I read this book about 10 years ago and was very impressed with the detailed coverage of all relevent concepts. I designed asset allocation based on this book which was well diversified over everything as this book emphasizes. i.e. Large, small ,micro cap stocks (mostly US and to smaller extent international). REITs, Emerging markets etc according to suggested allocation for the kind of risk. Bottom line is Most variety of stocks have not worked as well as S&P 500 (large/growth/big techs) in the last 10 years. Small stocks, micro caps, all variety of international stocks have very poorly performed. And so a diversified portfolio which sounds very good on paper has terribly under performed the SP 500 over the last 10 years or so. Significant percentage of under performance. Close to 5% or 6% instead of 10% to 12% for SP 500. Can't blame the author completely but results over 10 years speak for themselves. And anybody who followed this book must have experienced similar poor results in my opinion. Just my 2 cents!! I am very very disappointed. I didnot invest in bonds or it would have been even worse. Read the book but do not follow it blindly. Good Luck!!

This is one of the best books I have ever read to get me started on a long-term investment plan. The material is presented very logically with charts and graphs to explain various financial concepts and practices. I was very reluctant to pay a financial manager a fixed percentage to manage my portfolio. I learned that the most difficult step was to determine your asset allocations, then stick to your plan when the bears and bulls are having their fun. I especially appreciated the sample portfolio asset allocations that could be used at different stages of your life. I now understand the importance of index funds and diversification within and across assets. The bottom line: I now believe that with this book and a few other resource references I have the tools I need to develop and implement my own long-term investment plan and do not have to rely on and pay a financial advisor.

If you are just starting out like me, and want to learn how investing actually works, this book is a great place to start. It helped me get on the road to making informed decisions about how to set up my 401(k), evaluate financial advice, and make sure my parent's retirement was on track. It has chapters on each type of investment, like stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, real estate, etc. The main topic of the book is, of course, asset allocation, which turns out to be one of the most important things you need to know about investing.

I spent some time searching Amazon for good books to start learning about finances. My initial research returned other books that were very, very, introductory level, and focused on things like "how to make a budget" or "why you should save money every month". While these types of titles are surely of use for the absolute beginner, they are somewhat lacking for people with the goal of understanding how to put their money to work saving for the future.

The book is an easy read. I found it so helpful I searched Amazon for the author, Rick Ferri, and picked up some of his other titles as well. Highly recommended.

I have to say that I enjoyed and better yet, learned a lot while reading this book. Even though this version is a bit outdated, the principles explained are obviously still valid! Full of examples and evidence to explain concepts. I manage my own portfolio and this book helped me to settle my investment strategy and set my asset allocation. Thanks!

In hindsight, the book provides a good rundown of the asset classes and practices of investing. I took one star off for a dry tone that made the book hard to read at times, and another for failure to acknowledge that traditional, bookish definitions of the terms may no longer apply over time.

Example would be always considering bonds a safer investment that stock: these days, people ask “if you don’t want to own the company, why would you lend money to it?” and bonds of troubled companies change their rating overnight.

Overall, the book makes statements as if there were hard science backing them, whereas everything in it is just observations and human opinions. Failure to acknowledge the transient nature of market “laws” is my largest criticism of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Libro fondamentale per costruire un portafoglio d'investimento diversificato
Reviewed in Italy on October 5, 2020
