An experiential guide for exploring the convergence of psychological healing and spiritual awakening that happens most clearly and powerfully in the depths of the heart

“The Deep Heart is what I call a living book, that rare gem of a book that is alive with the presence of its author . . . A book like this should be felt and experienced as much as it should be read.” ―Adyashanti

The great human quest is to discover who we really are―a discovery that changes our lives and the lives of those around us. With
The Deep Heart, spiritual teacher and psychotherapist Dr. John J. Prendergast invites us on a pilgrimage within, using the heart as a portal to our deepest psychological and spiritual nature.

The “deep heart” is Prendergast’s term for our heart center―a subtle center of emotional and energetic sensitivity, relational intimacy, profound inner knowing, and unconditional love. “The heart area is where we feel most deeply touched by kindness, gratitude, and appreciation, yet it is also where we feel most emotionally wounded,” writes Prendergast. “Whether we realize it or not, the heart is what we most carefully guard and most want to open.”

Throughout
The Deep Heart, Prendergast expertly combines the boundaried wisdom of psychotherapy with a spacious, embodied path to liberation, bringing attention to both the joys and pitfalls of each approach with the compassion of a friend who’s walked the path for decades.

In this experiential guide, Prendergast invites you to tune into your inherent wisdom, love, and wholeness as you journey into the deep heart. Through precise and potent meditative inquiries, insightful stories, and reflections drawn from Prendergast’s intimate work with students and clients, you’ll begin to open your heart, see through your core limiting beliefs, and discover the true nature of your being.

The Deep Heart is a beautifully written and masterful guidebook that eloquently shows us how to recognize and embody our essential wholeness in everyday life. Both profound and practical, this seminal work reveals the road we all must travel to embody our potential as fully alive and authentic human beings. A must-read!” ―Richard Miller, PhD, author of The iRest Program for Healing PTSD: A Proven-Effective Approach to Using Yoga Nidra Meditation and Deep Relaxation Techniques to Overcome Trauma; iRest Meditation: Restorative Practices for Health, Resiliency, and Well-Being; and Yoga Nidra: A Meditative Practice for Deep Relaxation and Healing

The Deep Heart is a beautiful, wise, and practical guide to opening to our true nature, guiding us toward waking up, as well as down and in. Integrating and distilling wisdom teachings and his own insights and inner explorations, John Prendergast has translated complex information into a clear, accessible, and contemporary form. The meditations and inquiries are wonderful invitations to explore the depths of the heart for ourselves. I highly recommend The Deep Heart for anyone who wishes to embody their true nature as loving awareness.” ―Laurel Parnell, PhD, author of Rewiring the Addicted Brain with EMDR-Based Treatment and Attachment-Focused EMDR: Healing Relational Trauma

“If, as you read this exquisite book, you feel into the depths from which the author writes, you will find yourself drawn into your own depths from which healing and wisdom arise.” ―
Roger Walsh, MD, PhD, professor of psychiatry, philosophy, and anthropology, University of California at Irvine, author of Essential Spirituality: The Seven Central Practices to Awaken Heart and Mind

“This is a wise, inspiring, beautifully written book. It points to our true nature, and to the love, compassion and acceptance that naturally arise in us when we experience who we really are. Judith Blackstone, PhD, author of Belonging Here, Trauma and the Unbound Body, and The Enlightenment Process

“A book of great wisdom and heart from an authentic and experienced teacher of Presence. John’s wise, loving, and deeply insightful words about meeting our raw experience with honesty, courage, and grace will be of immense benefit to people all over the world.” ―
Jeff Foster, author of The Way of Rest and The Joy of True Meditation

The Deep Heart carries the taste and flavor of an author who has himself spent a lifetime immersed in the Deep Heart where soul and spirit meet. This book is a truly elegant and practical road map that seamlessly weaves soul work into the timeless wisdom of spiritual practice.” ―Roger Housden, author of the Ten Poems series, and Dropping the Struggle: Seven Ways to Love the Life You Have

The Deep Heart is one of those books that is more like a Friend or Guide that Sufi tradition speaks of. While it is filled with deep clarity and insight, its primary effect is not the conveying of information, but the revelation of an inner landscape. This landscape is unique for each of us, not one that we create, but that we attune to by way of our own sensitivity. It is the Heart itself that is the organ of this sensitivity, which John helps to awaken with his wise and skillful invitation.
“Paragraph by paragraph, with empathy and kindness, John shares the fruits of his decades-long exploration of the Heart and its mysteries. By shining a light into the hidden and darkened places, he offers us a guided tour of the Self in a way that is contemporary, accessible, and practical.
“What is unique about John’s writing is his ability to convey the deepest realizations of the contemplative traditions while remaining sensitive to the physical, energetic, and relational dimensions of our human experience. Teachings on ‘Presence’ are often taught from a narrow, limited viewpoint and ‘from the neck up.’ But John reminds us that our bodies are alive with the divine spark, that deep within the caverns of the Heart there is something miraculous occurring.
The Deep Heart is a warm, merciful invitation for each of us to tend to this miracle and fully participate in it―in all of life’s glory and chaos―for the benefit of others as well as ourselves.” ―Matt Licata, PhD, psychotherapist, teacher, and author of The Path Is Everywhere: Uncovering the Jewels Hidden Within You and A Healing Space: Befriending Ourselves in Difficult Times

“The spiritual journey does not end with awakening to the Infinite, but begins a life lived more and more consciously from the loving and immanent Presence that has awakened itself within. Writing with exquisite clarity and compassion, John Prendergast explores these two dimensions of the awakening process in his newest book,
The Deep Heart. His intimate knowledge of the human psyche through his many years functioning as a gifted psychotherapist and educator deeply informs his work and writing as a spiritual teacher.
“John writes from authentic experience of both the challenges of being a conditioned human being and the freedom of simply
Being. Through numerous guided meditations and exercises, he invites the reader to deeply inquire into the truth of experience, and to allow the wounded heart to be touched and transformed by the Deep Heart that is undivided and whole. John approaches with great sensitivity the human experience through the single Eye that sees the inseparability of the Heart of Awareness and its expressions as life itself.” ―Dorothy Hunt, spiritual director of Moon Mountain Sangha and author of Ending the Search: From Spiritual Ambition to the Heart of Awareness

“Psychotherapist and spiritual teacher John Prendergast has devoted his life to exploring the intersection and intermingling―indeed, the inherent inseparability―of the psychological and spiritual dimensions of being. In this profound, practical, and potentially life-changing meditation on the Heart in all its subtlety and complexity, he guides us on the journey home to our essential nature, with meditations and inquiry that lead us into and through our trauma and pain to our deepest inner knowing. If you read only one book on the spiritual journey this year, let it be this one!” ―
Stephan Bodian, psychotherapist, spiritual teacher, and author of Wake Up Now and Beyond Mindfulness

The Deep Heart is so much more than a book, it provokes a feeling of tuning into our most open and loving awareness through John Prendergast's warm and authentic guidance. With beautiful meditations and relatable insight throughout the book, it drastically opened my ability to get a real sense and experience of the nature of my true nature. It is one you will read more than once and I highly recommend owning both a copy of the book and the audio version. John's authenticity and compassion comes through in the audio version beautifully.

I first met John at the initial SAND conference in 2009…it was a scattered event split between two venues, with lots of people milling around, and had perhaps more science-oriented sessions than current conferences. The relationship between spiritual awakening and psychology has been an important area of study for me for 60 years. Both John and I learned TM early – I entered the business world, and John pursued psychoanalysis.

“The Deep Heart” takes off where Chapter 7 of “In Touch” ends, at openheartedness. But a wide variety of topics are included in this latest book including developmental trauma, gazing, hara-level awakening, doership and some differences with both Zen and traditional Advaita Vedanta, felt sensing, Core beliefs, regions of the Heart, listening and several exercises asking “what is my deepest knowing?” – not to be answered with the mind. He also touches the “third rail” of nonduality – the soul…(How can there be a soul if the ‘separate-inside-self’ is a fiction??)

We also learn more about John here, in his immensely modest way, about his early conditioning and breakthroughs, and a number of shared experiences at retreats.

John is a careful writer – his prose is distilled and poignantly clear. Be sure to have a bookmark when you read this elegant, deeply resonant book – you will be putting it down to dwell on ideas, concepts, thoughts and your own responses often. I could only read about 15 pages at a time. Highly recommended. Thanks, John!!

We are taken on a journey to the felt experience of our deepest Heart and the Love therein, no matter our prior conditioning or trauma. Nothing is left out, in fact, John Prendergast shows us how our conditioning and trauma can be the doorway to this Love. Through experiential inquiry we are deftly shown "how" to do this. It is an embodied spirituality, one of felt and cellular Knowing. This is also the only book I know of that articulates the various aspects of ourselves (ego, soul, relationships and the awakened Self or no-self), and does so with depth and clarity. Clarifying these seemingly disparate aspects helped me because I had some confusion and blind spots about these levels! This book is a rare gem, I cannot recommend it more highly.

What a beautiful, profound, and heartfelt book John has written! What I love and appreciate about his work is that in addition to exploring the spiritual aspects of the hearts opening, it is clear he has a deep understanding of the psychological and emotional issues that arise as one makes this journey. John writes about these with great insight and compassion inviting us to be with whatever arises with love and patience. It is a gem of a book that I highly recommend.

John's work means the world to me. It is so, so rare to come into contact with a spiritual teacher who is as intimate with non-duality as with what it means to be fully human. As both a non-dual teacher and a psychotherapist, he is a true pioneer in bringing meditation and a spiritual understanding into our very human lives.

As a student of his for a number of years, what continues to surprise me is the degree to which our own suffering, our insecurities, contractions, and judgments, can be direct portals to a greater truth of our being. I used to have an idea of spirituality that in order to understand my essential nature, I needed to see what I am "not." Not my feelings, not my sensations, perceptions, thoughts, etc. And this is still true to some degree. But John chooses to work not around these human feelings, but WITH them, intimately, and into the very center of them, toward what they are hiding beneath the surface. In this way, our own stories of worthlessness, flaw, and lack are our very keys to freedom.

Through "The Deep Heart," John explains his process of working with people as intimately as I have known him to do in person. In fact, as Adyashanti writes in the foreword, if you're really paying attention, you can sense John's "quiet presence" as you read it. He does this through an exploration of the heart in all of its dimensions and layers, from the emotional heart, to the soul and archetypal realms, and finally into the infinite heart, or Great Heart, that holds everything and everyone in loving awareness. He also presents unique methods of inquiry to help us directly access our deeper knowing, among which is his method of "heartfelt meditative inquiry" into our core-limiting beliefs, which has been one of the greatest resources in my life.

John's work and presence have been an extraordinary gift to me, and I am so happy that others will have access to it as well. For those of us ready to inquire into our lives as they are, here and now, this is a book not to be missed.

The Deep Heart is a profoundly experiential book. As I read John's words of wisdom I feel myself transported from my own ego fixations into the rich expanse of my own human and divine heart. Ralph Waldo Emerson was my favorite writer in college and this book reminds me of a quote of his: "cut these words and they would bleed, they are vascular and alive." John is a true spiritual teacher, wise and infinitely compassionate. Get the book, you will not be disappointed! Also, get his book "In Touch," it is just as exquisite.

What I loved about this book were the exercises that went along with the topics discussed. This is a really active book, not just theory and thinking about concepts - the point is to do the work to move into presence and feeling what that means for you. It's a book of personal and universal discovery and I loved the combination of psychotherapy and spirituality.

5.0 out of 5 stars The great heart holds the human heart
Reviewed in Germany on December 29, 2019
In his heartfelt new book "The deep heart" John prendergast takes us on a journey into the depth of the heart. On this journey into the deep, he covers the layers of ego, soul and Self. We are taken onto an expedition from seeing ourselves as merely the tip of a wave (ego) through the depth of the wave (soul) to the vast ocean of the Self, in which all the waves exist and through which they are held and conneccted.

We are taken by the hand and gently guided to discover how the space of meditation holds all experience unconditionally (chapter three), how meditative inquiry works to solve deep questions from the level of heart (Chapter 4) and how the dense physical body can be discovered to be made from space and vibration (Chapter 5). Then we are encouraged to dive deep into contractions, emotional pain and holding patterns (chapter 6) and discover which beliefs hold them in place and how to meet them (Chapter 7). The rest of the book seeks to discover the great heart, which is discovered through not knowing (Chapter 8), which holds the broken human heart (Chapter 9) and shines in the world as joy and love (chapter 10). After a short Chapter on the Hara (Chapter 11), the book concludes with how living from the deep heart translates into relationship (Chapter 12,13).

Personally I was especially touched by the quiet sense of presence that was transmitted through this book and how the book evoked the feeling of how the great heart really holds and broken, hurt or closed human heart with all its scars and hurts. I am also really looking forward to Johns next book on the hara.

I was first introduced to the clear, insightful, eloquent writing of John Prendergast reading “in touch: How to Tune In to the Inner Guidance of Your Body and Trust Yourself.” When first reading the title, I thought, ah ha! this could be just what I need! And it was.
Then, along came “The Deep Heart: Our Portal to Presence.” I couldn’t wait to get into it. I found, though Deep Heart builds on its predecessor, it is a powerful - and for me - life-changing book, that stands equally well on its own. Life-changing for me because, while coming to understand the futility of the “self-improvement project” - through John’s kind words and guided meditations - I find myself improved! By that I mean, more patient, accepting of myself and others, peaceful and loving. His work - truly - has been just what I needed. And I will forever be grateful.

This guide is profoundly experiential, just in its reading but there are simply meditations throughout the book that guide the reader to drop into the experience of what is being shared. The author's experience, learning and desire to share and serve is palpable. It is a multi-dimension offering about the heart which is incomplete without the understand of its context in the physical, energetic & spiritual body. Simply practical, deeply impactful.
