Survival Guide to Soft Tissue Pathology Tankobon Softcover – January 1, 2019

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

This book is focused on mastering basic skills and concepts to tackle some of the most difficult lesions encountered in diagnostic surgical pathology. This volume is concise, rich in high quality images, and intended to either offer a foundation or a refresher course in soft tissue lesions. In it, we have taken a novel approach, dividing the book into a brief introductory section that points out some basic principles of reviewing mesenchymal lesions, and then we delve into tumors that can be diagnosed on routine hematoxylin and eosin only – in fact, the majority of soft tissue lesions – together with some for which ancillary studies are helpful. We end with a discussion of lesions for which performing ancillary studies can be important. This book encourages taking diagnoses as far as possible by honing our foundational morphology skills. It is a practical addition to the libraries of both trainees and practicing pathologists

Learner, wallet and apparently cat-friendly guide to soft tissue lesions!

Learner, wallet and apparently cat-friendly guide to soft tissue lesions!
Highly recommend this book!! Concise and practical tips to approach these challenging lesions combined with stunning images. As many of us have strayed toward ancillary testing, they bring us back to key morphologic cues that are ever more critical in the modern era of tiny biopsies. Very grateful for the expertise of Drs. Gardner, Ware and Montgomery to help demystify these lesions. An enjoyable read including some wit and historical perspective as well.

This guide is succinct and high yield for trainees or pathologists who are not soft tissue pathology specialists. I am a dermatopathologist and this book is my first stop when I get a soft tissue lesion in my practice and am working through differential diagnosis. I also have gifted this book to my residents who are continuing in a dermatopathology fellowship, as it adds a lot to their knowledge base and is very accessible. Great reviews all around!

I've started 3 or 4 soft tissue texts and honestly, I couldn't get into any of them before this... They were either too long, outdated, or didn't have enough information. This Survival Guide is well organized into three chapters-- an intro section with an outline of the text and some basic information, then- lesions for which you don't need ancillary testing, and then finally lesions for which ancillary testing is required... The middle chapter comprises the bulk of the text and is divided into adipose lesions, fibroblastic/myofibroblastic, fibrohistiocytic... etc... Pitfalls and differentials are included in descriptions of the various entities, as well as multiple low power and high power photos.

Pros: Quick read. Pictures summarize each vignette. Resident/Fellow discount!

Cons: Can't find pictures of the book online but just ask the publisher and they'll send within a day. One picture (2-104) is repeated... Out of ~500... Mistakes happen and you won't miss it because the low power view is simply repeated twice... Again, not a big deal... In order to make this more atlas style, the pictures don't always match the pages... I generally hate this but in this case, the pictures are more of a refresher because they essentially repeat the major points for each entity.

Overall, a great resource that I look forward to referencing throughout the rest of my residency... fellowship... beyond.

Excellent quick and enjoyable read that can serve both for a trainee, as a perfect complement for a Bone & Soft Tissue Pathology rotation, and for an experienced staff, as a quick refresher of this notoriously complex field of pathology. I used it during my first BST rotation and it helped enormously to categorize the immense body of knowledge you need to learn during the rotation, and I am planning to re-read it again to prepare me for my senior BST rotation. Excellent pictures and excellent, useful, HIGH-YIELD read.
