Excellent educational material directed at people who want to know more about how dogs can learn. Great resource that needs to be slowly digested and studied. Excellent for people who want to know more about why trainers train the way they do.

i had to buy this book for my job to do my K9 Ed program

Five stars on content. Import behavioral information from the Vice President of the ASPCA Animal Behavior Center, Although this book does not tell you how to train a dog, it should be the first book anyone training a dog should read. It explains how dogs think, learn and respond. Regardless of the training method you chose, this book will give you better insight into why the dog responds the way it does and how to make it respond better. After reading the book, I have a much better understanding of how to use "positive" training to get the behaviors I want from my dog. The book has a very pragmatic explanation of how punishment can best be used if necessary. There is a good amount of detail on how an animal's experiences affect its everyday behavior.

Only negative: Although the title claims "plain English", I needed a notecard to keep track of all the track of all the three letter acronyms and their definitions. Still the book is very readable and worth putting up with the notecard.

I also purchased, K9 Behavior Basics: A Manual for Proven Success in Operational Service Dog Training (K9 Professional Training) by Resi Gerritsen and Ruud Haak. I found Excel-Erated Learning to be much clearer and relevant to training at a third the cost.

I finally got around to reading this book recently as part of my studying for the CPDT test. The negative reviews had put me off, but I wish they hadn't. I understand dog training, how I want to communicate with my dog and clients dogs, but attaching the technical jargon to it has been something that I've struggled with. Well this book changed it for me! I was finally able to work through the meanings and get them to stick in my head for more than 5 seconds. Not only did it help solidify my theory foundation, but deepened my generalized understanding. Years ago I was ignorant to dog training and the Humane Hierachy. Today I understand it and GET it. Now I'm just frustrated by all the other individuals who voluntarily chose to remain ignorant, yet still call themselves dog trainers. :(

Other recommended books are Coaching People to Train Dogs by Terry Ryan.

Additional: Some of the training methods discussed in this book are controversial and unpopular. Regardless of your personal beliefs, if you take this book, read it (putting aside your opinions on how to train or how not to train) it is a very good text book.

If you really want to get into something meaty that'll push buttons try Coercion and its fallout by Murray Sidman.

This is a very good book, pretty well-written with clear explanations and examples of some fairly complex concepts. It was written in 1996, however, and dog training has moved away from aversives since then. Understanding the effect of aversuves is important, but I don't think it's appropriate to include aversive training instructions in a text that is recommended reading for the CPDT-KA exam, an exam from an organization that promotes LIMA.
A major problem with the copy I received, however, was the printing. The type was gray and pixelated, which made it hard to read. The font is fairly small, which didn't help. Good printing matters!

Such good information presented in a way that I understand! I definitely recommend this book to people hoping to be training professionals but also to all people that want to understand the best way to teach or 4 legged (or 3 legged friends). What can be better than improving our communication with our dogs?🐕‍🦺

As an amateur dog trainer/adv. pet owner, man this book really explained mistakes I've done in the past with my dog. For example the book points out that guiding a dog into a position using hands or physical touch is more salient to the dog than if the dog learned how to do it himself. Yeah, that's why my dog was being "stubborn" with an exercise I thought I was being more helpful in physically assisting him in.

Another part, author literally explains why ecollar training for a recall is so effective. The dog learns how to turn the stim off(with confidence?) while doing a flight behavior or something like that and thus recommends ecollar training with only certain behaviors. And even when the collar is off, the dog responds like the collar is on.

It goes into some problem stuff like separation anxiety in the end, but it's not super detailed.

I have re purchased this book as I stupidly loaned my original one and surprise surprise never got it back! But it's worth buying again as I find this to be the most definitive guide to understanding and implementing dog behaviour and training. It is clearly written, easy to adapt to your style of training and well set out. I have been training dogs for over 20 years but just recently started studying to become a KCAI and this book is invaluable with this course.

A manual meant for dog trainers and amateurs.
It just goes through the usual stuff (classical, operant conditioning...) from a very interesting, practical point of view.
