Product Description

Product Description

A dishonest used car saleman is caught and must return money to customers, with some surprising results.

Amazon.com

Flywheel is the first film from the creators of Facing the Giants and Fireproof. Used car salesman Jay Austin (writer/director Alex Kendrick) swindles his customers and teaches his assistant salesmen to do the same--but despite the profits, something gnaws at him. When he realizes that his own son doesn't respect him, Austin has a conversion and accepts God into his life. This would be the end of most spiritual stories, but Flywheel finds a warm comedy in the obstacles on the path of righteousness; Austin discovers that being right with God means grappling every day with what it means to be honest. Though the filmmaking is raw (the editing is often clumsy and the cinematography is flat), the story is well-paced, has a gently ironic sense of humor, and Kendrick's central performance is compelling. Kendrick is just as persuasive as a man struggling to emerge from a joyless life as he is when he's rediscovered his faith but finds it constantly tested. Though Flywheel is forthright about its Christian inspiration, the story is about actually living a moral life, not about abstract spiritual truths. The result is a movie that looks towards heaven, but has its feet on the earth. --Bret Fetzer

Terrible movie for such promising actors. Very disappointing. Didn't play well and wasn't picked up. I need a return label for it and a box or envelope to put it in. I can print the label no problem.

Flywheel (Director's Cut)

Imagine a used car salesman who has just ripped off his own pastor by selling him a car at a hugely inflated price. When the sale is done the pastor turns and says "I'd like to pray for you and thank God for how you've treated me today" Then he prays, "Father I ask that you bless and treat my friend here just as he has treated me today."

This idea inspired the Kendrick brothers to create the engaging and heart warming story called "Flywheel". It is a story of redemption, perseverance and making things right after contributing to a mountain of wrong. The Kendrick's cleverly but authentically make God a central player in the events that unfold in the life of our embattled used car lot owner, Jay Austin.

Austin's focus on getting ahead moves him to trample on anyone who gets in his way, including his wife and son. When he realizes he's about to lose it all, he seeks help from God. As God gently but firmly takes center stage in the story and in Austin's life, winter melts into spring and the once fallow used car lot becomes a budding garden of life and hope.

Often the best creative works turn out to be the least complicated - ones that tap into that eternal purity and richness everyone appreciates when it emerges. Flywheel is such a story. The simple story line is nothing new, but it's in the telling that the sweetness arises. In one scene, Austin is confronted by a news team who exposes his formerly corrupt practices on local TV, threatening to destroy what has turned into an honorable business after Austin's re-birth. Austin realises his inability to combat what the news crew has revealed and offers a meak, "What you are reporting is true, but I'm not like that anymore," which is way overshadowed by the bad report.

Rather than lashing out, Austin seeks a quiet place to turn to God and tell him, "I can't do anything about this. I need your help." As he's praying all the people who he had paid back from his former days of deceit come to his aid and offer up their testimonies to the astonished news crew. God's quick and decisive action turns what appeared to be total defeat into another of His amazing works of redemption.

This is a movie made by mostly volunteers with no professional actors, yet shines through as a timeless story everyone can appreciate. God is not only in the story, He's in the credits as well. This is a no-contest 5-star work.

I really enjoyed this film. I bought it because I had enjoyed Facing the Giants so much, and this is by the same folks. As other reviewers have said, the production quality is not as high as with their other films (I believe this was their first movie), but honestly, I barely even noticed production quality after the first 15-20 minutes. Some of the acting is a smidge clumsy as well (the lead, Alex Kendrick, is excellent however), but again- that did not detract much for me. The story felt fresh (with the exception of the cliche school scene at the end), the main character quickly became someone you could root for, and while it didn't quite cause the amount of waterworks I experienced with Giants, I admit to getting a tad misty-eyed a few times. I also really liked that they did not end the film too quickly (those who have seen it know what I mean)- they let the story play out a bit more and that, for me, was one of the best elements in the film- the part that took it past immediate resolution and into consequences and on forward again. I also really liked that the main character struggled with his responsibilities TO his faith, and also that he understood that faith was not a guarantee of a happy ending, so he needed to be okay with however God chose to proceed. Good messages.

Can't give a full 5 stars due to the production quality and the slightly amateur supporting cast's acting (they did GREAT for not being professional actors, I don't mean to slam their contribution). I wish half stars was an option, because I'd go 4.5 if I could.

I believe this is the first movie that the Kendrick Brothers did and it’s very good. It’s really worth watching. I’m so glad Amazon had it.

The Kendrick Brothers have a plethora of wonderful movies. This is their first one I believe, and the one with the lowest budget. Keep reading. This is the best one they made.
