Excellent film for its day.

I first saw this movie many years ago and lost it as I moved several times. I re-bought it and glad I did. The movie is based on the true life story of Gladys Aylward, who felt a call from God to be a missionary to China. She was turned down by the head of the China Missionary Society because, as he told her, she wasn't "qualified." She was a poor woman, no degrees, no "higher" education, so he felt that it was a waste of time and resources to send such a one to China. He tried to discourage her by telling her to go back to where she came from and continue doing what she knew to do: being a maid. She was not discouraged and stood firm on her decision to go to China. Before she left his office, he felt sorry for her and recommended her for a job at the house of an explorer who have been to China many years. There she reads all the books he has on China, while putting her money into buying a ticket to China. The day came when she finally achieves her dream and embarks in the most difficult, yet rewarding of her life. Once in China, she becomes assistant to a long standing missionary in a far region of the country, until the day her mentor falls from a ladder and dies. She perseveres through many difficulties and without much support from anyone. She perseveres because she is convinced that this is what God had called her to do. The movie is a testament to faith, unconditional and unwavering. No matter what others thought of her, or told her, or discouraged her, her belief never faltered. Her faith is rewarded when, during the Japanese invasion of China, she saves 100 children by bringing them through a very arduous journey to the safety of the Mission in another part of the country. There, as God would have it, the very same person who rejected her because she wasn't "qualified" received her and the children. God humbled him and "rub his face" on the "mud" of his foolish assumptions. Is an uplifting and encouraging movie and an assertion that when God calls someone to do His bidding, men's opinions of that person are useless.

Although nominated for best direction by Mark Robson, this is a film where the moon, sun and stars were aligned so marvelously that one must wonder how it ever escaped detection by the masses. From script, to locations, to furnishings, to cast, to music and to overall message this film is worth seeing again and again...it's a keeper! This is not the Ingrid Bergman of Casablanca, Gaslight and For Whom The Bell Tolls fame...this is the Bergman of middle years and it is quite an entry into the world of the afterlife of a true Hollywood leading lady. A role which finds her giving life to an Englishwoman, Gladys Aylward, whose life's work would be that of a missionary to China. Being rejected for a serious lack of qualification she is neither daunted nor deterred. In her quiet but singular way she finds the path that will lead her to that which drives her very being...the quest to bring God's word to the people of China. Ingrid Bergman shines as Aylward and Curt Jurgens is superb as the half White, half Chinese soldier whose life is so deeply touched by this marvelous and driven woman. Robert Donat lends his abilities and charm to the role of the Mandarin of Yang Cheng who is also taken with this woman of uncanny vision and ability. There isn't a actor whose time onscreen is without merit or consequence from the lowly cook to the secretary of the bumbling head of the Mission Society to the villagers of the northern provinces and so on, leading all the way to the top of the heap...where you will find Miss Bergman whose sweet kindness captivates a people. This chapter in the Aylward story takes us on that journey and gives us a glimpse of a war torn pied piper of sorts whose mission it is to deliver 100 orphans out of the hands of a Japanese invasion and into the arms of safety over mountains fraught with danger at every turn. Short on food and time she manages this vagabond parade of want and need to prove qualification of the highest order.

I saw this movie when it first came out and now I've dated myself. I guess I had forgotten about it till I happened upon it on t.v. one day and was fascinated all over again. I am very glad to have a good copy of it so I can watch anytime I want. The first few scenes in London capture one's interest at once and are among my favorite scenes of the movie. I had forgotten how attractive Curt Jurgens was and how believable in the role. I've never been a terrific fan of Ingrid Bergman but she is perfect for this role. I forgot that her accent isn't even English. Robert Donat makes an excellent Mandarin and you forget that he doesn't look Chinese at all. It's the voice that sells it. But, China is the star of this movie. I've been to China twice and loved it so it's always a joy to watch this movie again. It is certainly a worthwhile movie in what to me now is a rather barren wasteland of worthless movies. If you like good movies, well acted, well photographed, etc., you'll really enjoy this. A BIG BONUS is the Commentary offered in Special Features. This is excellent and very interesting. There are 3 people doing it, one of which is an expert on Gladys Alyward and the information he offers is a great added bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful true story

What a wonderful inspiring story of the life of Gladys Aylward portrayed by Ingrid Bergman. How God used an ordinary but determined young woman to rescue 100 Chinese orphans and lead them over the mountains to safety. Watch out for Dr Robinson and keep his name in your memory banks as the story unfolds. I warn you though... The romance is the (only) embellishment of a true story. I quickly checked! Truly worth watching
