between her and my male Pyrenees. These are big dogs, and their fighting is quite ferocious even if they're not actually hurting each other, so this was pretty nerve-wracking. This book provided very helpful advice in a calm, reassuring tone. I recommend it to anyone who's introducing a new dog into a household where there is already a Dog In Residence.

Of course, you need how to read English. Non so se sia disponibile una edizione in italiano.

5.0 out of 5 stars The bits they don't cover in a training class
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 18, 2014
Whilst an experienced dog owner, I've never had a pack before. Searching for help with some "issues" with my 3 dogs I found this and it covers all those bits taking one dog on its own to class doesn't. I have also abandoned guilt about doing different things with individual dogs and feel better in myself. Great advice on splitting dogs up, training them alone and together - what other book covers walking out with more than on dog on a lead or stopping a dog fight? I know it's all common sense and I do a lot of it already but this book was a great help at a time of difficulty. Short chapters, no fancy training systems, no high and mighty words, just good advice in our language. I even excused the fact it was American!! Do use it with additional advice from a trainer you trust and respect like I did and you will be set up to relax and enjoy your dogs.
