Swim Speed Strokes for Swimmers and Triathletes: Master Freestyle, Butterfly, Breaststroke and Backstroke for Your Fastest Swimming (Swim Speed Series) Paperback – July 7, 2023

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 190 ratings

Swim better and faster in all four strokes with 4-time Olympian and gold medalist Sheila Taormina.

In her bestselling book
Swim Speed Secrets, Taormina revealed the freestyle swimming technique used by the world's fastest swimmers. Now in Swim Speed Strokes, she shows swimmers and triathletes how to swim their best in all four strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. Using crystal-clear photographs and her engaging, straightforward style, Coach Taormina explains the science behind power and speed in the water, explores the elements common to every stroke, and examines the technique of each stroke.

Over the course of 4 Olympic Games and throughout her career as a world champion triathlete, Taormina refined her exceptional technique as a student of the sport, studying the world’s best swimmers using underwater photographs and video analysis. From Johnny Weissmuller to Michael Phelps, the world’s fastest swimmers share two common elements: high stroke rate and a high-elbow underwater pull.
Swim Speed Strokes goes deep into the fastest swimming techniques and breaks down the pull, kick, core movement, and timing of 13 elite swimmers and Olympians including Peter Vanderkaay, Rebecca Soni, Aaron Peirsol, Rowdy Gaines, Ashley Whitney, Vlad Morozov, Ariana Kukors, Andrew Gemmell, Laura Sogar, Nicolas Fink, Elizabeth Beisel, Doug Reynolds, and Melanie Margalis.

From the catch through the curvilinear path and diagonal phase to the power-packed finish phase, Taormina explores the pull patterns to show how any swimmer can improve their own swimming. Whether you want to master every stroke or simply improve on your best one,
Swim Speed Strokes will show you how to become the strongest swimmer you can be.

I've been swimming for about three years with no improvement in swim speed, which was difficult for me to believe. I knew there must be a technique problem. I took a short swim clinic by the author Sheila and followed up by buying and reading this book and her other book on the freestyle stroke Swim Speed Secrets. This book highlights the most important part of the stroke - the pull - and gives you all the specifics needed to improve. Now I have specific things to think about to improve my stroke. Within just a few weeks of practicing these techniques I was swimming faster and enjoying swimming more. I also like how she highlights the similarities between different strokes, which gives me simpler rules to follow when I'm trying to improve.

I did some research on the Author before buying this digital book and my first impression was "the b**** is trying to make as much money as she can selling devices and different books that probably saying the same thing" but after reading the reviews I thought I will try out this $10 book and see for my self.
IT IS AN AMAZING BOOK very informative well constructed and illustrated and I will start to purchase all Shelies products.
My 9 yrs son who is training 7.5 hours/week in elite club needed some guidance to understand the proper techniques of all strokes and sometimes needs to know why such techniques work better, but where he trains with another 20 swimmers of different ability to comprehend the science of the techniques, I needed a source of reliable information to feed him what he needs and can understand, and what better than an Olympic medalist to provide you with it.
Any Olympic athlete who present such a work explaining the details of their relative sport do deserve all our support and the financial gain they get out of it after they spent the good part of their life's with long daily excersise year in and year out.
Now me and my son are planing to go to the pool on weekends (when he usually don't train) just to work on his technique taken from the book and armed with underwater GOpro camera for later on video analysis. We have the photos in the book to compare to and then he has his normal training sessions to further practice, enhance and perfect his technique.

Thank you Sheily and are more confedant now of my son chance to win his first medal soon :).

This book has great pictures of all the strokes at lots of angles. It also covers the science and reasoning behind the stroke which I really appreciated. It also has charts at the end of each chapter that tell you the split times of elite athletes and how many strokes it took them to get that time and how fast they were taking their strokes which I thought was interesting. It doesn't cover turns but it talks about sighting in open water swimming which I knew nothing about and it also talked about the straight arm freestyle which isn't covered in most books. The book is mostly based around swimming with a curvilinear pull pattern so if you don't believe in that then don't buy.

good use of pictures to support dialogue. I'm too old to get 12,500 hours of practice in, so maybe this will help.

I've read most of the books on competitive swimming technique going all the way back to Counsilman's "Science of Swimming" and if I was going to own only one book, this would be it. It is clearly written with beautifully clear photos that make it a pleasure to read over and over. Each time, I get something more out of it, or refresh something I'd forgotten. The best part is it's accuracy. Sheila uses world record holders and world record performances to illustrate the physics, form and turnover rate we should be using. As a competitive swimmer and coach, this is a gold mine of great information!

This has been beneficial in terms of understanding the various strokes. I am going to go back and look at her earlier book and look at companion videos. The pictures are extremely beneficial because it has allowed me the opportunity to see what the hand position looks like through the pull and check body position. Utilizing several athletes allows the chance to compare the strokes and see the similarities and differences. Well done.

I have 2 swimmers and have been in the sport for over 2 decades. I've read dozens and dozens of swim books and this is the best book I've ever seen to explain visually and verbally the process of swimming fast. Clear. Concise. Efficient. If you want to maximize your speed or the speed of someone you know, this is the book.
Sheila rocks!

Indicado a quem ja sabe nadar e precisa aperfeiçoar.
