Followed by achievable recipes and guides to taking, this layman's guide to Adaptogens will benefit anyone who wants to bring back their zing without just buying a cupboard full of expensive (and mainly useless) supplements and playing trial and error. Highly Recommended.
Presentation is where it falls down though, and in my opinion the book needs re-working. The 14 x 18cm format is very compact, and the text within is tiny. It gives the impression of a book that was typeset for a larger format and subsequently miniaturised to save production costs. The result is tiny thin text, sometimes even appearing over a dark grey background. Whose bright idea was that? It's a struggle even with good eyesight, but if you're visually impaired I advise you skip the print version and buy it in Kindle.
The term 'adaptogen' refers to a group of super-herbs, if you like, researched and identified in the Soviet Union just after the second world war. These are herbs that produce a resistance to physical, emotional and environmental stress, and help too in restoring normal physiological function after it has been compromised by stress. Great use has been made of them by the Russian armed services, sports teams and in the cosmonaut program. Some of the herbs you may have heard of, some not - sage, ginseng, shatavara, hawthorn, damiana, eleuthera, to name but a few.
This is a practical book, designed to help you actually utilise the knowledge for yourself. General information and advice on dosage, safety and stress reduction is followed by specific information on each herb - twenty in all. We are told what it is, what it's for and how to take it, along with added notes and interesting information. The last part of the book suggests a few recipes to help integrate the herbs into our diet. I should also mention the very useful international sourcing guide!
Despite the minuscule font I still like and recommend the book, but I feel compelled to remove one star for the unnecessary eye strain. Note to the publishers - I strongly suggest the book is enlarged for the next print run!
