Joel Smith is the founder of Just Fly Sports Performance, and host of the Just Fly Performance Podcast, an online resource for coaches and athletes. Joel is a former strength coach at the University of California, Berkeley, and additionally, has 17 years of experience coaching track and field on the NCAA, club and private level.

A lifelong student of human performance, Joel has achieved NAIA All-American status as a track and field competitor and has been blessed with the opportunity to facilitate the training process of a great number of athletes, personally and remotely. His results have included NCAA D1 and D3 track and field champions, American, and Master's World records. As a strength coach, Joel has been blessed to play a role in the preparation of World and Olympic Champions and NCAA championship teams. Ultimately, results are important, but to Joel, the journey is what matters the most. In addition to typical coaching duties, Joel spends time volunteer coaching local youth soccer.

In the academic space, Joel has spent time doing published research in biomechanics, lecturing college courses in athletic development, and has written for numerous blogs and training outlets. He has found mentorship from industry leaders in strength and speed training, biomechanics, and motor learning, and has enjoyed the process of integrating the knowledge into his own practical system of movement and performance training.

Great blend of biomechanics, physiology, and application

Great blend of biomechanics, physiology, and application
📖Speed Strength by Joel Smith 📖It didn't take long to know this book would become one of often reference.I decided to invest in it after many episodes of the #justflyperformancepodcast that Joel Smith puts together. It covers any and everything related to athletic performance. Im very thankful it exists 🙏I enjoyed the podcast so much I decided to invest in this 📕Joel Smith wrote about linear speed. I'm a basketball/training fanatic who could use a little bump in application of linear speed concepts and the book did not disappoint.I enjoy a spectrum of training books, from dense physiology/biomechanics to the overly simplified. My favorite though, are the beautiful blend of both. If I read a book and there isn't one mention of metabolic considerations, or a muscle fiber type, or even just a basic signaling pathway - I find it very hard to grasp the concepts. This book - is that beautiful blend of both 👏🏻There is something novel in this book for everyone. From beginners to seasoned S&C coaches. Worth the investmentThank you @justflysports

I read speed strength and it was one the best books I have ever read. I was then determined to get to know Ioel personally. It just so happened he moved to where I lived by so I aksed him to come train with him. He was kind enough to give me a chance to train with him. In just a short amount of time not only has he helped me overcome physical barriers he has really got me back to the heart of what it means to be a human. I am really fortunate to have him in my life and if anybody has the chance to come see him in person I will not a doubt in my heart know he can help in some way.

Speed Strength is an absolute beauty! The setup of the book easily spreads out each aspect of sprint mechanics and training. The graphs, pictures, and sentence structure really allowed me to absorb so much information. I can’t wait to implement some of these methods with my athletes. Easily one of the best training books I have ever read. I learned so much valuable training information. Can’t believe this much information is available at this price. Looking forward to listening to the podcast more and reading more of Joel’s content!

I have read a number of speed training/sprint mechanics books and Joel's work is second to none. His concepts and explanations break the mold of commonly held beliefs and give fresh insight into the art of getting faster. Many of the methods laid out in this book have paid immediate dividends both for my performance and the performance of my athletes. This is a must read for any track/strength and conditioning coach.

Very holistic approach to speed training. Awesome content about how humans naturally know how to run fast but sometimes get coached out of it. Great info on mechanics, different ways to train different athletes, how and when to use the weight room to help progress speed and when to not use it. Overall an awesome book, and one that I'll keep going back to and learn from.

The book covers sprinting mechanics very well. It also has photos and video links showing plyometric and strength training. New research shows heavy sleds can help you sprint faster.

I have read over a hundred books on strength and conditioning for athletes and this is among the best. This type of book was badly needed for GAA.Its very easy to follow and full of brilliant ideas suitable for people new to this area and also for people like me who have experience .I especially like the simple and clear instructions on how to perform each exercise and the suggested programmes.I wish this type of book was available to me when I got into this profession several years ago as it would have stopped me making numerous mistakes.

This book was a game-changer for me! The book is absolutely worth buying it.
The book is an easy read because he breaks down the literature, evidence-based information and his overwhelming knowledge from his podcasts in a way everyone can understand it.

The author provides clear information all way from beginning to end. He describes every aspect of sprinting in detail which helped me a lot to understand this complex human movement better. Further, he provides pictures and videos for training purposes and explains also why he prefers these to sum everything up on how to plan sprint training.
