4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 206 ratings

The ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy has generated a flurry of interest in how medical professionals really make it through one of the most rigorous educational programs around, but how much of the medical drama seen in Grey’s Anatomy is pure entertainment, and how much is an accurate reflection of life both in and out of the OR?

In
The Real Grey's Anatomy, a well-known medical journalist provides some answers. He examines a group of new surgical residents at a major teaching hospital in the Pacific Northwest as they tackle the roller-coaster ride of long hours, fascinating procedures, mundane office tasks, and emotional ups and downs that comprise the life of a student of surgery.

From Publishers Weekly

The overachievers on the hit TV show Grey's Anatomy stand on the shoulders of M.D.s from decades of medical dramas. But health journalist Holtz finds more than a kernel of truth in the ABC white-coat soaper and notes, [O]ur attitudes and beliefs about surgery and medicine shift and adapt unconsciously while we take in the fiction from Seattle Grace Hospital. What unfolds in the book is a Cliff's Notes for surgical residents: the grueling hours—a max of 80 a week; the weird operating flukes—a flame bizarrely ignites from the gas in a surgery patient's gut; the need to give good care even to bad people. The anecdotes, however, seem as likely to come from Grey's as from real life. On the struggle in treating ailing criminals, one resident confides, I don't feel like my care was compromised by being aware that he was a criminal, but it definitely made me think about it. There's little new in these tales from the sick ward, but Holtz gives them all a Hollywood glow. (Jan.)

A GREAT COMPANION GUIDE TO THE HIT MEDICAL DRAMA GREY'S ANATOMY
An excellent behind-the-scene companion book the television medical drama Grey's Anatomy. The interviews with actual interns, medical doctors and medical student were very rewarding and insightful to me. I am using this reference book as part of my research material for my upcoming romance trilogy: BEWTICHED UNTIL DAWN, BOTHERED BY DAYLIGHT and BEWILDERED BENEATH THE STARS.

Great book. It really had a lot of new information on surgeon's lives that you just don't get from Grey's anatomy. One particularly memorable part in the book was the part where they explained that surgeons cannot influence anyone to donate organs to help a patient that the surgeon has. That made the healthcare system seem more trustworthy, like they truly have all of the patient's best interests in mind.

This book is what got my interest in Medical thrillers, crimes, and fiction. I love the show Grey's Anatomy and Andrew Holtz did a brilliant job on telling the real events with the fiction events. As much I appreciate our doctors and nurses that work so hard to save life's, this book tells the stories of what I think could be the real deal about what really goes on in the ER.

Andew Holtz also tells how the intern go through rigorous educational program and still try to have a personal life. I would recommend this book to people who love Grey's Anatomy the show and also to people who are interested on become doctors. It's educational, funny, and entertaining.

How much of the medical drama depicted in Grey’s Anatomy is pure entertainment? How much of the drama is an accurate reflection of life both in and out of the operating room? In this book, author Andrew Holtz provides some insight. Holtz invites the readers to join him on his journey shadowing real surgical residents practicing in a hospital in the Pacific Northwest as they tackle the roller-coaster ride of residency. The Real Grey’s Anatomy offers a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of real surgical residents, versus the lives of those depicted in the long- running television series Grey’s Anatomy.
Andrew Holtz is a well-known medical journalist, former CNN medical correspondent, as well as co anchor for Your Health. He earned a master’s degree in public health, and received his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University. He is now a board member and past president of the Association of Health Care Journalists. Therefore, Holtz is not unfamiliar with medicine. As a viewer of the popular show, Holtz was very much aware that most of the happenings on it were overdramatized. He then wanted to conduct further research, and reached out to a hospital in Oregon called the Oregon Health and Science University to ask if he could shadow some of their practicing residents.
The book does not provide all the answers to questions raised by the popular series, but rather just a closer look into how the show translates into the real world. “That’s what this book is about: the crucible that is surgery residency… and how it shapes the lives of the people within it” (2). Holtz explains that viewers don’t watch Grey’s Anatomy for the surgery, they want a good story with interesting characters. He then goes on to explain the possible fascination with the popular show; “And so, as our eyes soak up the scenes of Grey’s Anatomy cast in shades of blue scrubs and white coats, grayscale imaging scans, and brilliant OR lights and as our imaginations connect with the emotional heart of the stories, our attitudes and beliefs about surgery and medicine shift and adapt unconsciously” (3).
There is so much helpful information in the book, such as how the residents are trained to handle talking to a patients family after their passing, as well as cultural beliefs. As a dedicated and devoted viewer of Grey’s Anatomy, this book had some interesting points and perspectives on the different dramatizations depicted in the show.
As a student studying how the aspects of Grey’s Anatomy translate to the real world, I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in discovering more about what actually happens on the floor of a hospital, and not on a hospital set. Whether the book ends up in the hands of a medical student wanted to know more about what they are going into, or a curious reader looking for books to read about their favorite television show, this book is an amazing addition to a collection.

I bought this for my teenager who wants to be a doctor, and she LOVES it! Considering she doesn't typically like reading outside of school and assigned reading, that says a lot!

I loved the book, in general. The only issue was that the book was listed as being new and it definitely wasn't, especially for the price.

dies ist ein Einblick in die seltsame Welt der Medizin und Mediziner, der die Fernsehserie zum albernen nervigen Witz macht.
Ich wünschte, daß etwas dermaßen realistisches verfilmt würde.
