Comfort & Joy: A Fable Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 15,835 ratings

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Kristin Hannah is beloved by readers around the world for her unique blend of powerful emotion and exquisite storytelling. In Comfort & Joy, she offers a modern-day fairy tale—the story of a woman who gets a miraculous chance at happiness.

Joy Candellaro once loved Christmas more than any other time of the year. Now, as the holiday approaches, she is at a crossroads in her life; recently divorced and alone, she can’t summon the old enthusiasm for celebrating. So without telling anyone, she buys a ticket and boards a plane bound for the beautiful Pacific Northwest. When an unexpected detour takes her deep into the woods of the Olympic rainforest, Joy makes a bold decision to leave her ordinary life behind—to just walk away—and thus begins an adventure unlike any she could have imagined.

In the small town of Rain Valley, six-year-old Bobby O’Shea is facing his first Christmas without a mother. Unable to handle the loss, Bobby has closed himself off from the world, talking only to his invisible best friend. His father Daniel is beside himself, desperate to help his son cope. Yet when the little boy meets Joy, these two unlikely souls form a deep and powerful bond. In helping Bobby and Daniel heal, Joy finds herself again.

But not everything is as it seems in quiet Rain Valley, and in an instant, Joy’s world is ripped apart, and her heart is broken. On a magical Christmas Eve, a night of impossible dreams and unexpected chances, Joy must find the courage to believe in a love—and a family—that can’t possibly exist, and go in search of what she wants . . . and the new life only she can find.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

It's the last day before Christmas vacation, and Joy Faith Candellaro, a Bakersfield, Calif., high school librarian, is still fretting over finding her husband, Thom, in bed with her sister, Stacey. Although divorced nearly three months—and urged by everyone to move on with her life—Joy just isn't joyful. She's trying, though: she buys a Christmas tree and plans to get herself something spectacular to put under it. Too bad that Stacey's waiting in her driveway with a wedding invitation and the news that she's pregnant with Thom's child. Enraged and betrayed, Joy drives off—and ends up at the airport, holding a ticket to Hope, Canada. What will she do when she gets there? Who cares? All she knows is that life has to be better elsewhere. What happens next is Hannah's version of a Christmas ghost story, as Joy encounters a father and son whose own misery gives her a new perspective. Hannah (The Things We Do for Love) fans will enjoy this fare, but from the subtle-as-a-50-pound-fruitcake irony of Joy Faith's name to a plot twist that necessitates hanging disbelief on the mantel alongside the Christmas stockings, it may be a bit too much for the more skeptical to swallow. Beautiful fable

Beautiful fable
Joy has a lot on her plate this holiday season. Her life is in shambles and the very people she loved the most in her life betrayed her. So she boards a small plane to the Pacific Northwest and just wants to disappear. When plane crashes Joy is lucky to walk away and stumbles upon an inn where she stays through Christmas with Daniel, the owner, and his son Bobby. And then Joy wakes up in the ICU...This book is a beautiful fable of love, betrayal and healing. Joy heals her physical and emotional wounds by helping Daniel and Bobby get through their loss of a loved one. I truly enjoyed the metaphors in this book. Joy is the name of the main character finds her peace at Comfort inn and she carries her Hope to be back with Daniel and Bobby. As a bonus, the story is set in the beautiful and eerie Olympic rainforest giving it a ghostly vibe. This is exactly what a thought of the place driving through the Pacific Northwest last month. This is a perfect read for the lovers of feel-good stories and ghost tales. The mystery was a bit predictable, but the story was nevertheless sweet and comforting.

A few days ago I opened my Kindle app intending to continue reading another book. I was puzzled when, for whatever reason, my library showed all the e-books I apparently bought years ago, but had forgotten. Kristin Hannah's Comfort & Joy: A Fable was the very first book on the list.

And I am glad that, however it happened, a glitch in the app or whatnot, I met Joy, Daniel, and Bobby. Their story was beautifully written, and yes, Kristin Hannah has made me realize that magic can happen, if we believe.

‘Here, in this strange clearing, hundreds of miles from home, I feel both lost and somehow found.’

I’ve been on a Christmas story roll these days, because ‘tis the season! I purchased this book a while back when it was on sale and after recently reading my first Kristin Hannah book (The Nightingale) I figured I would give this one a shot. I thought that it was a heartwarming story filled with magic that’s sure to leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. You sort of have to suspend reality for a while as you read this book, some of the things that happen (even before the “magical” twist) aren’t entirely plausible but I just went with it and instead clung to the message of hope, forgiveness and pursuing your dreams.

‘These two need help, and it’s Christmas. I may have lost my own holiday spirit, but I can’t watch a little boy lose his. Besides, this is my first real adventure. What kind of adventurer ignores the needs of others?’

High school librarian, Joy Candellaro, is recently divorced and facing the prospect of spending the holiday season alone. She usually is one to only dream of adventures, not actually embark on them. But not wanting to sit around feeling sorry for herself, she decides to purchase a ticket bound for the town of Hope in the Pacific Northwest. However her adventure takes a frightening detour and she ends up lost in the Olympic rainforest. She decides to use this opportunity to leave her old life behind, even if just temporarily. She happens upon the Comfort Fishing Lodge where she meets young Bobby O’Shea and his father Daniel. Bobby recently lost his mother and is having difficulty dealing with the loss. He and Joy form a wonderful friendship and in helping to heal Bobby and Daniel’s relationship she also begins to heal the things broken in her own life. During their time together Joy begins to picture what a beautiful family the three of them could be together. However there’s a big twist that happens that’ll leave Joy second guessing everything she thought she found with the O’Shea family.

I’ll admit that I did not see that twist coming! It totally caught me off guard and made me really want to finish the book so I could see how everything turned out. Once the twist happened however, looking back it helped make sense of several things that I questioned or thought was odd in the events that took place before it. I won’t spoil it for you, but I did like how this huge twist really helped add the magical feel to the story! The story was told in such rich detail, I could envision all of the things Joy describes on her adventure. It’s such a beautiful backdrop to the story, I think it was the perfect setting for this heartwarming tale. If you’re looking for a feel good book, that reads easy and will leave you with that magical holiday feel then check this book out!

‘You can run away from your life and your past, but there’s no way to distance yourself from your own heart.’

It was a little too far fetched for me but the Christmas magic made it a little more interesting. I don’t know that I would read again but an easy read.

I love Kristin’s books! However, this is one of her best. A lady in need finds salvation through her dreams and tragedy. Magic and fate are the areas that help with this journey. It’s a beautiful and wonderful journey that enables her to reach her destination. Wonderful and heart warming!
