Life of Emile Zola, The (DVD)

The story of one of the world's greatest writers, a man who proved that one voice can overcome injustice and change the course of a nation is immortalized in The Life of Emile Zola. From his days as a struggling writer in Paris to his first success with the publication of Nana and his brilliant J'accuse, which exposes the Dreyfuss affair as a gross miscarriage of justice to cover up government incompetence, Emile Zola grows into an important voice for art, truth and justice.

Still as potently relevant today as it was in 1937, The Life of Emile Zola is a marvelously entertaining slab of Hollywood social issue-mongering. The life of the French writer is broadly sketched in the early going, but the film settles into its groove with the Dreyfus affair: the scandalous railroading of a military captain for treason, which shook France to its foundation in the 1890s. The elderly Zola's gradual involvement in the case, climaxing with his electrifying "J'accuse!" essay and subsequent trial for libel, is the heart and soul of the picture.

Warner Bros.' version of this story, directed by William Dieterle, carries over the passion (and hokum) of the previous year's Story of Louis Pasteur. It also retains that film's leading man, Paul Muni, who turns in an elaborately theatrical performance. The result was a box-office smash and three Oscars, for best picture, script, and supporting actor (Joseph Schildkraut, who plays Dreyfus). While the film occasionally creaks with Hollywood artifice, the clarion call of truth and outrage come through surprisingly strongly--indeed the film looks prescient as a warning about governments closing ranks to cover up mistakes. Mostly sidestepped is the anti-Semitic vitriol of the campaign against Dreyfus (his Jewishness is referenced only in a written report glimpsed for a moment). This is an old-fashioned barnburner that encourages the viewer to fan the flames. --Robert Horton

Another social commentary film. How high ranking officials ( in this case army generals) can look for a scape-goat to further their own importance and how one man with courage (Zola) can make a majority (to quote Jefferson, I think). Some liberties were taken with the historical facts but there is no doubting the performance of Muni -- first rate -- a very under-rated actor, I think

Incredible performances by Paul Muni and Joseph Schildkraut and a superb supporting cast such as Donald Crisp, Louis Calhern, Harry Davenport and Gale Sondergard. The production design by the Warner technicians, down to the architecture, accoutrements and uniforms was amazing as well. What still amazes is that despite the fact the film is nearly 80 years old, "Emile Zola" does not go over the top with histrionic, over the top acting that was still the stock in trade of actors just coming out of the silent era ten years before. The strength and fire of Muni's Zola is matched by the intelligence and confidence of silence, telling glances, treachery and conspiracy spoken of in low and measured tones and, of course, the understated dignity and terrified anguish of Schildkraut's railroaded Dreyfus. A great film that even today could be used in both history classes and acting classes. In the latter it would be a great tutorial in how American actors at one time were more like those produced by the British stage and cinema even today; professionals who knew their work, took it seriously and understood the difference between being a star and being good. All around well acted, well scripted, well mounted film that came by the designation "classic" honestly.

Another great performance by Muni, great direction and production values. If you do not know French history this may not help you much concerning Zola and where he stands. Those associated with the film shared Zola's radical/socialist views (which are never even discussed in the film). France was, during Zola's life, swinging between Monarchy, Empire, Republicanism and socialism (which was vying for control - then and now). Zola always was concerned with what he perceived with injustice - he was often right.

In any case the film disposes of much of his early and mid-life and then concentrates on his taking on the Dreyfus case. If for no other reason Zola deserves to be extoled for his courage in demanding justice for Dreyfus. This film gives the best discussion on film of what happened. Joseph Schidkraut was the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Dreyfus. Highly suggest you get this.

I really liked this movie. I am trying to view all of the Oscar winning movies over time and have been fascinated by the good quality of the movies made over 80 years ago. I am learning a great deal of history. No movies are ever made about World War I anymore or about the last of the 19th or early 20th centuries. This movie was inspirational showing what a really brave person will do to show the truth. It shows how journalism can be an amazing force for truth and justice if used in the right way.

Surprised it won Best Picture. Still a classic film from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Worth seeing once. Seemed overly long.

This is really good movie and what's fascinating to me is that if you look up in the encyclopedia you will see the pictures of these guys involved in this scandal - the casting was unbelievably accurate as far as the way they looked. The other thing that I like is that it's fairly accurate to the true story unlike so-called "based on a true story" movies today which is mostly given over to total "creative license" to change everything so that it has very little resemblance to historical facts.
