Wow. What an insightful book!!
I’ve been researching and learning and trying to play catch up on my new puppy. I at one time considered myself a good trainer. This book is an essential piece of the puppy raising puzzle. Hat tip ti Hannah Brannigan and the podcast Drinking From The Toilet for this book!!!

Most dog training books out there (especially involving puppies) are step-by-step instructions on how to teach your dog what is considered "obedience" -- Sit, stay, recalls, housebreaking. These *are* important, but they're only part of the hierarchy of needs a dog requires to be a well-adjusted, happy being.

Laura knocks it out of the park again with her new book, Social, Civil, and Savvy, teaching how to work on the "well-adjusted" part.

This book isn't just for puppies. It's required reading for anyone who has a dog, whether the dog is ten months or ten years old. Being well-informed and knowing how to introduce your dog to new stimuli is vastly important, and this book shows you how to do it at your dog's speed.

I worried that I wouldn't find this book useful, as I've been working with my singleton Australian Kelpie, Blazer, for almost six years now. It's hard to find anything fresh or new when you've read just about every book on canine behavior out there. This book not only pointed out the things I did right (I worked with Blazer's feet since the moment he came home) to the things I did flat out wrong (dog park at eleven weeks!) to things I can work on now and forever ("touch the goblin"). She writes and recommends without judgment, with her trademark flair of dry humor and love of science fiction.

The thing I've enjoyed most about Laura VanArendonk Baugh's books is that she always has a way of showing what a dog is experiencing through human analogies. It's sometimes hard for us to understand how a dog may interpret situations. I don't want to give too much away, but I particularly enjoyed her comparison of dog parks to clubbing (you'll have to read it!).

I found the book a great page turner from the second I opened it to the moment I closed it.

Thanks for another great one!

This is a great book for puppy owners! It focuses specifically on socialization and exposure, which are crucial aspects of puppy development and growth. Too many puppy owners and even trainers focus solely on teaching obedience and forget the importance of raising confident and social puppies. The information in this book is basic and easy to understand. It includes great analogies and explanations for easy reading. The author is not a balanced trainer, so there is a slight political agenda, so take that with a grain of salt and read on! - Amy Pishner, Owner/Head Trainer Valor K9 Academy

This hands down the absolutely best book on raising a puppy I have ever read and I am very well read on dog training and behavior. It is written in an easy to follow manner and keeps you interested from the first page to the last. It is great for the newbie puppy owner or the well seasoned owner. It's a must read for every puppy owner and should go home with every new pup whether they come from a reputable breeder or a shelter.

The short version: If you have a puppy (or intend to have a puppy), buy this book and read it AT LEAST twice.

At this point, pretty much everyone knows that puppies need to be socialized. But in practical terms, what does that mean and what does ideal puppy socialization even look like?

Spoiler: It's much more complex than just "go places, meet a lot of people and hope for the best." This book is your roadmap for doing it right.

Laura is a skilled positive reinforcement trainer who writes with a witty, approachable tone. I particularly love the clever analogies she uses to make the science accessible -- the science is there if you want it, but not overwhelming if you just want to know what to do to avoid raising a canine sociopath. It's hard to find a dog training book that is fulfilling for a professional audience and also accessible for a brand new first-time dog owner, but this one is equally excellent for either.

I train professionally and recommend this book to all of my students with young puppies. I have reread it with each new puppy who has joined the household since it came out (two so far) and intend to continue that tradition with all future puppies (because even professionals need reassurance that we're not going to break the baby).

As far as I'm concerned, Social, Civil and Savvy is the best socialization book on the market. For adult dogs who are struggling with strong feelings around people or dogs, Laura's other book Fired Up, Frantic and Freaked Out may be a better fit.

This is the best book I have ever seen when it comes to socializing your puppy. The writing is very upbeat and personal; it is fun to read. This is not a "how to raise and train" kind of book. Its entire focus in on puppy socialization: how, where, why, when. If you are starting with an older dog, most of the content can be tailored to fit. I've had dogs pretty much all my life and I still learned a lot from this book.

This is a well thought out excellent book. I got it as a refresher for ideas on socialization. This book covers it all and explains how dogs learn very clearly. I recommend this book to anyone getting or thinking about getting a new puppy. My only complaint is it came with several of the pages torn completely out.

This book is extremely cheap, and you cannot afford to NOT get it if you have a puppy on the way (or already have one. or are thinking about one. or are thinking about thinking about one. whatever).
She's one of my favorite dog writers because she writes in very accessible language while still packing the book full of references to scientific papers backing up everything she says. It's all force free by the way. And it's full of practical advice, so even if you know, in theory, what you should do, this should help you put it into more concrete actions.

As I have raised many puppies and try to keep up with the most progressive dog training methods so I can't say that it was revolutionary concepts in the book but the clear explanations and guidelines without extra science talk and lingo )I love it but most dog owners aren't behaviour nerds like me) and Lauras great writing makes the book worth every penny and then some. A perfect addition to puppy packs given by the breeders or just for any puppy owner, especially a first time one. If you're getting a puppy you should also get this book.

"Social, Civil, and Savvy" by Laura VanArendonk Baugh was recently recommended to me as a primer for new puppies. First-time dog owners and longtime enthusiasts alike can learn from this book - it's not so much a training book as it is a ground-floor training philosophy. This book gives the new owner a framework for continuing the training and development of their puppy that the breeder has started with enriching puppy raising programs. If the puppy wasn't raised in such environment, the book is even more important to help them reach their potential.
