Defending the Flock: A Security Guide for Church Safety Directors Paperback – December 12, 2017

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 341 ratings

For too many churches, security is only a passing concern. They lock the doors to the vestibule when services are not being performed. Perhaps they even have some sort of alarm system in place to prevent break-ins. The sad truth is that this is not nearly enough. We live in troubled times, and they’re only becoming more dire with each passing day. Today’s churches face threats from a myriad of sources, ranging from natural disasters to active shooters, and everything in between. It is essential that you are prepared to protect those who enter your doors to worship, and that you’re capable of protecting them from a wide range of threats. This book was designed to provide you with the guidance, instruction, training and preparedness materials required to do just that. We help you answer pressing questions, including: • Is your church prepared for emergencies? • What will your congregation do in the face of severe weather? • Where will disabled congregation members evacuate to in the event of a fire? • Are the children within your congregation protected against physical and sexual abuse, as well as neglect? • Is your administrative staff trustworthy? Do you have practices in place to prevent financial theft? • Are you prepared for gun-related violence within your church? We begin with a detailed look at the situation facing today’s churches, including eye-opening national statistics concerning active shooter situations, destruction from fires, financial threats, bomb threats, severe weather, and more. Each threat is addressed separately, and each chapter provides a detailed walkthrough on the topic, followed by a discussion of how to teach the material to Church Safety Team members. Speaking of the Church Safety Team, you’ll also gain valuable insight into how to create a Church Safety Committee, a Church Safety Team, how to interview and vet candidates to ensure you’re building the best possible team, and a great deal more. Ultimately, it comes down to ensuring that your congregation, grounds and church are protected by sheepdogs – individuals dedicated to keeping the wolves of the world at bay. We invite you to learn more. Find out for yourself just what steps must be taken in order to protect the God’s children.

A Great Tool for Making our Churches Safer.

A Great Tool for Making our Churches Safer.
I worked as a Commissioned Security Officer for over six years, I am a pastor of a Christian Counseling Ministry, and I have a Concealed Carry License in Texas , but I carry concealed though we are allowed to carry openly. I carry to church, like I do to every place I legally can. I have been concerned with church security for many years, and am so happy to have learned about Sheepdog Church Security, I have downloaded much of the free material the website provides, and now I have purchased this book as well. "Defending the Flock" is a well thought out instruction guide for preparing our churches to be more secure. The writing is clear and in plain language. I will be using this book in making adjustment for the security of my ministry, as well as working with other churches to help them set up any level of security they choose. Kris P. Moloney, thank you for this book. God bless you and yours.

There is a lot to digest in this book and I have only just begun but it appears to be well formed. So far my only suggestion is that the forms in the back should be full size and it would be nice if there was actually a link to download the full size pdf version of those forms.

Very good read. There is not much information available to the church safety community since it hasn't been addressed much in the past. I doubt most small churches would be able to implement many of the recommendations but it does provide a very good outline to follow. We are in the medium to large range and still struggle to be able manage many of the items since we are all volunteer. A good job by Author Moloney, I would recommend getting a copy and starting to work on areas that are applicable to your church.

Great book! We subscribe to the author's blog and weekly podcasts and all are informative and well researched. In a time such as this, where respect for places of Worship has fallen away and we're seen as easy targets for theft and violence, a resource such as this is crucial. Medical emergency, threats by weather, child safety, how to navigate insurance requirements, etc., are all in this book as well as much more.
